Tolerance and Liberalism
Tolerance, stated simply, is the realization that people are different and the acceptance of this realization. Tolerance is the readiness to recognize that people have different opinions and behaviors. All individuals have their own way of thoughts and behavior. These differences in people’s thoughts and behaviors, in their opinions and attitudes, and in their practices, may stem from factors that are not alterable such as race, ethnicity, age or sex, or from factors that can be changed for instance culture, religion and nationality.
Liberalism, alternatively also stated simply, is belief in equal freedoms and rights for all. What this means is that regardless of one’s race, religion, nationality, culture, ethnicity and other such factors that make up an individual, everyone is entitled to the same basic rights and freedoms. In short, every person has a right to be treated the same as every other person. From the above definitions it is clear that tolerance and liberalism are terms that are closely related to one another. Liberalism is the fundamental policy or perspective underlying tolerance. Tolerance is the application of liberalism at an individual level. That is, for one to be tolerant one must be liberal in thinking and behavior.
These two terms can thus be used to describe how individuals in the university setting could interact with one another, not just in the classroom but also elsewhere within the university campus. As one looks around the university it is easy to note that there is a great variety within the student body. There are students of varying ethnicity, race, religion, culture and even nationality. One will be able to find individuals whose thinking and behavior differ greatly from their own. So if every individual is not the same as every other individual, this makes every person different in their own unique way. This is not to say that it is impossible to find within the university someone who thinks the same as you, or who behaves in a similar manner as your own; rather it is saying that you are likely to find within the university someone or the other who will not have the same kind of opinions as yours and whose practices will differ from yours. This now creates the idea of identity. Identity is a status of being oneself, being who you are. It is the state of being unique, but it can also be the state of belonging, such as belonging to a particular nationality or culture.
Identity politics is as a result of unity of some specific subgroups to enhance political and social change. Identity politics is not only limited to racial and gender diversities, but also to sexual orientation, citizenship status, ethnicity and other marginalized groups in the society. Considering a University setting where there are students from different cultural backgrounds, identity politics are inevitable. The success of marginalized groups in campus has led to empowered other subgroups through political identity. Identity politics can influence interactions in the university both positively and negatively. On the positive note, each subgroup feels like the have equal rights with the others. They know that they are different from the rest, but feel that their difference can positively be incorporated in the society. This encourages participation of all subgroups in one common activity. On the negative note, identity politics can cause a major division between members of different subgroups.
Neo-liberalism is a termed used to express the hypothetical approach to the study of an institution. Neo-liberalism seeks to show that international collaboration is achievable. Although there is lacks sovereignty at the international level creating opportunities for conflict liberals insist that institutions cooperate in order to decrease uncertainty. Although the students at the university are from different countries and from different cultural backgrounds, the institution has devised a way of bringing together the diversities for the harmonious co-existence of students and their educators.
However, liberalism and identity politics have not been counterbalanced. Instead of bringing together different student in the university for a harmonious existence, identity politics has further marginalized other minority groups. Liberalism alternatively, has not been successfully implemented in the university. Liberalism states that all the students will have equal rights and freedom despite their differences in race, culture, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation. However, marginalization of people in accordance to their differences is a common occurrence at the university. Students from “superior” groups are given special privileges as compared to other students belonging to marginalized groups.
Liberalism is assumes that an individual is autonomous presuming that each person has interests that are different from those of other people. The aim of liberalism is not to promote individualism and alienate people depending on their identity. Liberalism aims to provide a social condition I which people can freely interact. Conversely, multiculturism aims to acknowledge the diversity and importance of culture so as to exercise individual rights and protection of interests of many groups that are alike. Many multicultural educators are concerned that multicultural education for students at the university will not have the intended results which are to wipe out discrimination among students and the society as a whole. Learning about diverse cultures is meant to make the students find a source of identity at the same time appreciating other cultures. However, in most cases this is not the outcome of the studies because the learning of this culture may give room for marginalization and divisions between students of different cultures. For diversity to prevail, tolerance has to be practiced by every individual. The tolerance of things one does not appreciate about a culture that is different from theirs will create harmony in a society where different cultures are found.
