Introduction

The legitimacy of survey research findings has its foundation on the extent to which the sample used in that research represents the entire population. While the samples chosen have a bearing on the outcome of the result, researchers have rarely considered the influence of incentives on creation of bias in the samples especially in cases where the sole motivation for participation in the research is internal motives. The researchers in the provided case aimed at considering how sampling methods influence survey results in student cheating. The authors opined that, in cases where questionnaires explore immoral actions, it is quite possible for underreporting to occur.

These authors and researchers have founded their research on a report that stated that there exists alarming rates of cheating in institutions of higher learning or colleges. However, there are variations in the percentages that take on this vice with some reports placing it at 89% and others on 23%. In addition, some studies show that the rates of cheating in these institutions are increasing by the day.

The researchers aimed at exploring whether students report varied cheating levels when reporting on their own actions, or the actions of other students of whom they know best. This was done in an effort to explore how valid the reports on cheating behavior may be. Their hypotheses in this case were the following.

Surveys carried out using volunteer participants and incorporating course incentives influence or have a bearing on the amount or level of cheating that is reported.

In case of underreporting of cheating rates, the reported rates of cheating for best-known friends would be comparatively high.

Materials & Method

A.Who/what did they study? (Be specific.)

The research included participants from university population. The participants’ incentive states were sampled using three questionnaires. One questionnaire had 126 items and was sent through the institution’s mail, while another questionnaire in corporate 33 items and was sent in the same manner. The other questionnaire offered course credit. In addition, the researchers considered whether age, gender and academic achievement have any bearing on the rates of cheating.

3.Results& Discussion

A.What did they find?

The researchers found out that the students who participated for course credits had higher levels of cheating than others who did not. Students who responded to the full form had a higher rate of cheating than students who responded to the short form. The researchers also found out that there was no difference in reporting oneself as far as gender was concerned. It is worth noting that sample differences in achievement and age could not explain the variations in the outcomes of the samples.

B.Did the results match their hypothesis (es)?

The results of the study marched the hypothesis perfectly. In the research, the subjects who were solicited using emails and were not offered any incentive reported considerably lower rates of cheating than the subjects who were recruited via course credit incentives. These results were consistent or supported the volunteer subjects’ personality attributed such as altruism, intelligence and an increased need for approval.

The significance of the study lay in the exploration of the previous reports pertaining to the cheating behavior of college students. They wanted to establish whether there was any variation in the students’ level of cheating when reporting their own actions, or the action s of other people for who they may know quite a lot.

Unconditional release from Reserve Component

My name is called SSG Songa Mohamed. I am a citizen of the United States of America (USA) with valid documents such as the driving license and the National Social Security number. I would like to send my sincere request to be unconditionally released from the Army Reserve Component. My main aim of doing this is to move a step in my military career. Being discharged of my duties in the Reserve Component will gibe me an opportunity to get enlisted in the Active Component. This was the major reason why I opted to join the army. In fact, it has been my long time dream.

I am well qualified for this enlistment because of my long time active participation in the service. Out of my 13 years in the military, I spent six in the Reserve Component. During this period, I undertook a variety of duties in different capacities. Because of a dedicated service, I was assigned to 141ST. QM. CO. Tyler, TX 22 months ago.

Therefore, it is my pleasure to request for this enlistment because I now have over nine years of experience in the duty service. This has sharpened my skills and built me professionally. At the same time, I have the right education that is in line with the stipulated standards. Besides, I now have Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) qualifications of level three. Lastly, I am an active person with dependants.

If considered, I will get a chance to continue serving my beloved nation as a disciplined soldier. Moreover, it will motivate me further to continue with my role of giving my family the necessary financial support. However, I also promise to work so hard and deliver my best for the sake of the people of America. This is my best time to be proud of my choice.

The Visitor

Uncle Cornelius is a rich bachelor who lives his life travelling from one place to another luring women one after the other. He says that he can not hold a relationship with a woman for more than twelve hours and pities those married men who live with the same woman for years. Wherever Cornelius goes, he attracts the attention of women though to other men, he portrays himself as a harmless well mannered person who a father could entrust with his precious only daughter.

Cornelius is not only interested in women, but also interested in scorpions and other peculiar arthropods like spiders. As much as he wanted to travel to Jerusalem through the desert to have fun, he also was in a venture to hunt for a scorpion that he needed to replace the one he had with because it had an appendage missing. Even in the desert heat, he was eager to walk out of his car with the aim of finding a scorpion. When he finally saw one, he was so pleased indicating his love to hunt for scorpions. In his diary, he says that he enjoyed the adventure of removing the sand carefully from the barrow as much as one would love a treasure hunt.

The decision by Dahl to tell this story could be for entertainment purposes, but no one can deny that there is a lesson to be learned. Uncle Cornelius was not a good friend to Aziz despite all the things he did to make him comfortable in his house after being stranded in the desert for hours. Cornelius was quick to desire both the wife and daughter of his host even after Aziz expressed his concern for his daughter to him. Aziz was trying to alienate his daughter from the rest of the world because she was very beautiful and he feared that men like Cornelius would be eager to have sexual relations with her. The writer Dahl in this story is targeting men who live the kind of lifestyle lived by Cornelius. In addition to the riches, Cornelius was arrogant undermining the poor calling them beasts like the case of the man at the filling station and the one at the shop where he went to purchase water. Cornelius was quick to judge them by associating their looks to shameful and fatal diseases like syphilis. He only associated well with the rich like Aziz who had a marvelous house. He was able to judge him as a person he could relate to because he had an expensive car and because he was well dressed when he first saw him. The lesson from this short story is that it is important to treat people with respect despite their social or economic status. The desire to have it all could have made Cornelius contract a contagious disease for Aziz’s other daughter who was suffering form the worst case of Leprosy.

As much as acquiring knowledge and skills through extensive research and concrete examples is crucial, it is equally important to learn from other people’s experience. Though this, one can relate to the characters and learn a lesson from them. Most writers who carry out research of scholarly topics then write academic stories for students to read often do not capture the interests of the students so they might not read the story in the first place. Therefore, in my opinion, I would say without a doubt that learning from a fictional story like that written by Dahl, is legitimate.
