Students’ Pets Report
The interview was conducted via the phone using text messages since the interviewees; Citlaly Ibarra, John Lara, and Alyssa River-Carpio and I are good friends, schooling at the same institution. The interview was in line with our assignment regarding the students’ pets. All the interviewees have dogs as pets. Citlaly Ibarra has three dogs; Princess, Bella, and Murph. The three dogs are of different breeds; Princess is a mixed poodle, Bella a border Collie mix while Murph is a pure yellow lab. Princess is a small dog, Bella is medium, and Murph is a puppy. John Lara on the hand has two dogs as pets, Lexi and Davina. Lexi is a German Shepherd breed while Davina is a blue nose pit bull. Both are big dogs. Alyssa has two dogs as well, Apollo and Maya. They are of two different breeds with Apollo being a miniature schnauzer while Maya is a Yorkie poodle. The two dogs are small in size.
The pets are known to provide security despite their primary reason for being kept being pets. Ibarra says that the dogs are not guarding dogs as they are always inside the house, but they do bark when people get as far as the front lawn, and therefore, they provide security as well. Lara on the other hand primarily agrees that the dogs provide security as he doesn’t feel secure enough in the house and besides he uses the dogs as player partners. Alyssa on the other hand as well agrees that her dogs provide security as one of her pets, Apollo is more of a security dog. All the dogs provide security, and the interviewees agreed that the dogs alert them in case they sense something. Doesn’t matter the age of the dog, but all of them including the young ones have their way of alerting their owners either by barking or growling. The dogs sniff and identify strangers or intruders into the house or homestead, and bark at them alerting their owners.
Apart from providing security by alerting their owners, the dogs as well, help in reducing stress and sadness to their owners. Ibarra says that she loves her pets a lot as they provide company when she is watching movies especially for Princes, Bella in doing her assignments and Murph is very playful, and therefore, she doesn’t feel lonely. Lara says that sometimes they help him relieve stress or sadness. Alyssa on the other side is of a similar opinion in that; the dogs help her by providing comfort when she is upset, crying or in distress. The dogs help her to be active as they are all time in play moods. All the interviewees love their dogs as they play a vital role in their lives especially keeping comfort and company while at home where loneliness strikes.
Keeping dogs as pets have really changed the lives of the interviewees and therefore, they all thought that their lives would be entirely different if they hadn’t owned the dogs as pets. Ibarra strongly agrees that life would be very different, life would be sadder without her dogs as they are like kids, warm-hearted. Lara claims the same in that he wouldn’t feel secure enough for the house and that it would feel like no one is there to play with, making his life a misery and full of loneliness. Alyssa on the on the other hand as well, have a strong feeling that her life would be different, she loves her pets, and they love her back. They like to play, and they have developed a strong bond becoming more than friends.

Structuration theory refers to the creation and reproduction of the social systems (McPhee, Poole & Iverson, 2014). Groups and organizations do engage in certain behaviors so that they are able to achieve certain goals. The structure is necessary within an organization as it defines the process or the steps that need to be followed to ensure that the set objectives are pursued. Structure in an organization can, therefore, involve resources and regulations that are used in sustaining the firms. Through the structuration theory, the organizations are able to socially transform due to the regulations as well as resources dictating the interactions of the members in an organization.
The regulations along with the resources act as a mentor to characterization as well as the decisions that are made within an organization, and this makes it possible for the organization to make suitable and relevant decisions as the rules consist of the guidelines of how the goals set by the organization can be achieved. On the other side, the resources refer to the power to which all the individuals within the organization contribute towards the success of the organization (Banks & Riley, 2015). Therefore structuration allows for the members of the organization to have a better understanding of the social structure of their organization.
In any given organization, the power structure is evident and helps in guiding through the decision-making process enabling the members of the organization to achieve their set objectives. Each member within the organization has some form of power, for example, the superiors as well as the subordinates each possessing certain powers in the organization. The power provides for the members to attain their desires in the organization system, in a person, power can be treated as being a resource of authority aiding the firms to function efficiently and effectively. Concerning the structuration theory of communication, there are five different types of powers to which a person can exemplify, and they include; reward, coercive, legitimate, referent as well as expert powers.
