Rough Draft Due: Submit Evaluation Essay to the dropbox labeled Evaluation Essay Rough Draft by Wednesday, April 15th at 9:35 a.m. (Central Time)
Final Draft Due: Evaluation Essay due in dropbox marked “ENGL 1020 Critical Assessment” by Wednesday, April 22nd at 11:59 p.m. (Central Time); No late Evaluation Essays will be accepted
Purpose: In an evaluation essay, your goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of something by developing criteria, or standards to judge the thing, ranking those criteria in order to focus on the most important criteria, and then applying the criteria to evaluate how effectively the thing meets the criteria.
Think, for instance, of a movie. If you were evaluating a movie, then you would have to create criteria to evaluate the movie. So, two of your criteria might be the number of awards that the movie won and how many times the characters said the word “the.” If you were evaluating whether or not this was a great movie, then you would have to rank the criteria by which criteria were the most important in determining if the film was great or not. In this case, the number of awards the film won would probably be more important in determining its greatness, so you would probably focus on that criterion rather than the amount of times the characters used the word “the.”
Tasks (How to write this essay):
Write a minimum of 4-5 pages (Must be a minimum of halfway down on the last page for it to count as a page). The essay must also include a correctly-formatted works cited page that does not count toward the 4-5 page minimum page count.
Write for an academic audience (no contractions, first- or second-person perspective, slang, or clichés).
The writer should start by reviewing the following campaign websites: Donald Trump (https://www.donaldjtrump.com/), Joe Biden (https://joebiden.com/), Elizabeth Warren (https://elizabethwarren.com/), Bernie Sanders (https://berniesanders.com/?nosplash), Cory Booker (https://corybooker.com/), and Pete Buttigieg (https://peteforamerica.com/). These are all websites for candidates who either were running for president but have now dropped out of the race (Warren, Booker, and Buttigieg) or for candidates who are still running for president (Trump, Biden, and Sanders).
The writer should then come up with a list of aesthetic and process criteria to evaluate these websites. Explanations of what aesthetic and process criteria are can be found in Chapter 10 of your textbook. Then, the writer will rank these criteria from most important to least important in determining the effectiveness of a political candidate’s website. Please note that you will not use all of these criteria, so this part of the process, where you eliminate some criteria in favor of focusing on the most important criteria, is a very important step that you will not even explicitly mention in your paper. This is work that you must do before you even start writing the paper.
The essay’s argument (thesis) should focus on arguing that one presidential candidate’s website is more effective than two of these other candidates’ websites and providing a minimum of 3-5 aesthetic and process criteria that should be used to evaluate presidential websites. You must have at least one aesthetic criterion and one process criterion.
Each body paragraph should utilize a topic sentence that argues that the presidential candidate’s website that is most successful better addresses one specific criterion than the other two websites. Please note that the paper is arranged according to criteria and not according to the websites.
The author should then use at least one example from each of the three websites in order to support the argument in each topic sentence.
Citation: The writer should provide correctly-formatted signal phrases/attributive tags for all summaries, paraphrases, and quotations that reference material from sources, and correctly-formatted in-text citations must be provided for all paraphrases and quotations. Furthermore, the author should provide full introductions to sources the first time they are mentioned in the paper (author’s full name, the full title of the source, and a one-sentence summary of the main idea of the source), and a works cited page must document all sources and be formatted according to MLA guidelines.
Format: The essay should be formatted according to MLA guidelines, which are accessible in your textbook or through the Purdue Online Writing Lab.
Grammar and mechanics: Has ability to write using edited American English. Proofread and edit for issues that include, but are not limited to, those regarding spelling and word usage. Subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, fused sentences, absence or misuse of apostrophes, and absence or misuse of commas exemplify other problematic issues.
Skills (Learning Outcomes Achieved): Demonstrate understanding of and ability to read and respond to
the demands of the rhetorical situation (author, audience, and
subject) in both oral and written communication.
Read critically and analyze various types of assigned readings on
the basis of structure, pattern, and meaning in order to produce
original papers that show development of topic through
organization (such as topic sentence, support of the central idea
through details, and rhetorical patterns).
Invent, write, revise, edit, and rewrite formal essays in response
to readings which develop appropriate rhetorical patterns (i.e.,
narration, example, process, comparison/contrast, classification,
cause/effect, definition, argumentation) and other special
function(s) (i.e., literary analysis or research) while
demonstrating writing skills from process to product.
Produce final papers that show growth in principles of good
writing, such as organization (e.g., introduction/body/conclusion
or outlining), development (clarifying transitions between
sentences and paragraphs), unity (connected ideas), and which
demonstrate an understanding of the substance of the topic.
Complete at least one writing assignment that demonstrates a
limited use of MLA documentation form and basic research
ability.
Participate in collaborative work with other students via small
group discussions and presentations, workshop-style classes
devoted to particular issues (such as paragraph structure or voice
and tone), and produce, accept, and use constructively feedback
from writing instructors, other students, and other university
writers/instructors to take control of your own writing.
Create mechanically sound papers relatively free of errors in
grammar and mechanics.
Criteria for success: Please consult with the rubric for this assignment.

As pricing decisions are being made, especially by managers, they should be based on cost as well as market factors. Using cost as a basis for pricing decisions ensures that the sale of the item brings in more returns than the cost of its purchase. This way the business can meet its operational objectives and still balance its cash flow by making more profits than losses. As for market factors, their consideration is so that pricing is made according to the market at that time. In that, if the price of an item has inflated, the selling price will have to be increased as well so that its sale can counter the buying price and still bring in profit to the business.
