Play and Movie Response: Hamlet, Act III Scene IV: Analysis of the Movie

In Act III, scene IV of the 1996 movie, the use of costume, blocking and camera movement convey the transformation of each character in the scene on a course of events where escape is inexistent. The location is at Gertrude’s chamber and the characters in the play are Polonius, Gertrude, Hamlet and the King’s Ghost. In ‘The Closet’ Scene, after the ‘play within a play’, Gertrude confronts Hamlet while Polonius hides to uncover the reason behind his bizarre behavior. Hamlet then kills Polonius as he mistakes him for Claudius and further confronts her mother about her sinful behavior. The costumes used in the scene create a unique mindset of each character. Hamlet is dressed up in black attire which creates a sense of mourning and sorrow. Gertrude dresses up in a metallic low cut attire which signifies her lustful nature. Polonius on the other hand is in an official uniform indicative of his dedication and obsession with duty. Hamlet’s ghost is dressed in a cloak which presents a gentler figure thereby imploring Hamlet to stay on task. In order to clearly depict hurling accusations, the characters in this scene square off as accusations fly.

A contrasting and comparison nature in the scene is magnified where Hamlet charges his mother to compare the merits of her two husbands. The visitation of the ghost is only visible to Hamlet through the use of scene cuts and angles which communicate the presence of the ghost visually to Hamlet and not Gertrude. In addition, the forces outside the character’s view and control lead to unimagined outcomes. The quick cuts between Hamlet and his father increase the depth of emotional impact of the King’s death and the unwavering charge for revenge. Reconciliation is indicated by extreme close-ups at the end of the scene to reinforce the pact made between Hamlet and Gertrude.

Act III Scene IV: Analysis of the Play

The scene is known as the Closet scene. Hamlet confronts his mother Gertrude over her recent decisions. It begins with Polonius advising Gertrude to be direct with him during their confrontation and explains that he would stand behind the tapestry so as to listen to their conversation. He hides just before Hamlet enters and their confrontation starts. From the tone of Hamlet’s confrontation, a feeling of him not wanting to Gertrude to be his mother is vivid. Gertrude calls for Polonius to help him and Hamlet kills him thinking he was Claudius. Their confrontation continues with Hamlet blaming his mother for her unforgivable actions. Gertrude, through Hamlet’s discussion and disclosure feels guilty, and realizes the impact her behavior had on her son. Claudius ghost then appears and Hamlets tells Gertrude about his father’s feelings however sarcasm is seen as Hamlet takes a judgmental role on Gertrude’s behavior. Hamlet advises her to throw away the bad part in her heart. The scene ends with Hamlet confessing to Gertrude that he never trusted Polonius. He leaves while pulling Polonius’ body. Hamlet’s relationship with women is evident in this scene as he is still suspicious of her mother creating an impression of him not trusting women.

From the analysis of both the play and the movie, it can be concluded that the actions in both, the emotional background, the pivotal role, the setting and the costume were effectively tackled. A considerable identity in both is the atmosphere surrounding Gertrude and Hamlet during their confrontation, the anger of Hamlet is clearly seen. Gertrude’s guilt and exhaustion is also visible in her frail words and her posture in the movie. The movie captured all this and brought out a complete manifestation of the events unfolding in the play. These presented the movie as an option for a clear understanding of Shakespeare’s written work.

What surprises me in the film is the fact that the characters were able to infuse their traits as displayed in the plot of the play. Most of the words in the play if not all are imported in the movie. The movement in the play, the cut scene, the emotion, the costume choice, the diversity of the setting and the characters created a magnificent synergy which conveyed the ultimate message in the play. There is also frequent use of flashback on scenes mostly described in the play but not performed within the text, such as Hamlet’s childhood friendship with Yorick.

Overall, Branagh’s production mirrors a close interpretation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece through his execution of character development, transposition of the Victorian setting, the ‘raw’ language use and a cast that took up its role perfectly.

Plant Strategies

Introduction

When making decisions to open, expand or close plants, firms must come up with strategies in order shape their present decisions and the strategies they will use in future.

Firm Strategies in Future

For a firm to open a new plant, they have to do an analysis and determine the plant performance for over ten years. Thus, if they open or expand plant they must come up with strategies that will focus on improving the new plant performance before coming up with other plants (Tomiura, 2003).

