The Distances Between Us—Turning the Story and System Upside Down
Undocumented Immigration
I can trace my family’s journey to the United States back to the late 1960s. My grandparents had the idea of an American Dream before other immigrants caught wind of it. Just like the cliché immigration story, my grandparents came to America hiding in the back of a van that was ferrying some kind of groceries. As my aunt Lupe puts it…” you had to sit on a crate and place your legs against those adjacent so that they do not roll and crush your knees.” My grandparents had one child by then, of course my Aunt Lupe. My father was born in Texas early 1970, nobody is sure about the exact date, there was more to worry about at the time than to keep record of such an important event. Their bravery and sacrifice is the reason why I was born in the United States and a citizen by this right. My family came from San Antonino Castillo Velasco village in Oaxaca de Juárez, a city in the state of Oaxaca. It was here that my grandfather and grandmother got introduced by their parents and got married. This is as far as I can trace the origin of my family. In America and for my siblings and me our grandparents are the highest on the family tree. There is no one beyond that according to our knowledge although we have heard stories of great grandparents and so on but having not seen them to some extent makes them irrelevant.
The issue of undocumented immigration is something I think about on a daily basis, even if it was not because my people used the same route, the media won’t let me forget. I perceive the country’s reaction to this issue as hypocritical because it was built by immigrants and for the general majority I sense ignorance. I have interest in the issue of undocumented immigration and thus significantly well versed in it by my own standards. My stand remains that the approach to the irregular immigration issue is unwarranted and violates human rights and undermines the democracy the United States passionately boasts of.
The majoritarian story or perception silences (mutes) and considers irrelevant (moots) the voices that matter. In influencing platforms such as school and research, the lived experience of immigrants is minimized, the salience of race is denied. The creators of A Better Life tell the story of undocumented kitchen workers, marginal laborers, and Mexican rodeos and gangs that make the economy of Los Angeles. The story of Ramon the truck thief creates a better understanding of what creates the undocumented people joining gangs and stealing to make ends meet. Ramon is not a bad person but rather a desperate one. Immigrants have the burden of working for money to send back to people left back home.
Watching A Better Life brings to life the effect of anti-immigrants pundits, enforcement crackdowns and a discriminatory education system on undocumented immigrants. The effect has been to instill the fear of deportation among immigrants as indicated by Galindo’s reaction to purchasing Blasco’s truck. The fear of deportation subjects undocumented immigrants to vulnerability to exploitation. Galindo is willing to forego the American dream and continue working manual labor lest he gets deported. In addition, the integration of undocumented immigrants and their children into the American society is faced with obstacles with adult immigrants remaining on the margins of society. Their U.S. –born children are introduced to low education levels in addition to racial discrimination similar to what native-born minorities face.
After reading The Distances Between Us, the first thought is that of a family that escapes their home to find a better life. Most immigrants come to the United States with certainty that everything will work out in a short while. Reyna Grande illustrates this case clearly as he discusses papi’s belief that he would be able to earn enough money for a better life for his family in America in a short while (Grande, 2013). What follows is frustration as things do not turn out as he wishes. Reyna’s mother will have to accompany her father and pull forces to secure his dream. Reyna Grande illustrates the pain children of immigrants experience as their parents leave to find better lives for them. Through sacrifice and bravery, the children of immigrants get to be born Americans or get opportunities they would otherwise not have back in their homeland. If anti-immigrants considered this motivation and compare to what they do on a daily basis to provide for their families they would be more tolerant.
The Distances Between Us with its emotional tone disputes the popular notion that immigration is criminality. Illegal immigration is illegal but not criminal from the perspective of a person who cares for the struggles of a person with a family just like theirs. With the way Evila treats Reyna Grande and her siblings, the reader wishes that papi and mami succeed and pulls them out of there. When one reads the news or encounters headlines and debates against immigration and rage directed towards it you cannot help but fear for the people in those situations. You feel afraid for children in the same situation as Reyna and her siblings. The biggest mistake with the people that put a dark cloud on immigration is focusing on the endless arguments and unending news stories rather than looking at it as a human issue. In the distance between us, Reyna Grande gives an account of a human issue affecting actual people, an issue that is dismantling lives.
