The importance of health cannot be gainsaid as far as the growth and development of an individual is concerned. Indeed, the health of an individual has a bearing on other aspects of his life including the economic aspect especially considering that it determines the ability of an individual to undertake productive activities. However, recent times have seen an increase in the number and types of diseases from which individuals suffer. Indeed, the prevalence of some of these fatal ailments has been worrying, to the extent of triggering a flurry of research activities to determine their causes, risk factors, ways of preventing them and especially the appropriate cures for the ailments (Edlin & Golanty, 2010). These ailments include heart attacks, stroke, cancer and even lower respiratory diseases. While there are varied similarities between these ailments, the key or most fundamental similarity revolves around the fact that all of them have unhealthy lifestyles as a risk factor. In essence, individuals can make specific changes in their lifestyles to prevent the occurrence of these ailments.

First, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight would be imperative. The maintenance of a healthy weight lowers the risk for varied categories of cancer including prostate, breast, kidney, colon and lung cancer (Kumar & Kumar, 2003). Physical activity goes a long way in burning calories and eliminating the fat that may be constricting arteries, thereby reducing the possibility of heart attacks, respiratory diseases and even stroke. In the course physical activities, individuals would sweat and consume immense amounts of water, which would clear the body system, thereby lowering the threat of cancer (Edlin & Golanty, 2010).

In addition, it is imperative that individuals maintain a healthy diet. Researchers have underlined the fact that these diseases have become more prevalent as a result of the increased use of fast foods. The busy lifestyles that individuals live have left them with little or no time to prepare healthy meals. In essence, they have taken to the consumption of unhealthy fast foods, which are rich in fats and have low fiber content (Kumar & Kumar, 2003). Nevertheless, individuals can consume healthy diets, primarily composed of lots of vegetables and fruits, as well as whole grains, while also limiting fat. In the prevention of cancer, limiting red and processed meet would be imperative as they contain carcinogens that increase the possibility of cancer.

In addition, limiting alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking would go a long way in preventing the occurrence of these ailments (Kumar & Kumar, 2003). Limit and tobacco is known to cause immense damage to the cells and an individual’s DNA thereby increasing the risk of contracting cancer. On the same note, it has been associated with increased respiratory problems especially considering its effects on the lungs (Edlin & Golanty, 2010). Indeed, cigarette smoking has also been associated with increased risk of heart disease, especially coronary heart ailments. In essence, quitting smoking would prevent the occurrence of heart diseases.

Lastly, it is imperative that an individual always goes for medical checkups even in instances where he or she feels healthy. In most cases, ailments will be present in the body but yet to manifest themselves fully (Edlin & Golanty, 2010). Some of the ailments can be arrested at the early stages when they manifest themselves in form of other less-serious ailments. Going for checkups would allow the physician to provide tips on how they can keep their health in check.

Unionized Facility in Nursing

Pros for a Unionized Facility

Benefits and wages: Unionization in nursing normally leads to increase in benefits and wages in the workplace. This should consequently lead to increase or improvement in the quality of life since workers have increased disposable income to dedicate to their leisure activities (Lampert, 2013). Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 93% of employees are able to access retirement benefits compared to 64% of non-union counterparts.

Job security: According to Keller (2012),non-union workers are normally hired “at will”, implying that they can be fired at any time for no reason, although an employer can not just fire a worker for discrimination based on religion, age, race, and the like. However, for a unionized facility, a worker can not just be terminated without proper reason; the worker has to go through grievance procedures and even arbitration.

Strength in numbers: A unionized facility makes workers have power as one cohesive group than when acting individually. According to Helen (2012), the muscle of a collective action makes workers gain what they desire in the work place. Collective bargaining enables employees negotiate wages, safety issues, health, and working conditions through their unions.

Cons for a Unionized Facility

Initiation fees and union dues: The dues may range from $300 to hundreds of dollars per year, thus offsetting higher wages. According to Lampert (2013), dues enables the union conduct union businesses and pay for official’s salaries, but most the times the members complain about the paid amount, how it is spent, and how it is allocated between local and national union.