In future, the strategies must be developed based on the successes and weaknesses of the new plant that the firm comes up with. If a firm decides to close a plant, this decision will affect the future strategies of the plant. The firm may decide to close a plant in order to open a new plant in another area that has a greater possibility for the plant’s business to flourish. Thus, in future the firm’s strategies must include opening new plants or expanding the existing ones.

Flexibility of Plant Capacities

In comparison to other decision variables that the simulation allows, a firm can be remarkably flexible with plant capacity. Elevated the plant competences lower the suppleness of a plant. Thus, Firms with plants that have low production capacities are highly flexible. Consequently for a firm to be flexible, other variables are not significant determinants compared to the capacity of a firm (Tomiura, 2003).

The decisions on plant flexibility based on a plant capacity, has a significant impact on the firm’s strategy choice in the future. The decision largely influences the firms’ ability to open, expand, or close down a plant.

If a firm decides to have a plant with an exceptionally high production capacity, this decision is likely to impact of the decisions in future strategies. For instance, the firm will not be able to close or expand the plant easily. If a firm decides to have a plant with low production capacity, in the future they can easily expand or close the plant depending on the firm’s demands.

Acquisition of celebrities in Branded Market

Decisions made by a firm determine whether they successfully or unsuccessfully bid on celebrities. If a firm decides to acquire celebrities, this decision limits the firm’s strategic choices in the branded market in the future (Private Label in the U.S. –, 2011).

The firm’s performance will largely depend on the popularity of the celebrities. Thus in their future strategies the firm must put in plans to make sure that celebrities remain popular. On the other hand, they must also come up with a strategy to keep their brands successful even if the celebrities have poor performances and lose their popularity. If a firm does not acquire celebrities, its performance will be stable, minimizing the apparent turbulence caused by the wavering popularity that many celebrities face and its backlash on the endorsing firm.

It is possible for a firm to have few or many celebrities. This will depend on the number of branded products that they have. Many celebrities can be acquired by a firm that wants to create a brand or new collection for each one of them. However, a firm can decide to have a few celebrities if they want to have a few brands with many items instead of having many brands.

Pit Bulls Misunderstood Breed

Introduction

Currently, there is an ongoing debate concerning the dangerous nature of pit bulls, as well as their impact on society. This paper seeks to give a critical analysis concerning why pit bulls are viewed in a negative manner, and what should be done to reverse this notion among people. If this issue is not addressed, there might be no more pit bulls left. Pit bulls are certain breeds of dogs, and found mostly in America. It is a breed that has brought a lot of debate, as well as controversy. The controversy is majorly brought in regard to it being kept as a pet. The pit bull has been widely prohibited in numerous American states. The pit bull has been portrayed negatively for many years, in areas where they exist mostly, that is, the United Kingdom and the United States. The negative depiction of the pit bull is mainly through the attacks that it has been involved in against owners and the general public. The fatalities that have been caused by the pit bull against humans according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention are many. From the year 1979, until 1998 report indicated that the pit bull was involved in the fatalities for 66 of 238 people in that duration within the United States (D’Avino, 2010.1).

Background

The origin of the pit bull was as a result of the cross-breeding between the pit bull and the bull dog. The terriers were known to love playing, and thus embracing games, while the bull dog is known for its athletic nature and incredible strength. The main purpose of the cross-breeding was to have an offspring that exhibited the characteristics of strength, athleticism and playfulness. The introduction of the pit bull in the United States from the United Kingdom in the 1870s was mainly for the purpose of companion, hunting and security. During this time, when animals were mainly being involved in ring fighting, the pit bull was seen as being quite strong. In 1898, the pit bull was registered under the United Kennel Club whose chairman C. Bennet registered his owned pit bull, and named it American pit bull terrier (American Pit Bull Registry, 2012.1).

The pit bull later on, became a key symbol of loyalty to groups and organizations, such as the Buster Brown, Little Rascals, and even the RCA recording company (Morral, 2012.1). It also portrayed a sense of dependability as well as sturdiness. With time, the pit bull was spotted by United States law enforcers, who resorted to train the pit bulls to be used as police dogs and used to search for criminals hidden in various places. The pit bull is also used in several places such as medical research centers, for therapy purposes. Ranch owners also adopt the pit bull as farm dogs, and are able to provide security against intruders.

