Facebook for Social Change

Facebook is considered the birth of social networking as it is the leading social networking site in terms of subscribers across the globe. With over 1 billion users worldwide, Facebook is the top social media gateway for organizations all over the world, enabling them to keep in contact with their clients, staff customers, and fans. Companies and individuals alike use Facebook to keep their “friends” updated on the latest events (Hart 12). Universities, Colleges and other learning institutions use it to provide a platform on which their alumni can interact. The authors have created groups for their readers to post comments about the latest published works or to ask questions about the upcoming books. This paper tries to explain the business opportunities that can be found in social media and its implications for social change.

The introduction of Facebook has also introduced business opportunities. Every smartphone now has an app to give the user instant access to the site, allowing for quick checks on new posts and for quick posts to be posted by the user (Baran 21). With a large number of people, using Facebook to keep updated and informed, it is a shame that the majority of businesses are not using this outlet to keep in contact with their customers, and in some cases even suppliers. Many businesses or companies do not use Facebook out of fear of privacy and security implications, despite its ability to be used as a tool to enhance the customer contact experience (Hart 23). There can be some risks when using Facebook if the tool is used improperly. Despite the risks involved in businesses, or companies using Facebook and their hesitation to interact with customers, the platform offers various advantages, including the ability to gain instant feedback from the clients, providing prompt customer advice and updating customers on the latest offers, price change, new products, and giving feedback to clients’ questions.

The implication of a world phone book for social change is that there are positive and negative outcome of the social media platform for social change. Since Facebook contains people’s details, such as age, name, contacts, and place of birth as well as where an individual stays. It is very hard to engage in crime because it will be very easy to track and arrest criminals. This has contributed to lowering crime rates in most countries across the world. Facebook as a social networking site has brought this positive social change. Consequently, all Facebook users need to take precaution when using Facebook as it has been proven that no one is truly protected (Baran 29). When an individual decides to use Facebook as a networking tool, they need to first design a page that is suited for the intended purpose. This because anything one posts can be seen by everyone. However, on the negative side of people use it to con other money by having fake identity and details.

Finally, a global social network can have great impact on tags and crowdsourcing. This is because a social media platform such as Facebook will offer you a significant number of people who would easily be tagged and crowd sourced. It is also very easy to convince an individual on Facebook to join a given group on the site as long as he or he has an interest in that particular project or idea (born 31).