In the end, Reyna gets a piece of the American dream. She becomes the first in her family to attend and graduate college. He goes on to become a teacher having been inspired by her teacher- Diana. She hopes to become like her and inspire people as she did her. In her teaching experience with immigrant children, she realizes that they suffered the same fate as her, at one point in their lives they have had to spend time away from their parents. In the end as Papi, lies on his death bed, she is unable to deny the dying man a brief reprieve from her judgment. Her experiences combine to allow her to see the man as being imperfect, but a hero whose goal was to give his children a better life than he had.
After reading The Distances Between Us and watching A Better Life, one can help but admire the spirit and pluck of the immigrants to seek new lives in a place where there are more opportunities. Risking everything to change the narrative from a point where they have always had nothing to lose. People who work tough physically demanding jobs to send money back home to families left there. A group that brings new and fresh energy and vitality into host communities. As much as they use dubious and illegal ways they are everyday heroes as Sekuta Meta illustrates in his book This Land is Our Land (Meta, 2019). The story in The Distance Between Us, A Better Life and The Circuit rejuvenates the image of undocumented immigrants in a time when manipulators like President Donald Trump and Viktor Orban the Hungarian prime minister are politicizing their plight for personal gain. Having read The Distance Between US, The Circuit and watched A Better Life the images that have become common of children being separated from their parents sinks even deeper and is more heartbreaking. However, the egalitarian rhetoric of integration, inclusion, and opportunity has been unable to stand against the Republican idea of sovereignty and calls for a stronger border.
However, these stories and the image they create about immigrants do not sufficiently shorten the distances between us in an era where print has been overshadowed by the internet and electronic information transfer. People also tend to believe and are easily rallied by what is said on social media, what can be found on search engines and what popular people say. For this reason, the use of empirical data and deep-seated historical analysis is more effective. For instance, the economic impact of the immigrant population is quite significant. According to the CAP immigration team (2017), immigrants contributed $2 trillion to the United States growth domestic product in the year 2016. Although this number was mostly from immigrants flooding the labor force particularly blue-collar jobs, they also boosted the country’s productivity through innovation and entrepreneurship contrary to popular belief. By the year 2010, immigrants and immigrant children born in the country founded about 50 percent of fortune 500 companies (CAP Immigration Team, 2017). Looking at this fiscal data, immigration is positive to the country’s economy rather than negative and this is the kind of voice that is muted and rendered irrelevant.
Another issue is the common complaint that immigrants steal jobs from the natives. Empirical data to the contrary exist which suggests that immigrants do not compete with but instead complement the Native American workers, especially those that are lesser-skilled. Immigrant and U.S.-born workers have different skill sets regardless of similarity in educational backgrounds and for this reason tend to work in different industries (Carnegie, n.d.). Immigrants complement the skill sets of native resulting in their enhanced productivity. Another thing contrary to the propaganda of anti-immigrants, immigration impacted positively on the wages of individuals born in the U. S. increasing it by 0.4 percent each week. According to Heidi Shierholz, immigrants created this effect through the consumption of goods and services consequently creating jobs for both groups (CAP Immigration Team, 2017).
Talking of the United States activities in Latin America creates a better genesis to the whole immigration issue. At the precincts of the conventional expansive stalemate over this issue lies over a hundred years of historical U.S. interventions, that those against immigration and the government are not open to discussing. The U.S. has cut deep wounds through Latin America since Theodore Roosevelt’s declaration of the United States’ right to exercise an “international law and order” leaving scars that will define the region for generations. This history of intervention cannot be separated from the existing Central American crisis of internal and external displacement and migration. For over a century, the United States has orchestrated military coups, neoliberal draining of resources, and commercial predatory that has left Latin America lost in poverty, violence, and instability that drive people from their homes.
