Progressivism in Education

Introduction

When well defined, progressivism is a shared name used in historiography to describe prehistoric levels in which specific means to contemplate development are noticeable. The main characteristics and theory of progressivism are written in this paper. This paper deliberates numerous aspects of progressivism in the following context: role of school, goals of learning and education, the choice of educational contents, type of knowledge and, perceptions on learning and instruction, in addition to the position of students and teachers in the educational process. This research paper’s starting point on progressive education is the analysis of its ideological, psychological, and philosophical foundations. Progressivism typically turned out to be common due to the work of John Dewey (1897). His conviction was in the knowledge that learners had and the reality that children will learn well by going through the idea first hand.

In this paper, the aim is to analyze the theory of progressivism and highlight its functional features by describing the work of schools that have mainly accepted the progressive concepts from the first half of the twentieth century with the aim of their additional development. John Dewey believed that learners must try and fail in order to learn and develop understandings about the universe around them (Stone, 2020). This paper, on the other hand, shows the application of progressive ideas in practice in modern education. Cooperative learning open schools, experiential learning, multi-generation grouping, numerous programs of alternative schools, and schools without grades are the instances of infiltration of progressive concepts in present-day educational practice. Progressivism is about failing to succeed while hating and loving the emotions that follow.

Concepts of Progressivism

Progressive learning is a reaction to traditional ways of education. It can be well explained as a learning program that offers more value to knowledge than official learning. This method of learning is centered further on empirical education that focuses on the growth of a child’s talents (Flanagan, 2016). Progressive education is important since teachers do more than memorizing facts. Normally, experimental learning is well thought-out to be the greatest way for students to deal with real-life situations. In Progressivism, Progressivists believe that education should. Progressive education also develops students’ social skills, cooperation, imagination, critical thinking, and independence center on the whole youngster, slightly than on the teacher or the content.

Progressivists also believe that individuals study well from the things they deliberate most relevant to our life. The education idea philosophy focuses that learners’ ought to test ideas through active investigation. Learning is grounded in the queries of student’s that arise through experiencing the world. Educators ought to plan classes that arouse curiosity and push the learners to a higher level of understanding. In addition to reading textbooks, learners must learn by action. Learners should every so often leave the classroom for field trips during which they work together with society and nature. The curriculum should be centered on experiences, abilities, and interests.

Progressivisms Educational Beliefs

Another name for Progressivisms is constructivism. It has three main basic areas of focus: social justice, child-centered teaching, and egalitarianism. The students are persuaded to come up with their personal views of the world and choose what their principles will be. Each learner should create an individual identity rather than a teacher creating one for the class and transmitting it to the group as a whole. The learners need to understand themselves and their personal identity so that they develop a system of values for themselves and learn to respect others’.

The egalitarianism feature of progressivism centers on hatred of any competition between the students. There is no yearning to have grouping, ranking, or division within the group. This division comprises four standardized testing, the embodiment of the modern learning system in the United States. Child-focused studying inspires the students to put into practice their personal, creative styles, thinking, and higher-level capabilities to solve issues in innovative tactics, even though it is in a manner that the educator had not intended. On the other hand, social justice is making sure that all learners learn to respect all students’ values and rights, including those who are somehow different from their own.

Progressivism should be functioning, to some point, in the education of America’s youth. In an analytical report, a researcher asked a certain University to be allowed to participate in every area of the admission process to see if it is at least as demanding and selective as it has been at other times in history. After some research, this involved attending meetings and reading applications. The researcher learned that competition s stiffer now than ever before in history. The Progressive movement’s main goals were tackling problems triggered by industrialization, development, immigration, and political corruption. The progressives’ major objectives were to support the principles of morality, economic reform, competence, and social wellbeing. The Progressives had many different methods and ideas on how to solve social problems (Flanagan, 2016). Students and children do more than memorize particulars in a progressivism institute. Other times, empirical studying is well thought-out to be an excellent method for youngsters to deal with real-life circumstances. Progressivism education additionally develops students’ creativity, social skills, independence, critical thinking, and team. For a kindergartener, egalitarianism is a method for a child to enter the educational system with no biased views about his or her ability to absorb learning. There are no judgments centered on socio-economic status, race, or prior knowledge. Liveliness can be grounded on the learning course and the excitement of what learning can give to the child. Imagination, exploration, and learning new skills are what are vital. Characteristics of the progressive period consist of a focus on family and education, prohibition, purification of the government, women’s suffrage, and modernization. The main objectives of the progressivisms were to come up with the ideas of economic reform, morality, social welfare, and efficiency. The progressivisms had various diverse ways and concepts on how to sort out social problems.

