Curriculum Mapping

Introduction

The collection of information concerning the teacher’s curriculum, based on the school calendar, is known as curriculum mapping. The information identifies some core contents, the processes, and the assessments, which are used in the curriculum for the subject area. It takes places within the grade levels and a grade level hence serving to be a detailed plan of lesson for school curriculum year. This paper tries to examine how curriculum map can be used in teaching the chosen topics, and the modifications made to the map for differentiating learning styles and one’s ability (Glass, 2000).

The curriculum mapping helps in improving communication within parents and communities about curriculum and all that every teacher covers. When choosing a lesson topic, one can use the curriculum map by collecting information on what the topic is all about, then going through the information, and then mixing the group reviews after which the teacher determines on the points that can be revised immediately (Hale, 2008).

Modification and extensions provide students with avenues of acquiring the contents, which has a sense of ideas, and developing the teaching materials in order for the students. Different learning styles and abilities may also include how students show how they have mastery of concepts. The key to differentia is finding how students can display their learning to meet the required specific needs (Kallick, 2009).

Conclusion

Curriculum mapping improves the instruction by laying clear objectives of what are taught to eliminate unnecessary repetitions. It is also allows the objectives to be met in time as well as reflects on the student’s scores in class. Therefore, teachers should always carry out curriculum mapping to make time easy for them as well as making students to grasps things easily.

Discuss what is meant by the term exempt employee and the different exemption criteria established for identifying this group

Discuss what is meant by the term exempt employee and the different exemption criteria established for identifying this group of workers. Which do you currently fall under? If given the choice to change categories, would you? Why or why not?

Who is an Exempt employee?

Exempt employees are a type of employees that are exempted from requirements pertaining to overtime as well as minimum wages. These employees must however satisfy certain conditions in order to be exempted from over time and minimum wages laws. There are various criteria in these exemptions. It would be important to acknowledge that the exemptions are not effected on the basis of an individual’s job title. An individual’s job duties would have to be following certain established rules. These rules however differ with varying employee types.

Categories for exception

There are various categories or criteria for employee exemption. It would be important to acknowledge that the salary of an individual would not be the sole determinant. The criteria are

Executive exemption- in this category the employee must be earning $455 weekly to qualify for this criterion. They must also be undertaking the management of enterprises, subdivisions or departments and have at least two subordinates over whom he has the power to fire, hire, promote or even advance. Their recommendations in this respect therefore bear specific weight.

Administrative exemption- must be earning a weekly pay of $455 and above with their key function being office work that is non manual and related directly to general operations of the business. They can exercise discretion as well as independent judgment.

Learned professional exemption- the minimum wage per week is set at $455 with their main function pertaining to advanced knowledge in learning or scientific fields like nursing, law, accounting and medicine. The knowledge is attained through lengthy intellectual instruction in specific fields.

Currently which category do you fall under?

I fall under administrative exception. I have the ability to make independent decisions as well as have discretion over a wide range of issues.

Given a choice would you change categories?

Given a choice I still would not change categories. The requirement for consideration in particular category is the same and there are no exceptional benefits for any category. An individual is in a particular category because they are acknowledged to have so much control over their time and even have better compensation than the other non exempt employees.

2. What is meant by division of labor? What are blue-collar, white-collar, and pink-collar segments of the workforce? Provide examples of each.

What is division of labor?

This is the partitioning of the process of production into disconnected elements. The partitioned elements are then assigned to different workers. The basis of division of labor is the notion that workers are in a better position to attain enhanced efficiency degrees due to the restriction to specific projects. It is actually related to specialization having in mind that the complex jobs would be subdivided into smaller units which with each task being assigned to specific individuals. In this case, an individual will end up doing a small part of the job all aimed at reaching the main goal. You will acknowledge however that the categories of division of labor can be based on different things like skills, sex etc. this leads to a reduction in cost as well as enhanced efficiency.

What are blue-collar segments of the workforce?

Blue collar jobs are the type of jobs that more or less incorporate manual labor. Workers in this category are paid according to the hourly rates and not annual salaries. This term originated from the association of workers in this category with blue uniforms. As much as the payment they receive may equal that of some office workers, they are not entitled to other benefits like vacation, bonuses and healthcare. An example of these workers is construction workers as well as automotive repair.

What are the White-collar segments of the workforce?