Pundits are not willing to discuss how America has undermined democracy and stability in Latin America through military and economic interventions resulting in vacuums that create operating grounds for drug cartels and guerilla alliances. In less than two decades, CAFTA-DR – an agreement between the United States, the Dominican Republic and five other Central American Countries for free trade – has restructured the region’s economy to rely on the United States through unimaginable trade imbalances and the invasion by American agricultural and industrial products undermining local industries (Tseng-Putterman, 2018). Nonetheless, there is no significant connection drawn between the flagging of Central American rural agricultural markets by CAFTA and increased relocation from this region in the years since. In simple terms, the United States does not take any responsibility for the conditions that result in Central Americans migrating into the country.
There definitely are ways to fix the immigration problem beyond building walls, separating families and barely getting by. One way is enhancing legal migration. Giving people the hope of gaining entry into America pursuant to law is an effective way of reducing irregular immigration. In areas that the United States experience labor shortages, they can issue work visas. These are the areas that by far Americans are not signing creating gaps. Regular migration will help control organized crime that is being bolstered by people sneaking into the country. Lawful migration creates a win-win situation in the sense that it allows for proper security assessment.
The other solution is to assimilate immigrants. Assimilation should come in the form of training in basics such as the English language and civics. Helping immigrants learn the primary language of the country betters their chances for success. Acting against reverse assimilation is another way of reducing the tension between U.S. born individuals and immigrants due to fear of cultural diffusion. The American system for some time has been teaching anti-Americanism, which has allowed other cultures to come in and displace the native culture. The creation of institutions that help immigrants assimilate is for their own good because anti-Americanism harms immigrants by keeping them from embracing the host culture.
In conclusion, the system is biased, uncaring and does not guarantee the rights of individuals as it should. The main problem lies in the exclusion of the people that are directly affected by the immigration debate during the creation of policies and regulations. The country needs to take responsibility for its contribution to this problem and take on the weight as appropriate. It is time to give voice to people like Reyna Grande who experience the problem first hand. It is time to be aware of the problems of the people whose intricate stories have been reduced to headlines.

“We are done,” were the words of Alcee to Calixta after realizing they would not be there for each other. She closed the door behind her and with trembling hands looked into the eyes of Alcee passionately. Calixta was in her best dress and looking at her lover’s eyes she smiled and confidently made her face into a frown. She felt her emotional world had been knocked down by the words which seemed to pierce straight into her heart. “Give me your hand; you will feel better,” Alcee reassured. “I will feel uncomfortable. I feel stressed thinking about how I will cope with not seeing you on a daily basis” she was stressed from the tone of her voice. Her world had come crashing down. They were the last words that she expected from the person who meant the world to her. Tears cascaded down her chubby cheeks but Alcee knew that was the best option for them.
She remembered vividly how they met and regretted having consented to the love that was slowly brewing. They were at a school party, and everyone was full of energy and excitement. Alcee had been admiring Calixta for the better part of the party. Realizing he could not hold the feeling, he decided to make a move. On the other hand, Calixta had seen him on another event but did not feel like greeting him. “You must be Calixta.” To which she replied, “You must be Alcee.” Little did she know that she was going into a relationship with a loving, sane, patient and funny guy. He was also very intelligent and manipulative. This made Calixta contended that he would give her the life of her dreams. He was intriguing because he was different and had great taste in food, furniture, clothes, and sex. She found him so sophisticated and unlike anyone she knew she appealed to him. He behaved like he was tortured and was comfortable around people and things. For a moment, she was flattered because of the basic reason that he chose her.
She loved the way he made her feel like a woman. He called her beautiful instead of cute, woman instead of girl and told her how smart she was. Looking at Alcee, she remembered how the first sight of each other made her feel they were destined and built for each other. “Your skin, smile, teeth, and laugh are as unique as you. I know I will never be attracted to anyone as I am attracted to you.” Those were the words that seemed to cut through the heart, leaving her speechless for a while. Within the first few months, he was open about having a family and children of their own. Calixta remembered that and felt sorry for her since all that would remain in their dreams. It was a pity.
