I realize that The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is among the ten biggest fine art museums in the South West region of the United States, whereby it has an encyclopedia collection of about 65,000 works of art. The objects in this museum cover universe cultures dating from historic to current and comprise in-depth holdings of European paintings, American art, attractive arts, and design, Latin American art, Pre-Columbian and African gold, photography, 20th- and 21st-century painting and sculpture, prints and drawings. In this paper, I chose one of the collections of paintings that resonate with me.

The array of 18th-century paintings, kept mainly at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, comprises an attractive collection of paintings from the Federal and Colonial periods. The array contains outstanding examples by America’s excellent historic artists, including Rembrandt van Rijn (Portrait of a Young Woman), Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Still Life with Golden Bream), John Singer Sargent (Mrs. Sarah Montgomery Sears), and Jacob van Ruisdael (Landscape with Cornfields). The Fine arts of Houston Museum collection of American painting shows a lively overview of the story of art in the US from the 18th century to 1940.  

One of the paintings that resonate with me is portraying a young woman by Rembrandt van Rijn, signed and dated by the artist. It is a 1632 oil on canvas painting with a pendant displaying the sitter’s partner rising from a chair. It displays a lady holding a fan, hanging to a portrait of a man rising from his chair. It is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its dimension is Height: 25.6 in (65.2 cm); Width: 19.1 in (48.7 cm). When observed together, the wife and husband appear to respond to one another. As a result, this makes the painter’s most inventive composition of the prehistoric 1630s.   

In the three-quarter length of the painting, the lady sits in full face, in an armchair, and gazes straight out of the portrait. She dresses in a black silk dress with slashed and puffed sleeves, lace wristbands, and a triple close-fitting lace collar. The woman has a fresh complexion and dull fair curly hair. She grasps her right hand, holding a black feather fan by its gold chain, to her bosom; her left-hand rests on a table at her side to the right. Around her neck is a dual twine of pearls; on both arms are a ruby bracelet and a string of pearls. In the painting, there are also pearls on the lady’s ears. 

This beautiful and attractive painting shows the talents and abilities that made Rembrandt van Rijn the top portrait painter of his time and, eventually, one of the greatest painters of all time (Gillies et al., 73). The paint shows his excellent capacity to capture a vibrant, memorable resemblance that appears to breathe underneath the surface. The painter’s technical mastermind the knowledge with which he contrasts translucent with opaque areas, differs his brushstrokes, and expresses particular specifics yet leaves others purposely vague. 

The Fine arts Houston museum is such a nice place to visit, and I strongly recommended it to all visitors. The hundreds and hundreds of the fine arts’ educational value and diversity is admirable and really among the best. I could even spend all day educating myself on each painting’s history since it is very educational. I can say that it lets us go back to history and time and relive it. I love the fact that it offers several sections of the art genre.
