Good and evil

Social evil is the occurrence of issues that can be termed as detrimental to part of, or all the members in the society. Furthermore, social evil is fueled by issues of inequality or unfairness in the society. This is represented by the people in the society having an unequal access to basic human rights and dignity. For example in Mississippi is Burning racism is an issue that results to inequality in the society. First part of the scene depicts two signs one reading ‘colored’ while the other one reading ‘white’ as a show of racial segregation and hence inequality in the society. Secondly, basic human rights such as housing are denied to the blacks in the society because of racism. The film depicts the whites’ houses as stable and solid buildings near the affluent town while the blacks live in shackles, small wooden cottages away from town.

Moral evil is the occurrence of an intentional action that has a negative orientation and can result to the doer of the action being held accountable. These include murder and arson as depicted in the film Mississippi is Burning. The actions are negative because they intentionally cause harm to other people in then society. First, the film is mainly about the investigation of three murders that occurred in reality in the county of Neshoba during the wake of the civil rights movement. The Ku Klux Klan is depicted as murderers of the black people, epically the ones who are likely to talk to the FBI about crimes. Second, arson is depicted in a scene in which the Ku Klux Klan burns down the home of a family with a son who may talk to the FBI.

The bible quote from Leviticus 25:44-46 which states that:

“Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they beget in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigor as stated by the deputy wife is believed to apply to the Southerners experience of racism and slavery. For instance, in the film, Pell states that they reject Orientals and blacks because it was the role of the Ku Klux Klan to protect the democracy of the Anglo-Saxon as the bible demand that they protect their land. Second, the blacks are treated as unequal because they firs appeared in the Southern as slaves. The quote in the bible shows that strangers shall be bought as slaves and will continue working as slaves to the forth generation.

The two agents investigating the murders use both positive and negative attempts to investigate the existing evil in the Jessup County in Mississippi. Agent Alan Ward, a liberal from the north and Agent Rupert Anderson who is a former sheriff in Mississippi and thus understands the evil occurring in the society use different approaches to investigate the murders. A negative aspect is observed when the working relationship between the two agents deteriorates and they do not work together in an effort to concur the evil in the society. Agent Ward is more direct as an investigator while Agent Anderson is subtle. For example, in his subtle ways, Agent Anderson uses a negative approach by seducing the wife of the Deputy Sheriff, Clinton Pell, and consequently, gets to know the location of the dead bodies. This leads to the wife being violated by the Sheriff and she lands in hospital. However, on the positive side, agent Anderson takes care of the wife and confronts the Deputy Sheriff about the murders and the violation. However, the confrontation takes a negative approach when he threatens the Sheriff with a razor in the barber shop, beats him and leaves him to rotate on the barber’s chair. On the other hand, a positive approach is seen when agent Ward attempts to stop the harassing ways agent Anderson. Another negative approach used by agent Anderson is when he involves subtle tactics that involve sending in another FBI agent to abduct the mayor and threaten him about using a razor to castrate him. Nevertheless, the positive part is that the mayor gets to give information that leads to the arrests of the suspected Ku Klux Klan members. Agent Anderson also uses trickery to invite the Ku Klux Klan members, a move that put the life of Lester Cowan in danger as the KKK members believe he was talking to the FBI. The positive impact is that the FBI finally gets hold of the murderers and apprehends them to the court.

The final scene of the film shows that good appears to triumph over evil. The FBI has enough evidence to acquit the members of the Ku Klux Klan who murdered the three civil rights activists, and the corpses found. These members are charged with Civil Rights violations and tried at the federal level. Most of them are found guilty, and given sentences ranging between three and ten years. The balance of good over evil can be maintained in terms of political rightness. Good will endure over evil because of the social order and this is superficial but it is hard to tell whether the individual morality is ruled by the good. For instance, only part of the members of the Ku Klux Klan but the organization re mains. This can perpetuate evil later after some period of good and calmness.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, which is also known as clap or drip, is a common sexually transmitted infections in humans. As it categorization suggests, it is spread from one person to another through sexual contact with an infected person. People who contract the diseases especially women are likely to have their reproductive system adversely affected (Shmaefsky, 2009). It is a production of infection by a bacterium called Neisseria gonnorrhoeae. The disease has a number of symptoms which, unfortunately, may be subtle in some patient. In such cases, the patient can spread the infection to other people s/he has sexual contact with. As such, sexual contact remains the grates risk factor, and thus people who engage in sexual activity with many people have the highest risk of getting infected. In the presence of symptoms or a suspected case of infections, healthcare providers employ three different tests to diagnoses the disease and uses various antibiotics to treat it.

