In my opinion, the three incidences on the bus, hotel, and the poetry reading all have one thing in common; a misguided misconception about Latino Women. The people who interact with Ortiz have the misconception that Latina women are uneducated, cheap, and only qualify to work in informal occupations such as waitressing cashiers. At the poetry reading event, one of the guests confuses Ortiz for the waiter and asks her to bring her drinks. This shows the influence of old myths and stereotypes on the lives of Latinos.
Cofer says that the different kinds of Latinas who are recognized by mainstream Anglo-American culture are Spanish people. Cofer makes observations about how people classify people like herself because she wants to clarify that people are too quick to judge other people based on their outward experiences and what they have heard about people who look in a certain way. Cofer tries to change the narrative with her writing because she hopes to eliminate stereotypes that continue to alienate people on lines of race and origin.
Contrary to expectation, Cofer reacts in a very calm and collected manner to the people who judge her based on her Latina roots. You would expect her to lash out in anger and confront their opponent, but on the contrary, she politely puts the other party in their place without disrespecting them. On the other hand, Mair reacts with a lot of emotions as she is hurt by the way people treat her because she is disabled. While Cofer is determined not to let their opponent but them down, Mair is hurt beyond measure. Both reactions are a manifestation of the extent to which gender stereotypes can affect how people treat their fellow human beings.
Without a doubt, in the past I have found myself in situations where I misjudged people based on something that I heard about them. However, this is not the case anymore. I realized that judging people based on the experiences of others is not right. Just as there are two sides to a coin, I prefer exploring and discovering these things by myself instead of relying on hearsay. I realize that fact that a person has a bad experience with a person does not necessarily mean that my experience will be bad. For instance, you can judge a person and conclude that a person is rich because they live in posh neighborhood or drive an expensive car, but the properties might not even belong to them in the real sense. It may seem hard, but I believe that we can live without making a perception about people.
By July 2016, white Americans comprised the majority of the racial population in the US. Latino and Hispanic comprise the biggest ethnic minority accounting for an estimated 18% of the total population. African Americans comprise the second biggest racial minority accounting for 13.4% of the total US population. It is estimated that by 2045, the white population will become minorities. I think this will affect how minorities are treated because the tables will have turned, and white people will be on the receiving end. They will experience the same racial discrimination Hispanics, Latinos, and African Americans do.
Article 2
Staples describe himself as invisible in the presence of others. He also states that people see him in different lights. Staples talks at time people confuse him for a criminal when he is walking around the streets of New Work. He even mentions a scenario where we walked into a jewelry store, and the lady owner went to the back and came back with an enormous strainer. The lady judged him by his black appearance and thought he was a burglar. This has to do with the misconceptions that people have formed about people of color with regard to violence and insecurity.
Staples demonstrate that he has found himself in scenarios where his presence has put him in danger because he made other people uncomfortable. The last sentence talks about how hikers wear cowbells when they go land of bears. This is itself a paradox because, if his existence so threatens people, it beats the logic of walking around announcing your arrival if indeed you are a dangerous person who should be feared. It worth noting, Staples walks around humming because he is afraid for his safety, and humming eliminates the possibility of him being viewed as a burglar.
Staples reaction to the encounter he has had with racists by taking up measures such as walking the streets while humming to avoid being confused for a thief. Additionally, in some instances, she is forced to run away and hide with the multitudes to avoid confrontation. Baldin’s reaction to his encounter at the restaurant is clouded because he feels guilty that his friend had to lie to send the police in the wrong direction. He is also disturbed at the realization that he could have died and he was prepared to kill someone else. This shows that Staples was not as courageous as Baldin in standing up for himself that is why he hid, which shows that people during Baldin’s time were more woke and empowered to fight for their rights.
At the beginning of staples essay, I identified with the young woman described as walking down the street. She seems worried about a man who appears to be tracking her, and eventually she paces and disappears into the cross street as she is in fear. I identified with her because I can relate to the experience of other people, making me feel insecure. This scenario affects my reading of the rest of the texts as it helps me understand precisely what Staples was going through when he was accused of being a burglar.
Staples result in humming as we walk on the streets to minimize his chances of being labeled as a thief. Some people might argue that this action is not viable in reducing the fear that is eating him up inside because there is no assurance that by humming, he will not be seen as a thief. Despite his tactics chances are that people will still judge him based on his appearances, which is informed by stereotypes along racial lines.

Homeschooling has several advantages including one-to-one teacher child ratio that enhances understanding of the child. Children and family needs always come first as parenting style may always fit teaching and child’s learning style. According to Hornby (2011), homeschooling may further assist in tailoring curriculum to the child’s current interest an children who love what they learn may gain a lot of information (18-23). Moreover, homeschooling may make sure that a concept is covered when the child is prepared but not the way the school wants to present them. Homeschooling also helps in protecting a child’s self-esteem especially amongst slow learners or for the children with learning disabilities because they are not exposed to other children or to people who do not understand them.