This segment of the workforce incorporates individuals who are highly trained or even degreed. In this case, these are vocations in the career level. The term white collar stemmed from the fact that individuals used to wear attires with white collars to appear professional to the clients or subordinates. Examples are clerical workers as well as managerial workers.

What are the pink collar segments of the workforce?

This is the workforce that is considered low paid and therefore coming with low status. It is definitely not a career. Examples in this category are nannies, babysitters, secretaries receptionists and maids. They are mainly taken by women.

Integration of more interaction between students

As an instructor in an equipment maintenance course there are several challenges that I face. One of the challenges is the interaction between the students in my class. There is a tendency in the class for minority students keeping to themselves during class. Female students are almost invisible in class and they rarely speak or interact with others in the class. This lack of interaction between students could hurt their job placement in the future when they are through with their course. There are several things I can do as an instructor to integrate more interaction between my students. Among the things I can integrate in my course work is group projects and assignments.I will ensure that groups of up to four students are set up on all the course projects. There will also be some class assignments which must be worked on in the small groups that have been created. The projects and assignments will then be discussed openly in class and all the group members will be expected to participate. I will ensure that the projects and assignments are very challenging which require multiple inputs from the members of the groups. This will ensure that there is more interaction between the students in groups. After presentations, students can ask for clarifications from those who presented on something they did not quite understand.

I will also encourage peer reviews and editing of individual assignments .this will be through encouraging students to send emails to each other on drafts of their assignments and get feedback before they eventually turn them in. Through the random generated homework, students get a way of working together and helping each other. This will increase the interaction between the students in the class as they will be constantly working together in the peer reviews. I come up with questions to be discussed in class. The discussions questions will be well formulated and hence provide an excellent opportunity for thoughtful responses from the students. There will be encouragement of a free discussion environment in class which will led top more participation from students. Through the discussions there will be more interaction between the students as they will ask and answer questions within the discussions. More interaction between students will lead to the prevention of having a learning environment that is boring, repetitive and isolating.

Recruiting more females into the programThe female student population in my class is just 2%.This is a very small percentage, and as an instructor I should strive to recruit more female students into my program. I can achieve the recruitment through mentorship programs. The value from mentorship is something tat can not be replaced. I will ensure that I get women who have been successful in the field to be part of the mentorship programs. This will ensure that the girls get mentorship from these women which will encourage many of them to get recruited into the program. I will also ensure that there is a slight reduction of the fee female students are supposed to pay for the program as compared to their male counterparts. This will act as an incentive which will attract more female students who previously shied away due to the cost associated with the program. I will ensure that I partner with companies that do equipment maintenance so as to ensure that they employ more females. This will get more females recruited in the program as they will be sure of employment after they are through with the course.

Importance of addressing these issuesIt is very important to address these issues for both the program and success of the students. There will be a lot of success for students due to more interaction between them. This is because they will get more ideas which they will apply in the course and eventually be successful. The program will also be successful in that the interactions between the students will lead to making contacts which will ensure that all the students get job placements after their course. Getting more females in the program will lead to a more balanced environment in terms of gender which will lead to better performance among the students.

Multicultural approach in redesigning an all inclusive curriculumThe course materials which I have been using are about ten years old and they have been used by previous instructors. I have never used multicultural teaching practices in my teaching methods .Therefore, I will have to redesign the current curriculum to make it more inclusive for all students in the course. I will take various approaches when it comes to redesigning the curriculum sop as to ensure that all students are fully included in the program. I will use a contributions approach whereby I will focus on discrete cultural elements, festivals or holidays. Through this students will have an understanding of other cultural groups leading to more interaction and understanding between them. Ethnic addictive approach is another approach to be taken whereby there is addition of some ethnic content in the curriculum without any change in the mainstream structure of the curriculum. I will also use a transformative approach whereby I will restructure the curriculum in such a way that issues, concepts, and events are viewed from a diverse cultural and ethnic perspective. I will also take a social approach whereby decisions and actions will be made based on issues and concepts which are being studied.

The multicultural approach in the curriculum will lead to more interaction between the students and hence the program will be a success. The program will also lead to giving instructions in the least possible time .the curriculum will ensure that as an instructor I act as a guide and coworker with students and not their taskmaster who just assigns lessons and recitations. Through the multicultural approach there will be more interaction between me the instructor and students.