Risk factors increase the probability of a patient contracting a disease (Shmaefsky, 2009). For gonorrhea, sexual contact with multiple partners is the greatest risk factor. Others include sex with a new partner, inconsistent use of a condom, and previous diagnosis of the disease, oral and annuls sex, presence of infection by other STIs, sex work or prostitution, and indulgence in drugs. Age is also a significant risk factor. Most men and women bellow the age of 25 years, and more so, teenagers who are sexually active have a compounded risk of getting infected than any other age group. Most of these factors create opportunities for the bacteria responsible for the condition to move from one person to another. Sharing of clothes has also been said to posses such ability and is thus considered a risk factor (Ford, & Bowers, 2009).

Infected persons exhibit various kinds of symptoms. However, it is not every infected person exhibits symptoms of the disease. Symptoms may also vary from men to women. Symptoms may occur between the second and the tenth day of as contracting the infection. However, sometimes they take up to a month before they become noticeable. In men symptoms include, a greenish whitish or yellowish discharge oozing from the penis, a burning sensation during urination, burning sensation in the esophagus and swollen throat glands in those who engage in oral, swollen and painful testicles. Men normal exhibit these symptoms between two to fourteen days after contracting the infection (Shmaefsky, 2009). For women, symptoms include spotting after sex, burning sensation during urination, vulvitis, pain in the pelvic or lower abdomen, conjunctivitis, bleeding in between periods and swelling of throat land and burning sensation in the throat as a result of infection through oral sex. Sometimes the symptoms in women can go unnoticed. Vaginal discharge may sometime get confused for other infections such as yeast infection (Ford, & Bowers, 2009).

Treatment and prognosis for the infection can be done through taking antibiotics. However, it is not advisable for patient to treat themselves without recommendation from a doctor or first seeing a doctor for diagnosis. Healthcare providers can help determine up to treatment options for the condition especially when it is accompanied by other STIs such as Chlamydia. A hepatitis B vaccine must be administered alongside the treatment and additional HPV vaccine for those under the age of 26 years. The patient must make a follow up after the seventh day, by revisiting the doctor, especially if s/he experiences joint pain, belly pains, skin rashes especially in the groin. Tests can be done to confirm whether the patient is totally healed. The patient must make contact with all persons s/he had sexual contact with to make sure they go for check up and treatment (Shmaefsky, 2009). Counseling for partners is also advisable. In general gonorrhea infections which are in their initial stages are easily cured by antibiotics. However, infections that have spread to other areas such as the blood stream require specialized treatment, but get batter after the treatment.

In conclusion, gonorrhea is a highly infectious disease that spread very quickly from one person to another through sexual contact. Between two to three days after infection, symptoms start exhibiting themselves. The symptoms vary from men to women; however in some cases they fail to exhibit themselves (Ford, & Bowers, 2009). There are a number of risk factors that expose people to infections avoiding these factors can help avoid getting infected. Knowledge about gonorrhea is critical since it can help people avoid infections. For, those who are already infected this information can help them recognizes the symptom and see treatment since gonorrhea is very common. Failure to recognize symptoms and seek treatment can lead to negative health consequences including bareness in women.

Gone Girl Analysis

Introduction

Unlike the depiction by the title, Gone Girl is not about a lady’s literal departure. The title represents the crisis for the crossing out of individuality of Amy, a woman with who Nick believed he had tied the knot. The woman turns out to be quite different, with so many changes in her humor, wit and even class. The lady’s mannerisms become gruesome beyond expectations and even attempts to frame Nick for her murder despite being alive (Rothman 5).