Identity is an important aspect of ones life for understanding oneself and also for one to feel that they belong to something. When individuals are in a social situation, they have to assume different faces and roles in relating to the different people in the society. Basing this in the university where people have different identities and personalities, an individual might loose their identity in trying to fit into different social groups. When an individual attempts to present themselves to a society filled with people from diverse backgrounds, their presentation might be misinterpreted which is something the individual has no control over. In order to avoid such cases, individuals try to refrain from presenting themselves in a social setting to avoid these misinterpretations. This is the reason why, some students at the university are termed as ant-social just because the do not know how to present themselves to different people.
Self awareness gives the chance for individuals to have a sense of who they are in relation to their cultures and society. By altering of ones insight of self in response to the society, people are able to construct their own identity. During social interactions, people present themselves while simultaneously taking note of presentations made by others. Depending on one’s character, an individual has the ability to adjust their presentations in accordance to the presentations and response of those close to them. Essentially, social interaction involves a negotiation between individuals in a specific social context conveying aspects of their identity. This negotiation occurs unconsciously where people comfortably interact with others giving specific information and at the same time assessing the information they receive.
So as to socially fit in a group of many people, one needs to tolerate the identity of others. It is definite that all people will not like a particular identity because people are diverse in the thinking so it is important to tolerate other people’s identities bearing in mind that others are tolerating you identity. After reading the class notes and lectures, it has come to my attention that more often people misjudge others presentations of identity because of the way they present themselves. It is easier for one t tolerate others than to receive tolerance. Tolerance is an important aspect when dealing with a society with diverse cultures because it avoids discrimination (c.l). Tolerance brings out equality between different groups and allows one to fit in a group that is not their preference. In order for an individual to present themselves in a social setting that has people of diverse cultures, then they have to consider that these people are different and their presentation should also be different for each individual in order to convey the desired message. However, presentations of an individual in a private setting differ from that of a public setting. In a private setting, individuals tend to display their actual personalities because they are not afraid that anyone would judge them. This is when the true character of an individual can be discovered. Therefore, an individual is able to create different presentations when in a private or in a public setting. The capability of altering the mind of an individual is a process that is mostly unconscious and does not necessitate any effort.
When in a social setting, people feel that they require to conform to a certain social norm that leads to changes in behavior. People will adjust their own behavior for fear of rejection, social sanctions or disapproval. Social pressures are present in all types of social relations affecting both the behavior of the group and the values of each individual. Simultaneously, the pressure of different individuals to conform to a crowd has increased significantly. The assertion of one’s individualism or identity, one is considered to be no longer part of that crowd. As much as interaction in a social setting is encouraged, the negative implications are also unavoidable. An individual in the effort to conform to a certain group will definitely loose their identity.
Violence in schools can be described as both physical and physiological. Physical violence is easily controllable unlike physiological violence that in most cases goes without punishment. Those who go scot-free for this type of violence in most cases are not willing to conform to changes of the current status of the environment. This kind of violence is not only threatening to the individual’s overall performance but also affects the interaction between students in school. Safety on the other hand is a concept derived from protection that one receives from belonging to a certain group in school. When an individual identifies with a certain group of people, they feel the need to protect the needs of that group at the same time fighting the interests of other groups. However, safety can lead to occurrence of violence. The need to protect one group might lead to increase of violence in another group (c.d).
Conclusively, liberalism and tolerance determine the interaction of students both in the classroom and in other places in campus. Within the university, there are different groups of people with diverse cultural backgrounds. In such a social place, individuals present themselves in different ways to different people. Moreover, for harmony in the society to be achieved, an individual needs to tolerate the identity of others bearing in mind that their identity is being tolerated by others. However, this kind of change from one presentation to another might affect the identity of an individual in their effort to conform to the norms of the society.

