Mechanics (20 points)  It is expected that this assignment has excellent mechanics (presentation, grammar and spelling) and exhibits the quality of work capable of a group of graduate students and working professionals.  All sections of the document submitted must be readable at 100% magnification.  Include any resources used in an APA formatted reference section.

Unit I Case Study

Anthropometric Design Exercise

This assignment is designed to provide an opportunity to apply the concepts you have learned in the Unit I Lesson regarding the inclusion of ergonomics during the design process. Specifically, you will be using anthropometric data to develop design recommendations.

As a recent graduate of Columbia Southern University’s Safety and Emergency Services program, you have just been hired as a member of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) staff for Aston Martin Lagonda Automotive Manufacturing located in Gaydon, England. Your first work assignment requires you to work with members of the facilities improvement team to develop design recommendations for new office workstations.

Using the ergonomic design guidelines discussed in the unit lesson and the appropriate anthropometric data from Tables 3.2 and 3.4 in the course textbook, develop a proposal for the new workstations. Your proposal should be written to your management and must include the following elements:

  • a brief introduction that identifies the nature of the work assignment;
  • an overview of the importance of including ergonomics in the design process;
  • an overview of how anthropometry can be used to address human variability;
  • computations for the dimensions of the following:
    • desk (height only),
    • chair (must include a range of adjustability for the height, the dimensions for the seat pan, and the armrests), and
    • computations for any other office equipment that you would like to include in your design proposal (optional);
  • justification for your design decisions by identifying the user population for which you are designing, why that population was selected, the body dimension(s) selected for each computation, and the percentage of the population for which you are designing and why that percentage was selected.

Please keep in mind your design must address human variation and accommodate most of the potential users of the workstation.

Your proposal should be a minimum of two pages in length, not counting the title page and the references page, MUST include a copy of your computations/calculations, and may include graphics to illustrate your design. You are required to use a minimum of two outside sources; one may be the textbook.

1.  What factors drive Nike’s decision to stick with some form of network organizational structure rather than own its manufacturing operations?

2.  Could a shift toward a more mechanistic organizational design help Nike avoid past reputational problems with its global supply chain, such as bad labor practices by some of its foreign contractors?

3.  Draw a diagram that shows what you believe Nike’s present organizational structure looks like.  Be sure to include all possible components. Next look at the diagram as an organization design consultant. Ask: How can this structure be improved? How can Nike gain even more operating efficiency without losing its performance edge in terms of continually coming up with innovative, high quality, top-design shoes?

Homework assignments are an opportunity for the student to apply the course material to the assigned case studies.

Grades for these assignments will be based on the student’s ability to demonstrate their knowledge of the course material and the ability to apply the course material to the case study.

Each student shall write and submit the homework assignments individually.  This is NOT a group assignment.

The homework assignments shall be 2 to 3 pages (do not exceed 3 pages), double spaced.  Include a “Works Cited” section that lists all sources.  The Works Cited section is IN ADDITION to the 2 to 3 pages of material.