In addition, friends are always available of all ages with similar ethnic and religious background and adequate utilization of time may provide balance between play, sports, downtime, and learning activities. According to Lois (2013), there is also more active time, snacks, and breaks available hence, a child is able to balance the use of time in person (34-43). Moreover, there are many choices on how work should be done and scopes of topics may be customized. Additionally, children spend most of their time with siblings and parents understand the contents of the curriculum as well as what to apply in the daily activities do. There are no issues of negative peer pressure influencing children undergoing homeschooling and children learn to work cooperatively with siblings instead competing with classmates.
However, there are some disadvantages associated with homeschooling such as parents losing full time income for spending time with their children at home. It is also difficult to find good children that can help a homeschooling child to build quality relationship. Moreover, it may not be easy to research the best curriculum that can work for the parent (Richards, Hull & Proctor 2012, pp. 45-56). There are many curriculums existing and finding the best one for a child may not be easy for a parent. There are issues such as dealing with frustrations of sometimes being behind and being patient with children who may not be learning anything. Homeschooling may make a parent spend more than the normal education program and even find it difficult to go extra mile from comfort zone to learn how homeschooling can be effective.
Schools also have a few advantages though not as compared to homeschooling. Schools normally provide readymade opportunities for children to meet and play with children from different backgrounds, culture, and gender hence enhancing their development and discovery. Schools also have many facilities and resources including teaching aid tools, teachers, and equipment that may enhance their learning process. Schools have experienced personnel in matters of education and child development thus making it easy for them to impart appropriate knowledge to the children (Richards, Hull & Proctor 2012, pp. 45-56).
According to Richards, Hull & Proctor (2012) buying all the required tools for children may be expensive in homeschooling set up but schools have enough funds and resources that can be used in ensuring that education process is complete (63-72). Schools further provide safe environment for children to be cared for as parents pursue other careers hence allowing parents time to make enough income to care for their children. Parents taking their children to school do not take all their time teaching their children because there are teachers doing the work. Children further get education from qualified and experienced teachers who understand the program and variety of children whom they have had experience working with in the past.
However, all students are normally taught similar things at the same time regardless of their concentration. At times, this kind of system may not apply because some students may be bored while some may struggle to grasp what is taught (Hornby 2011, pp. 43-50). It may be hard to assume that all students taught in a classroom would uniformly understand what they are taught. Schools rarely provide the required support to students with learning disabilities. Children with learning disabilities may therefore be pushed back to parents as homework.
Schools further expose children to peer pressure, overexposure, and other counter-productive activities because of availability of variety of students from different cultures (Richards, Hull & Proctor 2012, pp. 72-84). Little time is also given for experimentation and the learning process is not self-directed. Self-motivation is also not encouraged and mostly punishment and grades are used to keep children in line and disciplined. In general, homeschooling is better than taking a child to school as far as child development issues are concerned.

Home Protection, What You Should Know
Home Protection, What You Should Know
Abstract
Introduction
I have selected home protection as my area of research. This is an important research since the home security issues have been on the rise in the United States. Burglary is the most common type of risk that faces many homes in the United States. A burglar breaks into a home in the United States every 15 seconds and does away with goods worth $1,725. This also robs the peace of mind of the residents who have been robbed (Lyon, 2013). This paper aims at discussing the various ways of enhancing home security. The various ways to protect and prevent homes from invasions will be discussed.
Discussion
Home protection is amongst the major concerns in the United States. The most common risk in such settings is burglary. There are several measures that people need to put in order to mitigate the chances of their homes being a target for robbers. Different authors have different opinions on what people should implement in their house security systems in the bid to reduce the risk. I have selected three articles that discuss the issue of home protection. The opinions of different authors are discussed below;
“Home security” by Chris E MacGoeyThis author critically analyses several ways of enhancing home security. He sets out measures that people should use to secure their homes and themselves when in the home compound. The following are some of the factors that he cites.
Locking the doors at all times is the first measure that the author recommends. He argues that a burglar will bypass a home that needs too much skill to enter. Garage and backdoors are the target zones for buglers. They know that these two points are the weakest to use when accessing the house. These doors should be fitted with grade 1 or grade 2 locks. This will resist twisting, prying, and lock-picking attempts (MacGoey, 2013)
The author of this article also cites windows as an issue of concern in homes. He says that structure of windows has the ability to attract burglars. He recommends windows should be fitted with extra blocking materials such as wood since they do not have locks.
The author explains the importance of safes in homes. He adds that the safes should be used to store valuables in homes. Jewelry and important documents should be kept in these safes.
Lighting and alarm systems are other things that the author mentions. He suggests that homes should be well lit especially at night. He sets out that darkness is a signal to burglars that tells them that the owner is not in. This increases the vulnerability of such homes. The author of this article also suggests the installation of visible alarms in homes. He says that burglars will bypass the homes with such alarms because of the fear of getting caught by the police when the alarm gets on.
“Top 5 Home Security Tips” by Julia Layton
The author of this article discusses the risk factors in homes. She explains the various issues that need to be checked in effecting home security. Her perception on the issue is discussed below.