Tokyo Story and Train Man
Introduction
Advances in technology have made it possible for people across the globe to explore the different behavior and lifestyle of the varied societies in the world. Such initiative has been facilitated through a myriad of ways particularly through movie production. To begin with, movies have been used by various producers or directors to convey different messages to the audience. These messages may be of love as displayed in romantic movies or other themes including tragedy, pain, general lifestyle among others as encompassed in various dramas. The two movies of Tokyo story and Train man depict different scenes of lifestyle in the modern Tokyo. The former is a drama that revolves around an old family residing in the local village with children both in Tokyo and Osaka. The parents Shukichi and Tommi set for the two aforementioned towns of Japan to visit their children only to be disappointed when their children are not able to spare time for them. They are however attended to by their daughter- in-law instead (Ebert, 2003, 2). This drama explores how to deal with disappointments since the emotions of the ordinary men are expressed in the context of the modern families as exhibited in their children in Tokyo and Osaka. On the other hand, Train man is a romantic movie revolving around a geeky man who gains confidence to approach a woman after long period of loneliness. This is made possible after rescuing the lady from a drunken passenger and receiving gift from the lady. He goes ahead to seek support from the online friends to win the love of the beautiful woman which he succeeds in doing ((McMillin, 2009, 1). This comedy portrays the modernity as witnessed in the communication mode between the loved ones.
Both the movies depict the changes that have so far been witnessed and continue to occur in Tokyo. At the outset, Train man is a modern romantic comedy directed in 2005 by Masanori Murakami that revolves around a shy geek man by the names of Takayuki Yamada who has not been able to get a girlfriend for a long time due to his shyness. He however, manages to win the love of a beautiful lady after defending her from the drunken passenger in a train. Yamada pursues the love of the beautiful lady (Miki Nakatani) after the woman sent him gift of appreciation ( HYPERLINK “http://comments.blogs.amctv.com/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&blog_id=271&id=80479” Willmott, 2007, 2). The modernity of this movie is displayed by the modern technology in communication adopted by the characters in the comedy. For instance, Yamada’s friends are mainly online guys whom he has not seen but provide help to the shy geek including assisting him pursue the love of the aforementioned lady. Through internet, Yamada is able to confront Nakatani and win her love which was not possible before the advent of the technology. The comedy therefore portrays Tokyo as a contemporary society with a vision of becoming networked through the advent of internet. In such arrangement, the human socialization is highly reduced as individuals can communicate through internet and get their things achieved including winning girlfriends ( HYPERLINK “http://comments.blogs.amctv.com/mt/mt-cp.cgi?__mode=view&blog_id=271&id=80479” Willmott, 2007, 3).
On the other hand, Tokyo story is a1953 Japanese film directed by HYPERLINK “http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasujiro_Ozu” o “Yasujiro Ozu” Yasujiro Ozu that revolves around Hirayama family which resides in different places in Japan. The older couple who have been living at home sets for Tokyo and Osaka to visit their children and grandchildren. They are disappointed on arrival as they can not receive the treatment and time from their children who happens to be committed on work. Instead, they are attended by their daughter in law Noriko whose husband died in the world war two (Ebert, 2003, 3). Ozu does not force emotions on the audience but leaves it to flow. Here, the audience is able to realize that the couple is disappointed even though Ozu does not mention such a thing in the movie. The director manages to destroy the Japanese families by employing issues of work and modernization. He stresses the drift that has so far occurred in the Japanese families as the children no longer have time for their parents due to commitments especially in the workplace. The couple is sent to spa by their children due to their commitment at work. They don’t like the place but have to go since there is no alternative. The couple also complains about their children and life particularly Shukichi during his night visit to his village friends. However, Ozu manages to hide the feelings of the old couple throughout the film. He is fond of positioning people in twos and side by side. This is possibly meant to allow the listeners as well as viewers to get clear messages when the duo is conversing. The couple thereafter set for a return journey home through Osaka to visit one of their sons. On the way, the grandmother falls ill and the children have to attend to her after receiving telegram.
