Assignment #3 – Project Part 1 – Location and Scope
Project Description – For your comprehensive project for the semester (worth 40% of your grade), you will develop a building/facility concept in which you will address the “hazard-resistant” design and construction considerations. The project is introduced in Week Three: Instructor Video at 6:40. Please refer to this video for more description.
The building/facility can be located anywhere that U.S. building code applies (we will use the IBC/IRC, and other additional, applicable code requirements you would like to explore) and must be subjected to at least 3 hazards – code-specified (e.g. wind, flood, seismic, rain, snow) or non-code-specified. Likely any location will be subject to 3 hazards, so if you need some guidance about your location, please contact me. There will be 3 assignments that guide you through your project. This is the first assignment, and requires that you locate your building/facility, provide an overview of the scope, and look up code-specified hazard parameters. If you have questions about the scope of the project, please post these to the Q&A Forum.
Project Part 1 – For your project building/facility, please answer all the questions below as completely as possible (if not applicable, please specify N/A). You may use this word document as a template to provide your responses, or use another format if you wish.
- What is the use of your building/facility? Be as specific as possible
- Where will your building be located? Provide lat/long coordinates (should be able to find location based on this) and satellite/aerial image-based maps (as needed) to describe the project location.
- What is the general configuration of your building/facility? Square footage, number of stories, etc.
- What are the primary building materials that will be used – structure, cladding (we will revisit dead loads later)?
- What are the general design loads you need to consider based on quick review of building code?

- Review components of Chapter 16 (Structural Design) and provide numerical responses to describe code-required loads for:
- live loads – based on use and occupancy of the building, what are the live loads? Do they differ throughout the building or are they constant?
- snow loads – look up the design ground snow load, pg
- wind loads – look up the design wind speed for your Risk Category
- rain loads – look up the 100-year, 1 hour rainfall
- earthquake loads – look up the ground acceleration parameters (use USGS site from Week 2, Assignment #1)
- What is your FEMA FIRM Flood Zone (msc.fema.gov)? What is the significance of your flood zone (i.e. what does it mean)?
- What is your Base Flood Elevation?
- What is your Design Flood Elevation?