The United Kennel Club made the place where pit bull owners came to register their dogs. There existed a lot of financial obstacles that made many people fail to register their pit bulls because it required a lot of money to register a pit bull. As a result, of the failure to register the pit bulls, the total population of the pit bulls has become difficult to determine. On a more positive aspect when World War I commenced in 1914, the pit bull was widely used in the war as the canine mascot especially in America (American Pit Bull Registry, 2012.1). The famous pit bull Sergeant Stubby of 1917 was applauded for saving the lives of numerous American soldiers in France, and even solely capturing a German soldier believed to be spying the American marines (Morral, 2012.1).

Critical Analysis of why pit bull is a misunderstood breed

The main reasons why the pit bull breed has been portrayed negatively in the media and other platforms is mainly due its aggressive nature. The American pit bull terrier breed is widely reported for attacking humans, causing serious injuries, trauma and ultimately death. The aggression of the pit bull terrier is mainly the cause why the FBI and the CIA have reported that it is widely used in the guarding of illegal trade such smuggling and narcotics. It has been widely reported that the pit bull is widely used in facilitating attacks against police officers in operations against crime. The attacks have made numerous states ban the ownership of the pit bull in its jurisdiction. There are over 650 cities in numerous states that have restricted keeping of the pit bull. The states, including Denver, Florida, Miami, and Colorado, which have restricted, pit bulls from ownership (DogsBite.org Some Dogs Don’t Let Go, 2011.1). This position is extremely impractical because one cannot change the nature of pit bulls. They are naturally aggressive, and thus should only be owned by people who will not make them become aggressive. Furthermore, the ban is encouraged because it will reduce the number of people who own the pit bulls. In turn, only law enforcement agencies should have the mandate to own pit bulls.

The owners of the pit bulls being kept across the country are to blame for the fatalities linked to the attacks. Research has indicated that the pit bull breed can become docile, just like other dog breeds, but the owners are to blame for the aggression. The pit bull is used by thugs and amateur gangs, who are trying to intimidate the public as well the authorities. Many owners of pit bulls are blamed for having ill motives, as far as the adoption of the pit bull is concerned. It is also said that a well bred and properly reared pit bull is quite docile, and it will not attack strangers. The maltreatment of the dog accompanied by being used to violent environments makes it aggressive according to the Los Angeles’ Villalobos Rescue Centre owner Tia Maria Torres. The rescue center is used as an orphanage for pit bulls (Coile, 2001. 32).

It has been a norm that the pit bull causes serious injuries to people, for the owners to blame the nature and the immediate environment. The pit bulls are trained to attack by being exposed to violent environment and even in various occasions being beaten to raise their anger, due to their genetically aggressive characteristics. The owners are blamed for not letting the dog stay in its fixed premises, but also letting them roam free and unsupervised increasing the potential for a dangerous situation. This position is extremely practical as people are the ones to blame for the attacks on people by pit bulls. Owners usually train their pit bull to be aggressive, while others even neglect them. In turn, the pit bulls attack people as it has no control over its behavior. This is why one can claim that most times people tend to misunderstand the behavior of pit bulls.

The 2011 dog bite statistics show that out of 31 dog bites in the United States, 22 dog bites were caused by the pit bulls. This is close to 71% of the total dog bites, despite the low number of the pit bulls in the country that amounts to only 5%. The population of the pit bulls shows that almost 80% of the pit bulls caused injuries to the population. Statistics from 2005 showed that pit bulls have killed almost 127 American citizens, the highest, as compared to the Rottweiler and other breeds (DogsBite.org Some Dogs Don’t Let Go, 2011.1).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the pit bull is portrayed negatively, and this should not be the case. The attacks against human beings are mainly a direct result of the owner’s irresponsibility and human aggression, and people view them negatively. The aggression and injuries caused by the pit bull are mainly blamed on its irresponsible owners, who are known to encourage the aggressive nature of the pit bull. Unfortunately, the actions from these owners or lack of education of current owners have caused the saddening statistical data for 71% of the dog bites in 2011, which were mainly caused by the pit bulls in the United States (DogsBite.org Some Dogs Don’t Let Go, 2011.1). I concur with the mentioned position as it gives a more practical solution as compared to the others. It is a known fact that dogs behave similar to how their owners act towards them. In this case, most owners tend to teach their pit bulls to be aggressive and fierce. Indeed, pit bulls should not be blamed for their behavior because it is human beings that have made them that way.