The movie reflects the different social classes of people as witnessed in the Hirayama family. The old couple including Shukichi and Tommi lives at home resting because no one is free to take them anywhere while their children spend their life in urban areas pursuing various activities including work. At the outset, Koichi, their oldest son is married to Fumiko with two sons and lives in Tokyo. He works as a doctor in the neighborhood clinic while his sister Shige runs a beauty salon in the same city. The daughter-in-law Noriko who was married to the couple’s middle son lives within the same territory and is an office worker. Finally, their youngest son Keizo works in the other Japanese city of Osaka (Ebert, 2003, 3). Ozu manages to draw a clear line between the aforementioned families and the social classes the different families are found given their lifestyles and professions. Train man also displays different social classes in the romantic comedy. Yamada is portrayed as a socially-inept otaku who falls in love with a beautiful lady referred to as Hermes. The shy geek undergoes certain degree of transformations to become a chic in an attempt to win the love of Nakatani which he does under the help of his online pals. Nakatani on the other hand is portrayed as an expensive lady given the expensive gifts she offers to Yamada as an appreciation for rescuing her from the drunkard passenger in a train (McMillin, 2009, 2).
The two movies display great variation in the changes in technologies between nineteen fifties and two thousands. To begin with, the two movies explore the use of train as a means of transport by the concerned individuals in the two films. Tokyo story for instance demonstrates how the old couple consisting of Shukichi and Tommi set for Tokyo and Osaka using train as a means of transport. However, they travel before the advent of a bullet train hence takes one day to reach their intended destination. Train man on the other hand employs the use of a modern train in the 2005- romantic comedy. Besides, the Tokyo story does employ a one on one communication as well as the use of telegram as witnessed during the death of Tommi on their journey back home. The train man on the other hand employs modern technology in the communication arena by utilizing internet communication among various characters. For instance, Yamada seeks advice on how to date Nakatani from his pals online. He has never seen these friends but manages to be helped online to win the love of the beautiful lady. Unlike the Tokyo stories which employ telegram as a means of communication, train man utilizes phone calls to deliver urgent messages. Yamada communicates to Nakatani on phone after gaining the courage to approach the chic. Moreover the advances in technology has enhanced human contact through the use of text messages as well as e-mails which are faster compared to the old and expensive modes of communication such as telegram.
In a nutshell the analysis of the two movies of Tokyo stories and Train man provides great variation in the lifestyles of people greatly influenced by different factors including the existing technologies especially in the communication and transport sectors. In Tokyo stories, Ozu addresses the inevitability of death, the rift between different generations, the anxiety about death as well as change and the passing of time among other important issues. He utilizes the most humanistic style unlike the workshop storytelling technique by touching the audience with human feelings. The Train man on the other hand is a romantic comedy that illustrates advances in technology as Yamada manages to win the love of Nakatani via the support of online friends as well as the use of modern communication methods including phone calls, text messaging as well as e-mails. The two movies utilizes train as a means of transport and the 1953-Tokyo stories utilizes the old train which would take one day to reach Tokyo from home upcountry. However, the two movies bring visions of development to the city of Tokyo as witnessed in the technological advancements.
Conclusion
Lifestyles of different people in Tokyo are affected by a variety of factors existing within the urban city. The scenes of the daily lives of the aforementioned people can therefore be depicted in romantic comedies as well as through drama. The two movies of Train man and Tokyo stories therefore portray such lifestyles by utilizing different styles under different time periods. Tokyo stories for instance, was directed by Ozu in 1953 when technological development was greatly minimized compared to Train man produced in 2005 thereby characterized by modern technology in the internet age. The former dram is however typified by the rift between generations as the old couple Shukichi and Tommi meet a cold reception by their children in Tokyo after traveling for both day and night via train to the capital. This is attributed to work and modernization that has kept the children so committed to even have time for their parents. The movie is also characterized by the backward technology as exemplified in the use of telegram as a means of communication during the death of Tommi. Train man on the other hand, revolves around a shy geek Yamada who gains confidence after receiving support from online friends to win the love of Nakatani. The romantic comedy is directed in the modern age where communication system is highly enhanced and such technologies as phone use; text messaging as well as e-mails is utilized. Generally, they display different scenarios concerning the daily lives of people in Tokyo.

