Aging in Place Occupational Therapy.

Students will gather and synthesize 12 scholarly articles that relate to their specialty track or other emerging OTD final project idea. Students are required to create a literature review paper that will inform their final doctoral project and manuscript about their project, consisting of approximately 10 pages summarizing the relevant literature in thematic groupings with appropriate headings using APA (7th ed.) format.  Literature selected should include a variety of research methods (e.g., both quantitative and qualitative).

Literature Review Rubric (60 points)

  • Introduction: Clear overview of the paper, demonstrates importance and need of topic (10 points)
  • Body: (20 points)
    1. Balanced viewpoint: Objective, balanced view from various perspectives.
    2. Coherent theme: Each cited study related to the topic and to the other studies
    3. Depth and breadth of research: Variety of studies and attention to detail about the topic
    4. Analysis: Collection of studies analyzed for differences and commonalities related to the topic
  • Conclusion: Information synthesized and brought to a logical conclusion (10 points)
  • Organization & Alignment: Information is logically organized with good flow. APA Headers and sub-headers are used correctly. (5 points)
  • Mechanics: Correct spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and word usage. Correct use of APA (7th) in the body of paper with in-text citations. References correctly formatted. (10 points)
  • Cited Literature: Current (within last 10 years, credible resources, evidence-based research) references, appropriate number, and quality/rigor. (5 points)

  • Reducing falls in the home and decreasing the need for the severe burden on caregivers’ current or future
  • Advocating for Primary prevention for older adults aging in place

Possible research questions and sub-questions

  • How prepared do older adults feel to age in place successfully with occupational therapy intervention in comparison to those who have never had occupational therapy services?
    • How confident are older adults living at home that they can complete ADLs, navigate floors, transfer to low surfaces(couches, dining room chairs), toilet, shower, backyard, a front porch?
    • At what independence level are older adults currently completing ADL, transfers, and community mobility with or without receiving occupational therapy intervention?