Loss of autonomy: Unionization requires that a union member sacrifices his individuality for the group. One may disagree with the decisions of the union but he or she is bound to them (Helen, 2012).

Less collaborative working environment: Research shows that unionized workers normally experience a sense of less trust and partnership with their supervisors, with most employees saying that the supervisors treat them as if they are the boss rather than their partner. This situation is opposite to that for the non-unionized workers. According to Keller (2012), a less collaborative working environment has a negative impact on the operations of an organization.

Narrative and Descriptive Essay

Dressed in my woollen coat, a scarf carefully wrapped around my neck and a glove in each hand, I was standing at the airport in a chilly afternoon with bags in my hands eager to go back home after almost three years. Everything here looked calm, but with long queues of passengers checking in. As usual, airports are very busy at this time of the year with many people travelling to various destinations to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones. I patiently waited in line for my turn. In a business suit and reading a newspaper while he waited was a white man who looked as though he was travelling for business. He seemed very composed and not like the person behind me who was constantly nagging complaining about the congestion issue in airports.

You know, after the September 11 incident people of my religious believes have been viewed differently as supporters of the bombing that led to the death of thousands of Americans and others from different countries (Moore 2009). Since then I have learned to keep to myself by refraining from engaging in any discussions with people that might lead me to trouble. “I really can not stand this kind of congestion; the airport management has to do something about it. What do you think?” the lady behind me asked. Without a definite answer, I solemnly agreed by nodding my head. By now, I could get a slight pinch from my left shoe because I had been standing for hours and could not wait to get to the front of the line.

Finally, it was my turn. I felt some excitement since it would be just a few hours, then I would be with my family back in India. The lady welcomed me with a broad smile as the airport authority has tutored them to. “Good afternoon, can I have you ticket and passport please?” the lady asked politely. I handed them to her with my left hand since my right hand was overwhelmed with all the bags that I was carrying. She examined my passport very carefully checking all the important details. By looking at her, I could tell that she was newly employed since she looked very enthusiastic about her job. She was wearing a blue suit with a blue scarf wrapped around her neck to match her outfit. Her name was Mitchell as clearly indicated on the badge hanging by her neck. “Please wait at the corner for you to go through the security checks” she said and again with that broad smile on her face.

At the corner where, I was directed, two men and a lady with security uniform were waiting eagerly for me. They hurriedly snatched my bags from me demanding that I take my coat, scarf and shoes for a thorough inspection. My bag was ruthlessly opened and all the clothes that took me hours to pack were now lying on the floor. The lady and one of the men were going through my bags as the other man searched my coat carefully examining what his colleagues were doing. “With these people you can never be sure of what they are carrying” the one holding the coat said in a stern voice. Looking back at the other passengers on the queue, all were paying close attention to what was going on anticipating for pulling out of any suspicious item that resembled a bomb from my bag. That had to be the most embarrassing incident that I had been through. It could not even match up with the time that a white man stopped me in the streets as though to ask for something. “If it was not for you, my daughter would be alive today” he shouted at the top of his voice in an angry tone attracting the attention of other people passing by. That moment has lingered in my mind ever since, but I have to admit that my experience at the airport wins the award for most humiliating and embarrassing moments of my life.

After searching all my belongings, I was directed to join the other passengers waiting for the flight which was that was going to finally reunite me with the rest of my family. I collected my clothes carelessly putting them in my bag with tears running down my cheeks. Everybody looked at me suspiciously avoiding me like plaque. I could see the disappointment in their faces since they all expected that the security officers would find something in my bag to make an arrest.

As discussed in the article “In a Virtual Internment Camp: Muslim Americans since 9/11”, Muslims in America are living with constant fear and discrimination. What happened to me at the airport and even on the streets has happened to many Muslims after the September 11 terrorist attack. It is therefore our responsibility to accept what happened and look for possible solutions without always looking for someone to point fingers at.
