Mormonism as a Christian Denomination

Mormonism as a Christian Denomination

The textbook includes Mormonism as a Christian denomination. Traditionally many have viewed Mormonism as a NRM or cult. (The book does not include in its definition of cult as being centered around a charismatic leader, such as Joseph Smith.)
One online Christianity Today article discusses this distinction in the light of Mitt Romney’s presidential run.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) recently removed an article from its website that listed Mormonism as a “cult.” The change followed Mitt Romney’s home visit to Billy Graham last week, where the evangelist pledged “help” to the Mormon presidential candidate’s campaign. The BGEA later
explained, “We removed the information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign.”
After reading this article, find one other source and discuss whether you think Mormonism is a denomination, sect, or NRM. You may use scriptures as a second source