The law also has great influence on pricing decisions since it is the government that sets and in turn enforces taxation through its courts. This means that if a government places a large amount of tax to be charged on an item, a manager is obliged to consider that charge during the pricing decision of that item. This guarantees the manager that all the costs incurred during its purchase are covered up after its sale. In cases of people buying products in bulk and at higher prices, the taxes are usually assumed to be part of the price at which they are buying. In turn, they sell the product at a lower price to ensure regular continuity of their sales and it is the consumer who eventually pays the larger amount of the products’ tax.
Discounted Cash flow methods are valuation methods that are used in a business to estimate the effectiveness of an opportunity for an investment. It makes use of future cash flow projections which it discounts in order to arrive to a present value which is then used to make an evaluation of the potential involved in making the investment. If the result value is higher than the current cost of the considered investment, then the opportunity is perceived as a good one. Therefore in disagreement, it is possible as well as efficient to use Discounted Cash Flow methods to make evaluations of various investments in research and development.

1. Monopoly Market Structure
This is the market structure that is characterized by a single seller having sole power and control over the market’s strategic resources that are competed for by unlimited number of buyers/consumers. Under monopoly market structure, the monopolists determine both output level and prices at which their products or services trade (Goldberg, 2000). The market is also characterized by exit and entry barriers, thereby limiting the number of firms in the market. Given that monopolists have control over price, quality, and output, they therefore maximizes on the economic returns. In the short-run, monopolists enjoy supernormal profits given that they are price makers. Monopolists are profit maximizers and choose their equilibrium level of output and price at the point where marginal revenue equals to marginal cost (MR=MC) (Stackelberg, Bazin, Urch, & Hill, 2011). A practical example of industries that enjoy monopoly power is the electricity and power generation industries. The energy sector enjoys patent rights and protection that give it monopoly power. Therefore, the industry only prices at the point where marginal cost of production matches marginal revenue generated from the sales.
2. Perfectly Competitive Market Structure Benefits Consumers
Under perfectly competitive market, the equilibrium prices are naturally determined by the market forces of demand and supply with no single player having power to influence the prevailing prices, hence no price exploitation (Goldberg, 2000). Secondly, this market structure is characterized by production and allocative efficiency since they produce at the point where price equals marginal cost (P=MC) and produces quality products that are homogeneous in nature (Stackelberg, Bazin, Urch, & Hill, 2011). This market structure therefore produces a pareto optimal level of output and price that eliminates dead weight loss to both consumers and suppliers. One of such markets includes textile manufacturing industry that is characterized by free entry and exit. Given many buyers and sellers, consumers therefore benefit from high quality cloths and clothes at relatively affordable prices as no seller will benefit by increasing price above the equilibrium market rates.
3. Market Structure Characterized by Intensive Advertisement
Monopolistic Competition is a media form of market structure that is dominated by advertising. This owes to the fact that monopolistic competition market structure deals in products that are highly differentiated through branding, packaging, and advertising (Goldberg, 2000). To create a difference and have make more sales over competitors in the same market, suppliers in this market heavily invest in advertising a way of gaining a competitive edge over others (Goldberg, 2000).
4. Analysis of the Economic Contribution of Capitalism
This argumentative essay has focused on the contribution of capitalism in the economic growth and development of different global economies. The primary question that this essay has attempted to answer is “Is capitalism the driving force of economic growth and development?” In trying to explore this topic, counter arguments have been presented with diverse views and opinions about the question. The argument starts by exploring and outlining the concept of capitalism theory. Under this, the essay briefly introduces the background and historical foundation of capitalism. Adam Smith’s view on capitalism is briefly explored in this part. The essay also clearly defines capitalism and its economic relevance. In the history of capitalism, the surrounding economic applications are explored in this section. It further proceeds to identify the basic classifications of capitalism. Here, two capitalism classes are identified; social market and state capitalism.
The essay then proceeds to the main discussion, where diverse opinions are presented. In this section, different claims pertaining to capitalism and economic growth are presented. The presentation starts by looking at some of the contributions made my others scholars concerning the topic of discussion. The essay closely takes a look at the views and opinions earlier presented in support or against the research question. In particular, the essay focuses on the economic aspects of capitalism by identifying the contributions of capitalism to the economic growth and development. To explore this argument, the essay gives account of economic variables that have been victims of capital structures. The main ideas presented here include social and economic inequality, skewed wealth distribution, and violation of human rights.
In presenting this argument, the essay starts by exploring the history of capitalism with respect to economic variables. Adam Smith’s view that capitalism is detrimental to economic and social prosperity opens the account. According to Adam Smith, capitalism is a perfect bridge to inequality and disequilibrium in any economic set-up. The essay does not stop with Adam Smith’s argument. It digs deeper on facts and evidences to support this argument. Some of the claims and evidences presented in support of inability of capitalism to contribution to economic growth include inequality in income and wealth distribution, reduced productivity, violation of human rights, and social injustices. To support this theory, the essay has introduced a perfect example of capitalistic states, North Korea. Social and economic aspect of the Koreans is compared to those of Americans. The essay eludes these differences to violation of human rights, starvation, poor economic performance, and poverty; which are key indicators of capitalism.
To make the argument stronger, this essay has used exploratory techniques by involving a collection of theories about capitalism and citing practical examples of capitalistic economies. Some of the sentences that are used to building on this argument include socio-economic growth indicators and inequalities. In analyzing the evidence in support for the fact that capitalism is anti-economic growth, the evidences discussed in the essay were founded on accuracy and reliability of the source information. In addition, the essay ensures precision, clarity, equal representation, sufficiency, reliability of the discussion and expressions.
