Practices of intentional and unintentional racism

My interaction on this article has enabled me to get a wide view of racism that happens in a micro scale, concerning segregation by colour. It catches me unawares to learn that most of the time this small-scale racism has been perpetuated by people unknowingly. Also, I am a changed person in the way I have been viewing racism especially in the modern times. It is frightening to learn that the racism that was once thought to be ending is changing face in the modern world and is rampant in some places. This is very different compared to what I knew before concerning racism. I held the belief that racism ended with the enacting of laws refusing discrimination of people on the basis of colour. Also, interesting is the degree to which it is difficult to determine the dynamic nature of micro-aggressions, and the damaging effect unintentional micro-aggressions have on the victims.

From this article about micro-aggressions, it is evident that the changing face of racism as taught in the class is very real. One interesting aspect that connects very well with the literature learned in the lectures is the contribution of both the political conservatives, and the liberals, on the perpetuation of racism, in the modern forms. I personally expected one group to be an anti-racist group. However, from the lectures and also this article, it is evident that both the political liberal group and the conservative political group contribute to modern racism in one way or the other. Also in a good connection here, is the point that this small-scale racism happens everywhere, every day.

When I relate this to working with organizations or companies, I realize that these are potential areas of perpetuation of micro-aggression. The relation here comes in that these are communities of people who are from diverse backgrounds. They are characterized with diversity and differences between them. When working with these communities, application of the knowledge and life skills I have earned from this article will be very vital in my relations with these people. It will help in handling people to make sure they are not offended.

The knowledge and the concepts I learn from this class are very exciting. It is very exciting to learn the diversity of creation and the behaviors of people as relates to their struggles to cope with life. What even excites more is learning what motivates people to behave the way they behave, or to act in a particular manner to some situations. When I consider myself now and before I joined the class, I get to know that my perspective of looking at people is very different. At the present times, I critically interpret the behaviors of people. However, applying some concepts that I have learnt in this class appears difficult. For example, while I struggle very much not to harm people, I have realized that some people are very difficult to handle. Unfortunately, some people are only offended by the style I wear. Enhancing relations with such people can be a bit difficult. They make me feel that all through I will be offending people. This feeling does not auger well with me. On my part, I have not just repressed the feeling. In my value of good relations between people who are living together, I try my best not to offend them. With the fact that no human being can live or stay alone, I have learnt that life is a matter of compromise, with a view to enhancing relations with others. With this, I have learnt to live a life of compromise.

System Disorder and Basic Concept Analysis Paper

The nervous system comprises two major components: the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) and Central Nervous System (CNS). Notably, the CNS is made up of the spinal cord and the brain while PNS comprises the spinal and cranial nerves, sensory neurons, ganglia, and neuromuscular junctions. The role of the cranial nerves is to transmit nerve impulses to and from the brain while spinal nerves transmit impulses to and from the spine. PNS is divided into two divisions, including sensory and motor division. The former receives impulses from the sensory receptors and transmits them through the nerves to CNS, while the later receives outgoing messages from the CNS and relays it to the intended body organs, telling them what to do. The role of the motor division is opposite of what sensory division does.

Pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

ALS is a nervous system’s degenerative disorder. Although its cause is yet to be established, the astrocytes, commonly known as glial cells, provide a relationship between capillaries and neurons for both metabolic and physical support, and contribute to the brain-blood barrier. Notably, the glial cells are capable of randomly starting secreting neurotoxins that can cross this barrier. The secreted neurotoxins can destruct the nerve tissue; thus, causing a severe CNS damage and loss of respiratory and swallowing function, which is caused by the actual loss of the fine motor control and paralysis and weakness of the body.

Pathophysiology of Impaired Physical Mobility (IPM)

IPM’s pathophysiology is self-explanatory. It is characterized by limitation in purposeful, independent body movement of one or more extremities. IPM can be caused by several factors. Some f these factors include alteration in integrity of bone structure, reduction in endurance, muscle mass, sedentary lifestyle, and neuromuscular impairment.

Link between ALS and IPM

ALS causes destruction of motor neurons of the CNS that causes complications of the IPM. Usually, ALS affects the lower neurons of the PNS and upper neurons of the CNS. IPM of the body entails extremities which causes paralysis of the body. The nursing interventions for the two conditions are similar, and both relate to healthy living styles.

The Economy that Slavery Built.

Slavery continues to have an impact on America economically in particular. The podcast categorically states that the institution of slavery was of great importance to the nation. Slaves turned a very weak America into a financial power house and the subsequent world superpower the cotton plantation where the slaves tirelessly worked in. the plantation was America’s first and the biggest business that laid the foundation for other systems to be built and to thrive on. When slavery was started the nation was young, and the buying and selling of African people and the wealth that the country generated from the cheap labor became a lucrative business that the government as a whole banked on.

According to the European colonial masters, the abundant land they had discovered in the Americas would be useless if they could not get the most sufficient and cheap labor to use to their advantage. Slavery was the only system that proved beneficial and the slaves could only be obtained from Africa. They seemed adequate and also ready to work. It is also important to understand that there was an existent slave trade; the Trans-Saharan slave trade which supplied slaves to work in the sugar plantations Mediterranean.

The cotton business that the slaves mainly worked on was considered as a modern business very lucrative and one that was maximizing profits. As the innovations on clothe making were made after the introduction of the cotton gin, the demand for cotton increased and in return it fueled the global industrialization , which opened up the state for other meaningful and beneficial economic ties with other nations and in return the commercial aspect of the nation was being installed. The slaves are seen as the most efficient laborers who tirelessly worked and their efforts even though forced gave the best results. The slaves were tasked with the responsibility of planting and harvesting thousands of pounds of cotton. The bodies of these slaves were stretched and served as the largest asset that America possessed at that particular time. They were tasked with the responsibility of maintain the country’s main export and as the production of the cotton increased due to the efficiency of the slaves the profits from the sale of the crop also skyrocketed and placed the United Nations into a position of the leading economies in the world.

The slave’s works on the cash crop plantation such as the tobacco, cotton and the sugar cane. There is an elaborate indication that the slavery was very fruitful to the prosperity of America. From the podcast we understand that it was close to impossible for the United States to build a commercial enterprise out of the wilderness without the help of the slaves CITATION Din17 l 1033 (Gerdeman). The transcript is important in todays’ history as it shows the connection between capitalism, and slavery in the United States. For the longest time the other side of slavery had not been brought to the lime light. It was only seen as being a cruel act which it still is, but the slaves single handedly set up an entire economy that was up and running and sustained itself for decades on end.

It is important to learn this history as it sheds light on how things came to be and the contribution of the slaves in the development of the nation. It is clear that necessity is the mother of all inventions and it shows in this podcast. The efforts of the slaves led to the production of a lot of the cash crops that were exported and the income obtained injected back to the business leading to the economic advancements in America.
