Statement of scholarship

Life involves taking risks. Everything we do in life is a risk. Enrolling to a school to do a course is a risk that one makes a decision to undertake. The essence of life itself is a risk. In view of these statements, life without risks is futile. One of the best approaches to live is to take the greatest risks. Life has taught us that having a positive attitude, and the best interest, is the best approach to handle life.

I come from a family which has beaten all odds to make it in educating me and my siblings. Our family right now is composed of three people; my little sister who is in high school, myself, and our lovely mother. Our parents divorced at our very early age. All through we have lived with my mother. The hardships of bringing up two children as a single mother, with an employment whose security cannot be guaranteed, have followed me through the course of my life. The divorce of my parents left psychological scars in us which have been hard to heal. This is one of the challenges that have worsened our lives here on the earth.

My education journey to get to the far that I have come has not been simple. I look back and remember the risk that my single mother took to take me to school, against the challenge of raising school fee. I have grown up living in a government housing project in the East side of the town of London. My mother has been working as a house help to raise our school fees. When she didn’t have work to do, she would move from office to office looking for scholarships for us. When times got hard, going without a meal was an option, in order to supplement to make ends meet. This gave me strength, instead of demoralizing me. I can look back and thank the creator of the universe whom I have been taught he gives hope to the hopeless. Although I had the challenges, I have managed to beat the odds to get to the Bachelors level. I have got to where I am courtesy of my mother’s efforts and scholarships from government agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Although challenges have been characteristic of my life, they are not the major aspect that has made me to excel in my academics. I am naturally in love with engineering.at our home; I used to try to fix anything mechanical before the specialist could be called to fix it. I have demonstrated a strong will and character, in my studies, in the area of engineering. Throughout my high school days, I maintained a high grade and also, I could manage the top three positions in all the exams that entailed ranking.

Currently, I am doing my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering which I expect to complete in a month’s time. My aspiration is to join graduate school immediately and continue with my masters to prepare adequately for the job market. In matters of job and work, I am working with an engineering firm in the city. My short-term goal is to become a reputable engineer with a respectable organization. I also hold a long term objective, which is to become a CEO of a reputable organization in the future. I know that to realize my goal; I have to sharpen my skill, both in education, and in experience. This is why I have undertaken a life mission of providing the best service in every organization I will work with, regardless of the pay. I have also undertaken to practice with careful observance of the professional code of ethics.

Because of the economic scenario and the job market that is fluctuating sometimes unpredictably, I have undertaken a back-up plan, in case my short term goal is not realized immediately. I plan to handle it this way: If I do not secure a good employment after my studies, I am going to start an engineering firm. This will enable me to keep on the pace of professional development, and also enable me meet my economic needs. I take seriously the efforts of the people who gave to see me through my education; therefore, I wouldn’t like to waste some of my time or my skill. Starting a firm will also enable me contribute in improving the lives of others, and also give back to the society through fundraising.

The current job is my second one I have taken in my life. My first job was in an engineering department in a high school. I assisted students in their practical experiments, and helped improve the average score by 20%. I left that job to do my internship with the engineering firm am working with currently. I work in the department of sales and marketing, and we work as a team. In the last financial year, our department was the most improved in the company. My contribution as the main contact person with the customers in explaining to tem how our products work was very notable.

I am ready to invest in higher education, which is a risk itself, because it is the best risk for me at this stage of my life. With my vision and the mission I have stated I have in life, I promise to make maximum use of this scholarship if it is granted to me. I also want to promise that by choosing me, you are making your true choice.

Samuel Colt

Samuel Colt was an inventor who came up with many different types of inventions, all on the side of arms. Apart from being an inventor, he was also an industrialist and an entrepreneur. His inventions have been of great importance within the American society since he invented the revolver since it has been used so often and in different dire circumstances by the American security forces. Therefore his contribution, as discussed below, to the civil war, American democracy, and American history is of great significance and cannot be left out (Blattman, & Miguel, 2010). Therefore this paper discusses the inventions of Samuel colt and how these inventions changed Americans’ lives as well as significant events and times of America like the civil war along with concepts like capitalism, democracy, American exceptionalism, and political revolution (Almond, 1991).

Samuel colt was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1814 to Christopher and Sarah. At his early age, he owned a pistol that had belonged to his grandfather, and this was an early sign of what his interest would be later in life. He became fascinated by the compendium of knowledge at the age of 11 and looking at Robert Fulton’s invention of gunpowder. He got more interested in guns and the process of making them (Houze et al., 2006). When he was 15 years old, he worked at his father’s farm, and here he worked using machine tools and manufacturing processes. He could practice with gun powder during his free time, and severally he caused fires, especially along with lake ware. When he was 16 years old, he worked for brig Corvo, and from working with ships, he came to understand how a gun was made in such a way to revolve from observing ships wheel and capstan.

From this idea, he carved model guns. Upon returning to Massachusetts, he showed his father, who agreed to fund him for their production. His father withdrew his financial support after the firearms did not perform appropriately as expected, and therefore colt opted for other ways (Houze et al., 2006). He went on for a tour about the laughing gas in most places of the country, and therefore this tour brought him enough money to have his guns build by professional gun makers. After this, it was successful, and thus his guns began being used. In 1936 he received a patent for his weapons, and he began producing many firearms. By 1837 he had made more than 1000 guns.