Conclusion

Progressivism is essential in education. Individuality, change, and progress are essential to someone’s learning. Progressivists believe that individuals learn well away from something they contemplate most important to their lives (Tröhler, 2017). They focus their curriculum on the abilities, needs, involvements, welfares of students. Centered on the knowledge of advancement in which developments in and social organization, technology, and economic growth are essential to the development of the human condition, progressivism became very important during the period of enlightenment in Europe, out of the conviction that Europe was showing that societies.

Introduction

Emergency medical services are services offered when emergencies occur, for example when a fire breaks out; the casualties receive emergency medical services. Another example is when a car crash occurs and there are casualties, they receive emergency medical services, also in the case of floods, similar medical services are offered. These are medical services that are offered in quick response to an accident. However, casualties at an accident scene have the right to either accept or refuse emergency medical services (Upson & Notarianni 2010). The medical practitioner attending to them has to fully inform the patient on their medical condition and the casualty can either accept or refuse the treatment. This paper will highlight the future of such medical services, considering the current legal reforms in the health sector mainly in the emergency medical services part.

The future of EMS

There are few assumptions that have to be made before considering the future of EMS; they include

Emergency medical services provide a common point for Public health, Public safety and public care systems. The principles used in these aspects are similar to those used in EMS.

The general public is hopeful that EMS will be offered in future. Communities have embraced EMS and handle this as a resource that should continue existing.

Emergency medical services have been offered to all people from different communities. The public expects that the diversity of EMS will continue.

Emergency medical services will continue to be an important part of the national health care system. It is expected that we will be a leading example in the world by integrating emergency medical services to the national health care services.

National policy makers will be keen to understand how emergency medical services work. It is important for them to understand how this health care scheme works so that they can assist in the funding process (Upson & Notarianni 2010).

The future in Emergency Medical Services;

Funds from the federal government have been decreasing are expected to continue decreasing. The federal government is expected to reduce the resources it allocates to Emergency Medical services in the future. The government aims at making the system self sufficient, in such a way that the patients who benefit from these medical services are able to finance the whole health care system (Upson & Notarianni 2010). This only applies to EMS services offered by public health institutions.

The health care sector in collaboration with the government is expected to conduct public awareness program. At this time, it is still not clear to many people how the EMS scheme will influence patients results for patients with different medical conditions. Some people are also not aware how the entire community benefits from Emergency Medical services. Public policy makers also fall into the category of those who should receive the public awareness program. This will enable them come up with policies that are effective in the sector. It is important for policy makers to fully understand the EMS systems.

There is expected increase in the use of information technology in sending alerts and getting response in the EMS systems. The future holds quicker methods of sending emergency alerts and receiving response and feedback. A person in an emergency situation can send the emergency alert as a short text message to the EMS service providers and receive quick feedback. It is also possible to stream videos of the accident scene at the Call center and the situation can be assessed before medical professionals are sent to respond to the situation. All this is possible through applications that are being developed. The apps will work both online and offline.

The use of information technology in providing better public health care also goes on in the provision of EMS. The future holds use of CCTV cameras on roads and social amenities to relay information to the service providers. This facilitates quicker response to emergency situations. The call centers do not have to wait for a call to reach out to an emergency situation. Alerts are sent to the call center through artificial intelligence. This program will be implemented in several steps, first a test program has to be implemented. Once its success is evaluated, it can be evaluated in other areas and centers.

Advancement of emergency medical services as a profession, this has already started happening with an increase in the number of schools that offer EMS as a course. EMS now and in future will be a course with can be pursued in different institutions of higher learning (Englart & Casolino 2002). Students will have the chance to specialize in this field in health care services. This provides room for more research to take place and developments in offering emergency health services. The studies available range from ambulance services to quick paramedic and first aid services.

Due to the prevailing fuel crisis, the provision of emergency medical services is expected to be a costly affair. For this reason, charges to patients will be higher as the service providers will be incurring higher costs of operation. Service providers are also expected to change the type of cars they use in accessing emergency situations. The 8 dollar diesel increase is expected to have severe effects on the provision of emergency medical service. The expected response is to change from normal ambulances to sprinter ambulances. This are fuel efficient ambulances which can run on lower costs and serve the same purpose.

In future, EMS service providers aim at providing wholesome health service. Currently, emergency medical service providers do not offer follow up services on medical situation. For example, after serving a patient the service providers do not follow up on the healing process of the patient (Englart & Casolino 2002). A change in this type of service is important so that a follow up on the health situation of the patient is offered. It is important for health care service providers to keep patients records and offered follow up services to ensure that the same problem does not occur constantly. A health problem is dealt with once and for all.