Locking up the house is the first measure pointed out as necessary in her article. Locking the house with quality locks is essential in keeping the thieves away. She says that a good lock can prevent a burglar from gaining access of the doors even in the absentia of the owner.
Lighting the house at night is the second concern in her article. The compound should be well lit and more so the hiding spots at night. In the bid to save energy, motion detector lightings should be fitted outdoors. This will scare away any intruder (Layton, 2013).
Layton also advises people to be original when handing security issues at home. She spots out that burying the key in the mud or at the door step should be discouraged. If the key must be hidden, the person hiding it should be creative. She advises that if the friends guess the hiding place, it should be changed at once. She however advocates on carrying the key when the person is leaving home.
In the conclusion of her article, she warns people against broadcasting their location and advices on installing alarm systems in the house. Broadcasting where one is on social media like Twitter and Facebook makes the home a target place for burglars. People should avoid this as it makes their homes vulnerable. She also advises on installing the alarm devices. She says that if the thieves know that the house is installed with such systems, they would dare not attempt the robbery. The article emphasizes the importance of the alarm being obvious. The author says that if the alarm is obvious, the burglary risk would be low.
“Ways to Protect Yourself From a Home Invasion” by Joe Pappalardo and Chad Hunt.
These two authors focus on the seven major things that can protect homes from invasion. These factors are discussed below.
The authors of this article propose the use of doorbells. They argue that this can make the thief shy away. The article also suggests that homes should have a safe room. These rooms should be used in times of dangers to shield oneself from intruders. They also suggest that windows should always be locked when the owners are not at home and thorns should be planted around windows. These thorns can collect DNA from blood and skin of the intruder. This can aid in forensics when determining the invader (Pappalardo & Hunt, 2013).
These authors point out the importance of knowing the law of the land when dealing with trespassers at home. Laws differ from state to state. In New Jersey, one is allowed to shoot a trespasser only if there is no route of escaping and when life is threatened. In Ohio, one is allowed by the law to shoot a trespasser for just being on one’s property (Pappalardo & Hunt, 2013).
Comparison of the article views on home protection
The three articles have similarities and differences on the issue of home security. They however have a common goal, identifying the risk factors in homes and coming up with ways to mitigate them.
A common issue addressed by these articles is locking of doors. The doors are viewed as the most important security measure in homes. They propose the use of quality locks in the prevention of burglary.
The installation of alarms is also another factor that is discussed in the articles. Alarms are portrayed as a discouraging factor to intruders. The articles argue that the intruders fear being caught by the police and would therefore not attempt stealing from such homes. Placing the alarms in strategic points is also brought out as an advantage by these authors.
These articles differ on safe rooms. Chris E MacGoey suggests that home safes should be availed in homes for storing valuables while Joe Pappalardo and Chad Hunt’s article emphasizes on safe rooms where people can actually hide during danger.
Joe Pappalardo and Chad Hunt’s article support the shooting of intruders. This is not right and should never be done. Every person has a right to life and shooting them denies them the right. It is wrong to take someone’s life. Retaliation from the gang of intruders can come back and wreak havoc in homes where one of their own was shot. It is advisable to call for help in cases of home invasion.
Alignment of these readings with the textbook
These readings concentrate on identifying the vulnerability of homesteads, assessing the risks in these homes and coming up with measures to mitigate the risks. This is in alignment with chapter five text books- vulnerability assessments.
Chapter five of the textbook is about the vulnerability assessment. Vulnerability assessments are aimed at identifying the threats and coming up with counter measures to reduce these risks (Vellani, 2007, p. 90). These articles analyses the various burglaries as the major vulnerability in homes. Several ways like locking up the doors and installing the alarm systems are suggested. There are other means that the authors have suggested that can reduce the vulnerability of homes. Failure to broadcast on the whereabouts and setting up the alarm systems are also factors mentioned in the articles which can mitigate the risk.
Recommendations on home protection
The above readings have shown that burglary is the biggest risk that faces homes. I have discovered that the ways to counter this risk is to beef up entry security homes. I have also discovered that locking the doors and installing an alarm system in homes plays a major role in dealing with burglary.
I would recommend that my classmates be good neighbors. Good neighborhood can assist in surveillance of each other’s home in absentia. This will deal with burglary that occurs especially when people are away from their homes. .
Conclusion
Home is a place where one is supposed to feel safe and free. The security of homes should always be kept tight in or absence of the owners. The above issues are the ways to mitigate the threats that can take place in homes. I believe that if people follow the above methods, then homes will be well protected.
The twentieth century has seen great changes with the introduction of technology. There are various technological changes that have taken place and had not been experienced before. They are such as invention of computers, mobile devices among others. The computer technology had the greatest impact among the population. They have made communication efficient and convenient throughout the globe. The advantages that we accrue from the computer technology are numerous. The greatest contribution of the century came along with the computers rendering the opportunity for people to invent and come up with other forms of technology that were not experienced in the past. This technological discovery remains the most advanced among other innovations of the century.