The Mexican-American war brought him a great fortune as he supplied approximately one thousand revolver guns to the union during this period, which made him get back to the business that seemed to have been dying. Apart from his, the civil war, which was a significant time of American history, made him get into business as he supplied arms to the union only(Blattman, & Miguel, 2010). His contribution, therefore, towards the civil war and his provision of arms to the union only can be seen as a way of being patriotic and at the same time protecting the people of the nation. This is because he knew very well that the guns were to be appropriately used by the union, unlike selling them to ordinary people who were likely to use them against anyone they thought to be against them and cause unnecessary bloodshed at a time when gun ownership was not yet well-grounded within America.

Therefore his contribution towards the civil war is seen as positive and not harmful as his guns helped lessen the civil war and the southern side to come to be at peace with the northern side (Blattman, & Miguel, 2010). His industry also contributed towards American exceptionalism to a great extent, as this is the industry that made and led many people to own guns. Therefore through gun ownership, people have been able to protect themselves (Madsen, 1998). However, the concept of American exceptionalism is a complicated one since America, as seen as unique from other countries, is sometimes seen in that manner in all evil ways that democracy is believed to have brought into place (Almond, 1991). It even comes to gun ownership, whereby the freedom of owning guns is at times seen as not a kind of freedom but as a kind of societal destruction, especially with the mass shootings and the racial discrimination that have been happening of late in most places within America.

Even though his legacy and invention have had a very positive impact on the way officers fight enemies and keep the peace today, it is also seen as a destructive force that encourages war and lack of consensus within America and the whole world.

American democracy, as drawn from the civil war intertwined with colt’s invention, informs us that democracy for everyone is essential. With the slavery which was taking place and which was the leading cause of the civil war, it is crucial to realize that his invention helped attain rights and freedom for the slaves since if it were not for the use of his revolver guns, then slavery would have continued since the then-president had succeeded into power on terms that slavery was to stop (Almond, 1991). However, the southern side wanted to continue with slavery, and therefore the war broke out. The northern side, which also supported the union, fought and made sure that the north side and the union won such that slavery was abolished. Therefore his invention led to the upholding of human rights.

In conclusion, his invention also influenced social life in America in that black people were treated with more dignity, and slavery stopped. Apart from this, due to gun ownership, no one is allowed to oppress any other since they can protect themselves using guns.

According to Censky (2011), the level of unemployment has increased at very high rate in comparison to the employment rate. This has occurred in contrast to the expectations that job creation would occur. The unemployment rate has resulted due to the occurrence of a recession in the economy. The nation is under an economic recession; therefore, job creation is quite a difficult task at the present time. Economic recession has resulted due to the government excessive expenditure on response to several emerging disasters. The disasters include occurrence of unpredicted floods, and the occurrence of tsunami. In addition, the stalemate in Washington and the increasing gas prices have a role to play in the emergence of economic recession, and have created a tremendous uncertainty among the businesses.

The economic recession has created uncertainty among the potential business employers. The employers have great fears of dynamics of the existing federal tax policy and spending cuts. This has occurred since the congress has not yet attained a consensus on debt ceiling and effective measures of cutting down the nation’s deficit. The fear of the existing dynamics on the economy has led to small business employers developing a habit of observing what happens to large businesses in terms of job creation.

Politics have significant influence in the development of an effective-economic status of a nation. The nation has experienced political games that have resulted in a decline on the wage level for employees effectively. Politicians have engaged in a blame game of who has responsibility of decline in wage level, in the nation. In addition, the politicians have minimized the chances of job seekers participating effectively on job recovery. The reduction on employment levels formed the basis of political rhetoric that emerged from two sides of the nation’s politics. For example, the republican claim that the nation has inherent regulations and the stimulus-spending binge is not effective; therefore, job creation has a limitation. In addition, the republican add that the existing national debt forms challenge that the private sector has to face in order to create jobs. The government, on the other hand, claim that the public understands that there is a limitation on the available jobs. In addition, the government promises to implement reform patent laws after the congress passes the bill in order to create jobs.

Macroeconomics makes an analysis of the behavior, performance and decision-making of the nation’s economy. Unemployment rate is one of the factors that macroeconomics takes into consideration for the analysis of the entire economy. Censky (2011) article depicts a correlation of unemployment and employment rates in which the two factors have a negative correlation. This correlation results from the fact that the economy is in a recession due to the uncertainty created by several factors; such as, tsunami, stalemate in Washington, higher gas prices and floods. The uncertainty has led to employers developing a reluctant attitude towards employment. As such, the employment rate has reduced drastically for the whole nation.

Politics inherent in a given nation determines the strength of the economy. The government acts as the governing organ for formulating an effective macroeconomic policy. These policies include monetary and fiscal policies. As the government engages extensively on politics, the economy becomes a victim of subjection into a recession. However, the government may avoid such circumstances through concentrating on analyzing, as well as formulating an effective measure to adopt in order to safeguard the nation’s economy.