A review of “The Global Banquet: Politics of Food” and Movie “Fresh” by Ana Sofia Joanes
The current global food system presents a troubling situation where people continually lack nutritious food substances and essential vitamins due to the advent of globalization which has replaced traditional organic farming with unhealthy industry made processed food. In an effort to fix these complex situations, people are enlightened with informative trainings through international conferences, films and documentaries to promote a sustained healthy eating culture in the society.
The movies “The Global Banquet: Politics of Food” and Sophia Joanes’ movie, “Fresh” are such documentary films that have sensitized people to reclaim the traditional farming methods to help fix the existing global food systems. Both movies feature important issues relating to food security, where the main idea is to create awareness on the need to make the right choices when buying food from the market. They also attempt to highlight the solutions they people can use to promote the production of sustained and healthier food in their communities
Sophia Joanes’ movie, “Fresh” is a documentary which highlights the right farming methods through two farmers, Joel Salatin, a self prescribed evangelist and an environmentalist farmer, who owns a polyface farm in Virginia and Will Allen who is an urban farmer who owns a three acre model farm in Milwaukee known as the “Growing Power”. This non profit farming organization demonstrates how a small piece of land can be used to carry out diversified forms of farming that produce healthy food to the community. Will Allen’s farms have a combination of fresh vegetables and herbs, poultry farms, goat pens, beehives as well as fishponds with about 1000 tilapia fish breed.
Using these two farmers, the movie director seeks to show individual members in the society that with combined efforts and absolute commitment from every one, we can achieve a proper healthy food system, which can lead to a healthier community. The movie shows the viewers about the cost incurring processes involved to produce healthier food which reflects in their prices making them seem to be a bit more expensive than the processed food
On the other hand, the movie “The Global Banquet: Politics of Food” is a resourceful documentary which exposes the damaging effects of global industrialization to the food systems in our societies today. It shows how individual groups such as students, church groups, environmentalists, animal right activists, laborers and farmers are coming together to collectively search for solutions to address the problem within the current food systems in an effort to adopt standard healthy living.
This movie is a two parts series in which the first part shows a farmer who claims that the challenges facing organic farmers in their society can be linked to the uncontrolled political, cultural, social and economic factors that have caused the modern society to abandon traditional farming methods and adopt the advanced technological changes. The second part of this movie addresses the impacts of these technological advancements on agriculture and seeks to search for different possible solutions that can be used to help eliminate the problems brought about by international globalization.
The common theme in the two movies is the need to provide people with insightful information about farming methods. This can help them choose organic farming over factory farming in an effort to promote healthy living through the production and supply of health food. The two movies reveal the shocking facts relating to how people have been entranced into taking chemical and processed foods.
In the two movies, people are cautioned against opting for the option of chemically processed food stuffs by highlighting the disadvantages of taking junk food. They clearly show that the cheap industrial food eventually becomes expensive in the long run due to the high cost one may incur to treat diseases that result from the damaging chemicals used to make them. In addition, the movies create a clear picture in the mind of the viewers by demonstrating how the industrialization process involved in factory farming, is implicated in environmental degradation.
Based on the numerous amounts of junk food stored in our groceries, it is evident that there are more market opportunities for industrialized chemically processed foods in comparison to organic products and this continues to negatively affect the food security in both the developed and developing world. This poses a major challenge to modern small scale farmers in various ways, as people prefer cheap industrialized junk food over farm produce, which leaves the farmers with no market access for their produce.
The increased globalization has continually degraded the environment where pollutants from destructive industrial emissions result in conditions that are unfavorable for farming. Damaged climatic conditions negatively affect natural subsistent farming and push farmers to engage in alternative expensive farming methods such as irrigation and green houses which impose heavy financial implications to farmers.
In an effort to promote a culture of organic farming and to encourage small scale farmers in our societies, both the “The Global Banquet: Politics of Food” and Sophia Joanes’ movie “Fresh” use persuasive techniques and appeal strategies to persuade members of the society to not only engage in correct farming methods around their areas, but also to support small scale farmers to get market for their produce, through buying fresh organic products from specified groceries.
