CAT App – TRADE – DUE OCT 19, 2020
Background:
If there were any take-away from Unit 2 that I would hope you always remember, it is that trade makes us better off. There was only one legitimate reason to go against comparative advantage, though, and that was due to National Security.
On October 2, 2020, Chinese officials issued a statement while at the World Trade Organization meetings citing that the U.S. efforts to ban downloads for services such as TikTok and WeChat violated WTO rules and agreements. For those not familiar with the situation, the US government claims that the parent organization of TikTok represents a national threat. Our government said that TikTok and similar platforms could continue growing in the US only if the parent company sold the operations of their applications to American businesses.
Prompt:
While hanging out with friends and watching silly videos on TikTok, an acquaintance comments that the app should have been banned in the US. He is one of many people that believe the parent company is collecting data on users from the U.S., and using software to spread propaganda. Although this person acknowledges that all domestic social media companies (and many of the tech companies, in general), are collecting similar information and/or are being used to spread fake information, he contends that the Chinese owned firm is worse.
To what extent do you agree with this person’s assertions? That is, what do we know about the information that is collected during our tech usage, and do you think that information in the hands of foreign countries is innately worse than when the company is owned by Americans? Should we ban the technology if the parent company refuses to sell the operations to US firms?
Are there ways we (the U.S.) could we restrict the importing of services to the US? (After all, that is the root of the Chinese counter claim – that they are providing a service.) Should we restrict such trade, specifically tech programs such as TikTok? What are the economic implications of such restrictions? Provide at least TWO approaches to restricting trade.
Note – this is a little different than previous prompts. Open with two ideas on how to restrict the trade of services / tech programs. Describe each, along with the likely economic consequences.
What are the implications of the current proposal to ban or force the sale of the operations?
Close out with a paragraph on whether or not you think we should restrict this trade.
Suppose you are responsible for making a recommendation to the President. You have several options – ban the Chinese technology, force them to sell to American firms, implement one of the two options you’ve listed, or do nothing at all. Before you make a recommendation, you decide to do a little research. What information (or types of information) would you try to find? (Note that you don’t have to actually find the information, but tell me the types of information you might seek.)

Most Memorable Test Taking Moment
Most Memorable Test Taking Moment
There was this time that I had fully prepared myself for a mathematics test, confident and sure to pass it excellently. During the moment I was taking the paper, the questions seemed very simple that I kept smiling to myself I quickly worked on all the questions step by step without leaving any blanks to me it was a perfect paper that I was to get almost everything. Within one hour thirty minutes I was already through and since there was one hour more before I could submit the test paper, I began to sleep. While I was sleeping I heard my mathematics teacher saying that we should be winding up since there were only fifteen minutes left. I work up and began revising my answers but then I realized I had not read the instructions. Looking at the instructions page it was actually indicated that there were questions on all pages of the test paper. Myself I had only scrolled through four pages to my surprise I actually had not handled six more questions and there were only eight minutes left.
I actually was worried since the time remaining could not let me finish up the remaining questions my teacher had actually seen me sleeping during the test moment and it could be really tough seeking for an extension. I managed to handle two questions before time and since some of my classmates were also not through our teacher agreed to add us ten more minutes which enabled me to handle three more questions out of the six I only answered five leaving out one question. To me I will always recall that day, a day when my confidence was turned to worries.
Most embarrassing Test Taking Moment
There was this day when I was taking my English test I was so sure that I had met all the examination requirements. Midway through the exam, one of my classmates was found copying from some material he had carried from outside and our English teacher was so upset. This prompted a thorough search on everyone; as usual I was so comfortable with myself that I did not bother to check. When it came to my turn the teacher frisked my pockets but then to the least of my expectations a green paper written on one side came out of my trouser pocket. It is then that I remembered my previous day revision rough work. I tried to explain but my teacher was so furious my classmates too had the idea that I was also copying. The English teacher canceled my paper as a punishment and was to give me a zero for that paper. To me that was my death sentence very embarrassing.
Where did I “lose it”?
Some moments when I keep a good record always passing the tests, it reaches a point were I see no sense of taking them since I always pass them sometimes even with little effort. But then that becomes my weakness to achieving bad results, it is that point when I loose it.
Where did I finally “Get it”?
Good test results always makes sense to me from the exam the fact that I sometimes get bad results indicate that there is indeed some sense in taking tests. The urge to strive hard so us to understand what I have been taught and pass tests always makes sense to me with regard to taking test.
Jobs and careers I think about and how is test taking related to them even if only in the most remote way?
My main focus career wise is to be an aeronautics engineer. Mathematics is very vital for this area and the only way to make sure I have understood what I have been taught is being taken through some tests. Good test results always encourage me bad results give me the alert hat I need to put more effort to realize my dream.
If I were on “Who wants to be a millionaire?” and I needed a lifeline for a test taking question, who would I call and why?
I would call my science teacher he always seems to understand everything regarding test taking. He has always encouraged us in class equipping us with needed knowledge when handling test. Furthermore he is more of a friend than my teacher hence he wouldn’t let me down if I called him.
What is your plan of action, areas of concern from your first test taking experience?
My first experiences with test taking actually taught me a lot especially with regard to test preparation, meeting the exam regulation and first going through the exam instructions page before handling the questions. My plan of action is to adequately address this weakness points before doing other future exams.
List the activities you will be doing to improve conditions for the next test taking experience?
The main activities will be first reading hard for my test, checking all areas around me for any materials that are not allowed in the test room and reading the instructions page so as to have a preview of what I am needed of during that test.