Health care providers aim at providing integrated health care services in cooperation with other health care providers. This goes from medical physicians to public safety agencies and health care service provider’s networks (Emergency medical services 2009). The process of linking together all the above organizations is important in order to have a database for all patients and a quicker response system. An alert received at one location can be responded to by another organization. There will be harmony in operations of both organizations. This will also ensure that patients receive the expected follow up on all health care provided to them by EMS service providers.

The legislation and regulations created to govern the EMS sector are also expected to change in the future (Emergency medical services 2009). With the cooperation of the law makers, such as the special licensing of EMS ambulances and air craft’s so that they can reach out to people in need at faster than ever, the creation of an agency that governs the entire EMS sector. The agency will play as the intermediary between the service providers and the law makers. A system of fund collection into a pool will also be a factor of consideration as funds from the federal government are reducing.

In Conclusion

Emergency medical services serve a very important part in public health care provision. Its future seems brighter as the services are brought closer to the people in aims to convert it to a community based project. When the community embraces this as their project they will be able to trust it and use it as a system for health care provision (Emergency medical services 2009). Every organization is integrating information technology to its functioning; EMS service providers are also doing this. It is important to use information technology for quicker relaying of information and response to emergency situations. The current economic situation is expected to change EMS services in the future, due to the high operating costs, the patients will also have to pay extra for the EMS services.

The Future of Economics is not Bright at All with The Rise of Inventions, Such as Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Over the years as a society, we have managed to evolve our values, norms, and languages. However, one thing that has remained the same is our fear of machines. At the same time, while it may seem unlikely for one not to fathom the idea of the digital revolution in this era, there is a need for each one of us to be concerned with their impacts. Currently, the world is bracing for the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has not only raved havoc in almost everyone’s life but also, everyone has to live with the reality that it is going to be with us for a long time just like HIV. If this was not enough, you should also brace yourselves for the impacts of inventions in our economic future. This is a blog piece, and it is aimed at informing the public on what are some of the impacts of the current inventions such as robotics and artificial intelligence on the world’s economy.

Machine translation, google assistant, image, and speech recognition are just some of the AI technologies that have been developed over the years. Artificial intelligence in many electronic devices has been progressing gradually, and the same applies to robotics in the field of medicine and manufacturing. The number of machines being developed every day is a threat to the number of job opportunities already available. Considering the fact that many countries are currently facing the epidemic of unemployment, this creates a considerable risk for disaster (Susskind, 2020). Now, the unemployment rate in the U.S stands at 14.7%, although the country is highly developed (Lambert, 2020). These show that the risk of unemployment is not immune to developed countries

On the other hand, in a continent such as Africa, whose 75% of its population are youth, in some of its countries, the unemployment rate is more than 25% (Ighobor, 2017). Also, in other regions, employment growth does not paint a rosy picture. For example, a country like India has posted a decline in employment growth throughout three consecutive five-year gaps. They posted a decrease of 4% to 0.2% According to a forecast by Bruegel; their prediction showed that the European Union is likely to face a 54% loss of jobs with the rise of computerization in the next twenty years (European Union, 2019). Loss of employment leads to a decrease in citizens’ standards of living, and this may have a direct or indirect impact on the economy.

In terms of direct impact, it refers to the reduction in consumer demand on products and services offered by various companies. While robotics and AI are likely to increase the quality of goods and services being offered in the market, the irony is that there is a risk of loss of demand due to their existence (Mitra, 2018). When one becomes unemployed, he or she has less amount of disposable income, which means he or she would have to cut down on some spending. This budget cuts, in turn, affect these companies since profit margins would decrease, and this may bankrupt certain companies while at the same time, reducing the amount of taxes that governments earn. On the same note, a lack of disposable income would make individuals cut spending on luxurious services such as travel, and this would have a significant impact on tourism. Given that most African countries’ primary source of income is tourism, this would have a toll on their economies.

Also, digitization may lead to the need for reskilling, which might have a significant impact on the economy (European Union, 2019). The use of artificial intelligence and robots do replace people’s jobs, and this means that they would have to seek other employment. Well, the reality is these other jobs would likely be those that machines would not be able to do, and this may require people to learn new skills. Moreover, these inventions would have an impact on income distribution, which would, in turn, lead to income inequality. Most companies would have to favor employing employees who know about controlling these machines, and this would force them to demand high payments (European Union, 2019). On the other hand, those with no much knowledge would be paid poorly. Given that the number of the latter employees would be higher compared with the former, there would be a high-income inequality in society. Given that most countries are trying hard to cut down income inequalities to improve their economies, this would prove to be a significant impediment.

While most economists do feel that these inventions are unlikely to replace all our jobs, for instance, in sectors that require sensor motor skills, it would be a lie not to acknowledge that a huge percentage of us do not work in the given field. Therefore, countries should brace themselves for the disruptive effects of these inventions in their economies by taking precautions and, for example, adopting policies that would manage their impacts.