The David Fincher-directed movie features characters that are psychologically intricate. It is a detailed production with several subplots based on Gillian Flynn’s crime novel. The film is setup in North Carthage in Missouri, a place that has been plagued by recession (Rothman 6).

Genre Analysis

Mystery is the genre portrayed in the film to a large extent. At the launch, the movie seems ordinary. Amy is described as a lovely young woman who has disappeared, and Nick becomes the primary suspect. Nick is described as a murderer who was already out of patience, and failed to draw a proper plan, for which case Amy’s disappearance can be traced back to him (Rothman 6).

However, the twist is developed in the movie as a mystery is uncovered. Amy’s death is turned around, and she’s proven to be alive. The first mystery case creates a wonder and an audience inquiry into the reasons for her faked death. Curiosity centers on the possible planner of all that and the motives for doing that.

The revelation of Amy as the mastermind behind her fake death and an attempt to frame Nick points at another mystery. The real girl nature earlier depicted in the movie as Amy’s character is twisted as the figure is replaced with a weird, vengeance-steeped and very difficult to comprehend the character (Rothman 6).

Unexpected scenarios and buildup of events define the convention of mystery in Gone Girl. The twists in the film, however, push it beyond the box of mystery to drama and crime that engages the film in high gear.

Structural Analysis

Though Gone Girl is not an average every time story teller in the first voice, Nick and Amy are depicted as the films’ story tellers (Rothman 5). There is a twofer as not only Nick’s experiences are narrated, but revelations into Amy’s endeavors are made. Nick’s innocence and side of the story are revealed through his interaction with the investigating authorities and constant claim for innocence. The audiences are let into Amy’s narration majorly through her diary. Taking vengeance to the level of frame for murder by Amy is partially made understandable through her agony as depicted in the diary (Rothman 6).

The audience is directly engaged by the narrators at some points an instance for which Nick makes a statement about having a mistress, when Andie is introduced into the film (19.20). Amy also makes a revelation about her diary to the audience through an indication that it was meant for liking by the audience (Rothman 6).

Breaking of the fourth wall pulls the audience into the fight, making hard to choose with who to side.

Marriage is used as the symbolic association in the film as Amy disappears on the eve of their fifth anniversary for the couple’s wedding.

Nick’s cheating in the marriage spurs Amy’s need for revenge, that takes the twists of her change in character further after marriage. The character change, the cheating and the frame for murder are all depictions of a marriage gone sour (Rothman 6).

Money is also used as a symbol as the couple both loses their jobs and has to rely on Amy’s trust fund. When Amy’s parents take back some of the funds for reasons of poor sales, a new financial crisis sets in that further strain their relationship.

Through the media, a chilling effect is achieved when the story goes viral. Truth is taken under the water by public opinion, and more of the guilty character is given to Nick. Cynicism creates a drip that develops greater interest in the film (Rothman 5).

Sound Analysis

In the opening scene, there is silence and the only sound sounds audible are from cars in the streets, which make it possible for neighbors to hear a gunshot. The start is ended with a rapid noise burst that serves to bring the viewer back from anxiety (Rothman 5).

The flashback into the couple’s meeting is set with a bright tune in the music

The inevitable arrival of the pulse creates clues to the location of Amy’s body that further incriminates Nick. The song becomes louder as the strings go higher, and the sense of Nick’s claustrophobia is ramped up (Rothman 6).

The reverberant, ethereal and unnerving siren calls create elicitations of shiver and detachment.

Conclusion

The film is one with so many twists and turns as depicted in the end when Amy reunites with Nick. Despite all the stress and pressure piled on Nick previously by Amy, he later loves her unconditionally. Moreover, a sense that the marriage will not have a bright future is depicted by Amy’s deliberation that she will always have the last word. The development of the movie and the subsequent unfolding of events make it interesting, but portray the characters as individuals with psychological complexes.
