The key principles of assessment and feedback as applied to health professions’ education (1500 words)

Choose three assessment methods, one of each used to assess:
(a) knowledge and understanding (500)
(b) practical, clinical and procedural skills (500)
(c) professional behaviours (500)

For each method selected, explain their appropriateness to the setting, how they promote learning and their strengths and weaknesses (limitations)

Purpose of assessment:

– To assure patients and the public that health professionals are safe and competent to practise
– To assess learners against defined standards, learning outcomes and competencies
– To make a diagnosis of progress
– To provide feedback to learners and to faculty