The power of reward refers to the realization that individual within the firm is able to offer reinforcement that is positive. With the power of reward, the rewards may entail praises as well as material prizes. Being a freshman, I mostly deal with the power of reward on petty but frequent basis to act as a motivating factor in my academics. My instructor is able to reward me for the good work through the provision of encouragement or praise as well as minor gifts. Besides, as a scholar, plenty of chances for awards and honors are provided. The university as an organization holds the powers to reward as well and confers the greatest rewards to a student, and that is the college degree or certificate, and this acts as a motivating factor to the student having the knowledge that after years of hard work, they shall be conferred with a degree. As I am aware that my teachers hold more of the powers to reward, I do my best to produce better work, and by doing it, I receive verbal appreciations from the teachers providing an incentive for much better work the next time in the essence of seeking greater rewards.
Coercive power, on the other hand, refers to the realization that an individual in the firm has the powers to punish, making others within the organization comply with the rules set by their superiors to avoid the negative consequences. As a student, the coercive power is provided to the same people who hold the reward power, and due to this, I not only work hard to achieve better grades and rewards but also do work hard to avoid ridicule and punishment by my professors so that I am able to maintain my credibility.
Referent power refers to the establishment of a relationship between a superior and a subordinate in an organization. An individual in possession of the referent powers is friendly and respected person serving as a role model. I believe that my teachers have for some time subjected me to referent powers. I do respect my teachers so much mostly because of their personality as well as their interactions with the students especially me.
Legitimate powers of structuration allude to power of exertion due to a specific title held by an individual (O’Sullivan & O’Dwyer, 2015). In the academic community, a large number of people exert their influence on others simply due to their titles. For example in my case, I do comply with my professors simply because she has a higher rank in the academic field; therefore, I do have to respect them. Expert power, on the other hand, refers to a person possessing a specific set of knowledge and expertise. The individuals with nth expert powers in an organization are very valuable as the powers allow individuals to help in decision-making processes and at the same time act as a source of knowledge whenever they are consulted.
In my case as a student, my professors are knowledgeable in my academic field, and therefore they provide us with knowledge and expertise so that we are molded up to be skilled individuals like them. We not only receive training from them but as well we do seek advice from them on what to do, and so they play a crucial role in my decision making in school. Therefore, the structuration theory in communication has been an integral part in my school career as it has enabled me to communicate and interact effectively with my seniors in the bid of improving my skills and soaring greater heights in academics through better performance.

Strategic Leadership and Change Management
I once worked with a fast food company that had a large number of customers. The company was big such that it was contemplating expanding and establishing another branch to a nearby town. But despite the idea of expansion, the company faced a major blow that could even saw its fall and decline in customer. The company had a higher rate of employee turnover, and this was a significant threat to its success considering the idea that was to initiate a sister business in the neighborhood. The high rate of employee turnover was a result of the poor working conditions, poor salaries considering the nature of the work, poor relations between the administration and the employees as well as discrimination at the workplace.
The management saw that the situation could escalate and this meant that they would be pocketing very little in terms of profit considering that new employees had to be trained with the relevant skills for the job and this meant more spending. Due to this, they wanted to improve the employee retention rate, and thus, they called for all employees in the firm to discuss the current issues regarding the increased employee turnover. The employees were offered an opportunity to give the reasons that they thought resulted in the situation. At this stage of unfreezing, the employees sighted the problems of poor remuneration, poor working conditions, and discrimination at the workplace.
Due to this, the management saw it possible to revert the trend as the issue was just a minor problem, they raised the salaries to meet the employee expectations, improved the working conditions by reducing the working hours and increasing the number of employees to reduce the workload, and as well reduced the coercion of employees by the management. Every employee was to be treated equally regardless of the department they were working. After the suggestions and implementation were put in place, the increment was permanent, and even the management added other benefits to the employees such as promotions and health insurance. Besides, the culture of employee center approach was maintained. After two months, they were able to open the other branch as the problem was solved. The company now has the highest retention rate for its employee, and this can be attributed to the high-profit ends. The success can be attributed to the inclusion of the employees to decision making, therefore, fostering a sense of belonging to the company.