The most memorable moment was the time she was invited to meet his mother. One question lingered in her mind as she remembered that special moment. “How can I prove my love to you?” It was beautiful and romantic, but she was still annoyed due to the basic fact that they would not be together. At first, she was not extremely attracted to him, but she learned to love him with time. It was this love that they had built for a long time that was breaking. Calixta avoided thinking of how her life would be after that. “I don’t blame you, I may be stupid to hold on, but I have no choice.” The memory was alive. The number of battles, years and joys since they first met made her emotional that she cried like a toddler. They broke up, and each went their way.
Calixta is busy with housework oblivious to the approaching storm. Bibi, his son, on the other hand, is worried about his mother at the Friedheimer’s store. “Mama will be afraid,” he noted. “She shut the house. Maybe she got Sylvie helping her this evening. Bobinot reassured. They had decided to remain at the store. Calixta was at home sewing some clothed unaware of the approaching storm. What she was sweating profusely despite the weather is calm. When she stood up, she noticed a familiar figure that was passing across the hedge. Alcee Laballiere rode in at the gate in his horse. She peered keenly through the bedroom window and could not believe what she saw. Calixta knew for sure that she missed Alcee and had been eagerly waiting for his call. No, he did not call. Riding into her gate was the last thought she would have. Nevertheless, the long wait was over most unimaginably and unexpectedly. She heard the melody of the doorbell and Alcee’s low cheerful voice. Calixta passed down the corridor to the kitchen with thoughts feeling her brain. “Oh what’s happening?” she did not want to open the door since she tried to escape reality. For a moment, she stood motionless since she was not expecting him and opened the door sharply.
They embraced and hugged in a moment that captured their imagination to a time when the two lovebirds were buried in the waters of love. Alcee was tall, athletic and strong. He pressed her to the door frame and kissed her deeply, quickly grabbing her behinds with both hands. He carried her to the bedroom. They had not whispered a word at all since him showing up at the doorstep. Calixta grabbed him tighter on their vast. He efficiently pulled up her dress and noticed how beautiful she was despite having spent their time together before. They kissed hot and passionately. Within no time, she was licking his earlobe and running her hands across his chest.
Calixta got more worried about her family despite her distraction having been distracted by the presence of her ex-love. They talked for a while of how they missed each other and that the storm had brought them together. When the storm passed, Alcee left and promised to call her to catch up on some lost moments and stories. Alcee was worried. Bibi and Bobinot came home and found the mother in a happy mood. They never found out he was there. She was delighted to see her family once again. After a week, Alcee called Calixta asking if they would meet for dinner. “Alcee, this cannot work out as you expect it to be. You have a wife, and I have a husband. We have children who depend on us directly. It would not be prudent for us to go back to our former lives despite them holding precious memories in our hearts. “For a moment, he faced and accepted reality despite feeling heartbroken for the second time. Calixta was glad that he understood. They talked about the time they were together and deep in love. They spoke of the future which they would spend differently. The storm settled and they went back to their lives. When the storm was over, everybody was comfortable with the destiny of events.
Postoperative Assessment
Postoperative Assessment
Postoperative operative assessment is always referred to as the way in which a patient is examined regards to his or her perception on the operation. On the other hand, the nurses also observe the behavior and the psychological responses. During this period, it is recommended that the vital signs and the observation of the behavior of the patient is not to be used unless the patient is not in a position to communicate. The patient may encounter some problems after the operation so it usually required that the pain management be done during the postoperative care. This can be done through non-analgesic and analgesic strategies to manage the patient’s pain. For example in the case of 44 year old Sophie who is a postoperative on arthritis. As a nurse, it is recommended that the patient is taken care-off in a manner that will make her feel comfortable during this period.
