Purpose
This business report is the first of two written assignments that provides students with an exercise to assist in their understanding of important areas of enquiry in management, viz.: the issues, concepts, themes and principles associated with managing a business. The assignment assures comprehension of the Course Learning Outcome 1.4 : ‘Identify cultural issues and make recommendations for business practice’, and will assist you to achieve unit learning outcomes 2 and 4 shown in the learning guide.
As indicated in the lectures, a number of issues including structure, the role of people, attention to sustainability and value of studying management have been discussed. This written assignment provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your level of information literacy and your ability to present a cogent and coherent piece of writing that includes appropriate critical analysis relevant to what is outlined below in terms of this assessment.
Assessment:
1. Read ‘Managing McDonald’s Australia’ (pp.34-36) and McDonald’s scientific management approach (p.47). (Ref: Robbins S, Bergman R, Stagg I, Coulter M, 2015, Management 7, 7th edn, Pearson Australia, Sydney)
2. Visit a McDonalds store and attach a receipt of your visit.

In addition to the required sources shown above, you should use AT LEAST TWO other references that you have found. These two additional sources must have been published after 2011.
Note that newspaper articles and Wikipedia are not considered scholarly sources due to issues about peer review of the material presented. However, you can use newspaper articles and Wikipedia to obtain a general understanding on a topic that you are researching. All sources used then appropriate citing and referencing of these sources should be completed as part of your submission.
Format:
Report format: Executive Summary (no more than 200 words which are not part of the word count), Table of Contents, a brief Introduction, a Body with sub headings divided into 1. Sustainability issues, 2. Scientific Management Approach and 3. Staff Management and Care. A brief Conclusion, Reference list (only items that have been cited in text ie No Bibliography) and an Appendix with your receipt scanned in also need to be included.

The report should be well-formatted.. The language used should be formal rather than informal and should be both clear and grammatically sound. Your written text should not include any spelling errors. Avoid using first person except when it actually reiterates personal experience at your site visit. For example saying “My observations about the multicultural and diverse make up of McDonalds staff at Penrith McDonalds was in accord with what Bloggs (2013);James (2014) and Wells and Lindsay (2015), noted about diversity in fast food workplaces”. DO NOT SAY “I saw a number of people of different ethnicities and ages working at Blacktown McDonalds when I visited” (you need to back it up with theory).
Presentation
1. You must insert a FOOTER with your full name (Last, First) and SID. (Go to Insert in Microsoft Word and select Footer and then Edit Footer. Type in your Last, First Name and SID and select Close Header and Footer)
2. Only WORD DOCS will be accepted and marked.
3. The font to be used for this assignment is either Arial or Times New Roman script, 12 point font size, 1.5 line spacing, and left justified.
Length
1,800 words (± 100 words). Avoid lengthy descriptions, particularly of any material presented in lectures, in your text or from other sources. Limit direct quotations, rather paraphrase and use multiple references of what is discussed in your sources. Note this word count does NOT include the Executive Summary, Table of Contents and the References and Appendices sections.. You can only achieve a high standard by writing drafts and editing – do not attempt to write this the night before it is due.
Engineering, Ethics, Technology and Society (LCA Analysis)
You are part of a company’s engineering group asked to design a new cellular phone that
is essentially disposable – that is, the expected useable life span is around 12-24 months.
Discuss the ethics to consider and a full LCA of the design, fabrication, operation and
disposal stages of the new phone.
What if any are the differences between designing one for the Canadian market and one
for a relatively undeveloped country?
In total, your report should not exceed three pages (references can be put on a fourth
page).
Your report should be fully referenced within the text, including any pictures or diagrams
used. Also make sure you include at the end of the report a list of all References used in
the text.