The first thing will be to access the perception of the patient, which will include physiological and behavioral responses. This should never be used when assessing the patient unless she is in a condition that makes it impossible for her to speak. Secondly, reassessing and assessing of the pain should be done immediately during the period of postoperative. In this case, the frequency of the assessment of the pain is determined by the performance of the operation and the severity of the pain, example in the case of Sophie who has pain in the wound, which oozes thick yellow substance. For her, the assessment should take place after every two hours after the main operation (Donahue, 2010). For this reason, she should be attended to with a lot of aggression so that this situation can ease off or else the situation might worsen. On the other hand, the pain should be recorded as it intensifies or cools down and this will be in relation to the intervention, which will be easily identified on places that are accessible, and visible which may include the bedside sheet flow. In cases where the pain has not been properly controlled, it is required that the management plan is observed thoroughly. Finally, it is very essential that the patient is reviewed properly before the discharge process takes place (D’Antonio, 2010). This means that one should use the patient’s efficacy in regards to the pain and the management process.
During this period, the nurse is usually has a great important even before the operation. Therefore, it is good to understand the importance of the nurses during the postoperative care of the patient. One of these is the preparation of the patient several hours before the operation takes place. This can be done physically and psychologically. The nurse should also be responsible for the administration of the IV fluids incase the patient gets dehydrated before the operation. The vital signs of the patient are very imperative and should be recorded (Donahue, 2010). This is usually the work of the nurses. In some cases, there can be wrong diagnosis for the patient and it is required that the nurse gives accurate information so that the correct diagnosis is done for the patient. Some patients sometimes get anxious before the operation; therefore, the nurse is required to be in place to answer any question that may be put across by the patient. The nurse is also obligated to wash and shave the area to be operated before the surgery takes place (Dorschner, 2010).
After the operation, the nurse is also needed to be in position where she will be required to asses the pain of the patient using the pain scale. After this, the nurse will recommend the best pain reliever for the patient. The nurse is also required in the monitoring process of the vital signs as the patient is recovering from the operation in the hospital. The patient should be recommended to eat or drink after the nurse has reviewed her (D’Antonio, 2010). Moreover, the nurse is also responsible for monitoring the wound aseptically and this may include washing and dressing of the wound after every two days and removal of stitches and clips after ten days.
On the other hand, during the preoperative period, the data on the vital signs is usually taken. This data will also be useful during the postoperative period. This data will be used in the assessment period. The combination of both the preoperative and postoperative data will be used by the implementation of the next orders by the doctor (Buchan, 2002). Therefore, the data is very important in knowing any symptoms of complications so that the doctor may know how to deal with the situation. The patient is always assessed further immediately after the operation and by the help of the data of the vital signs will be made to use. These vital signs should include the body temperature of the patient, respiration and the heartbeat’s pulse rate. One should not forget about the blood pressure for it may tell a lot about the patient’s response to the drugs. These are always important because they show the presence of life.
During the assessment of the vital signs, the height and the weight of the patient are always put into consideration. These are mandatory because of several reasons, one of them being for diet management. This will enable the health team to determine whether the patient is gaining or loosing weight from the food that she is eating (Judd, 2009). On the other hand, they will also be able to observe and determine the medical status of the patient. This will be made possible, as they will be in a position to know if the patient is over or under weight, and if she is able to retain fluids in her body. The changes in the weight of the patient will enable the health care team to know the process at which the disease is progressing in the body. On the other hand, they will also be in a position to know the effectiveness of the supplement of nutrition that the patient is being given. The measuring of the weight and height will also make the health team know and calculate the dosage of medicine that the patient will be given. This is because the blood concentration and the weight of the always determines the how the dosage of drug is to be prescribed to the patient. Larger dosage is always given to the heavier people.
After the operation, the wound needs to be assessed and one needs to know the healing process of the wound. It is believed that the healing process is a systematic process that starts with the injury before it ends up with the physiological process of healing. There is only one systematic factor, which helps, in the healing process of the wound (Judd, 2009). This process requires continual assessment of the wound, which is holistic in nature. This is one factor, which will help in the fastening of the wound to heal. If the wound is assessed accurately, one will be able to know an occurrence of the problem whenever it takes place. These problems can be a hindrance to the healing process. Therefore, this problem will be noticed early and proper care will be taken for the wound to enable it to heal (Buchan, 2002).
The wound needs to be taken care-off after the operation. That is why in the case of Sophie’s wound, there are some things that need to be done. Sophie’s wound is classified under the secondary healing intention. Therefore, one should be able to consider the location of the wound. This will make one understand the reason why the wound has is not yet healed and the reason why it has yellow substance oozing from it. The second consideration should be dimension and the depth of the wound (Delucia et al, 2009). There are big wound that sometimes take time heal, maybe Sophie’s wound is bigger than expected. Moreover, the other thing that should be considered is the location and the depth in which the wound is tunneling. There are some wounds that are tunneled more to the inside than the other parts. These types of wound takes time to heal. Moreover, the stage of the wound should always be put into consideration whenever it is being assessed. There are some wounds that are on stages that are difficult to heal without being catalyzed to heal. Therefore, the case of Sophie needs to be analyzed and understand the reason why it is oozing yellow substances; perhaps it is not on a proper stage of healing (Delucia et al, 2009).
There are some wounds that require aseptic techniques, which is also known as the non-touch technique. This technique is all about maintenance of the asepsis and no touching of the wound. There are people that say that it is important as it is about the sterile technique. There are some standardized practices, which are always involved in the maintenance of the asepsis. The first component is that the hands should always be washed effectively. This will be to ensure that the dirt acquired from the air does not reach the wound of the patient. The second component is that the key parts should never be contaminated. This is essential for the patient not to incur any other complications that might be as a result from germs and dirt. The other consideration should be that the non-key parts should be touched with a lot of confidence. This will ensure that the non-key parts will be assessed fully which will enable the key parts to heal properly without interference. Finally, the precautions that are to be taken should be effective. This effectiveness will ensure that there are no complications that will be experienced by the patient due to carelessness (Delucia et al, 2009).
The aseptic is very effective and it has been known for ages to be time saving and the cost is effective. This is because it requires minimum resources and staff to deliver the services. The technique is also easy to apply since it can be taught easily and its awareness is easy to put into place. Moreover, in Sophie’s case, it will be applicable since her wound has already been contaminated. This form of technique will really work for her (Davies, 2002). By looking at the effectiveness of the technique one will be able to understand how to take care of her. The first reason is due to poor practice. In areas such as the intensive locations and the theatres, do not allow the technique practice to be implemented easily. This will allow her the chance of being in the position of receiving care in regards to application of the technique; this is because she is taken care-off from home. The second section is on false sense of security, this is in the sense that the wound will not be given false alarm that may have resulted from contamination (Davies, 2002).
The case study has put everything down that one of the caustic issues that might have weakened her wound to heal is the massive infection. The infection might be due to the contaminated environment that she is in. It is for this reason that the aseptic technique is qualified for her situation. If the technique could have been applied earlier, then the situation would have been different. Perhaps her wound would have been healed by now. The second reason might be due to over-weight. The problem that is caused by over weight is that the situation always deepens the wound. This can be a problem to make the wound be in a position to heal (Grammaticos, 2008).
Conclusion
Sophie had undergone an appendectomy that meant that she had an infection on her appendix and so an inflammation had to take place. By looking at her condition, it is discovered that she is allergic to penicillin. This calls for a postoperative care for her. However, it was noticed that she had complications on the healing process of the wound that made her have yellow ooze on the wound. This was due to some infection. It was for this reason that she was recommended to have an aseptic technique. This technique has been seen to be prospective when it is a question of po0stoperative care since it is clean and safe for the patients.
