Stereotyping the Followers of Islam

Stereotyping the Followers of Islam

The movie, Not Without My Daughter, begins when the family of Mahmoody, Mahtob, and Betty were visiting with the grandparents of Mahtob. Mahmoody, who is Muslim, decides to take his young family to Iran. He swears on the sacred Coran that nothing bad will happen to them. As it turns out, Iran had just finished their revolution and had gone back to the old ways, when women have minimal rights. Mahmoody decides to stay in Iran with his family and Betty can’t do anything about it, but Betty and her daughter Mahtob manage to get back to America.

Stereotyping: A minor fault of all people today. What is it? It is the common mistake all people make when they think that a certain minority is all the same just because they may have seen one of the members. One example of this is the movie, Not Without My Daughter. This movie has a repetitive tendency to portray all male Iranians as wife beaters. This may seem pretty blunt, but in a way, it pretty much summarizes the antagonist of the plot.

The video I compared to this is called Islam in America. It showed almost all aspects of the Muslim religion in America today. The differences between the two may be because of the seperate countries, and after viewing Islam in America, I think that some of the instances in Not Without My Daughter were a bit exaggerated.

One part of the movie that set me off, was when Betty was doing something that Moody didn’t like. He slapped her because she had disobeyed him. Is this realistic in the Muslim religion? Probably not. It might be in Iran, but probably not in the religion itself. One of the ideals of the Muslim religion is that all people, male or female, are created equal. The documentary on Islam in America supports this. Yet, a Hollywood production that most people in America as well as other countries watch, portrays the religion as the rationale to the wife beating. This, subconsciously or consciously, gives a message to the viewers that all Muslim men beat their wives, and that turns them away.

Another part of the movie that I didn’t take kindly to, was when Betty went to the American Interests department in the Swiss Embassy for help to get out of the country. Because of this Muslim country’s laws, they could not help Betty and her daughter though they wished they could. They also informed her that misfortunes like this happen all the time in Iran. This may also seem as though the Muslim religion itself is responsible, when once again it is the country and its government that is accountable. From watching the documentary, I have learned that Islam in America is different only by the fact that America is a free country, where women have the right to leave their husbands. People have the right to practice whatever religion they want to. Islam in America is also full of diverse people with different races, origins, and ideas; and not just one race that has descended from Abraham like the Jews and Hebrews believe.

One problem with this comparison is that the two videos are of different countries, so it is hard to say if one was stereotyping the followers of Islam. From this comparison it is easy to see that the laws greatly effect what people perceive the laws of a religion to be. In conclusion, I believe that in order to end stereotyping, we must first accept other people for who they are and not by what their culture portrays.

Stereotypes Regarding the Elderly in the Society

Most people preach that the elderly are no longer treated the same way they used to be treated back in the days. However, the same people are reluctant to change the situation as it gets worse every day. Age is a biological and social classification that human beings undergo. Therefore, the elderly should be respected for their contribution to societal roles such as the economy, education, and family.

There are stereotypes regarding the elderly in our society who don’t appreciate the roles the elderly played in making society a better place (Donizzetti, 2019). The following theories and aspects drive the stereotypes: Disengagement theory, this perspective does not acknowledge how vulnerable the elderly are considered in society. The double standard of aging, where men are judged according to their contribution to society while women are judged according to their beauty. Ageism is stereotyping of adults that may increase isolation and elderly abuse damaging the elderly’s self-concepts.

Modernization lowers older adults’ status because young people are given more opportunities to obtain education by offering student loans and having an advantage in the workplace. This creates negative tension between the elderly and the young, making them fight for space in society, not a good thing to watch. The recent technologies do not favor the elderly since most workplaces rely on these technologies to run their business. Most elderly have no experience in this machinery. Therefore, they have no space in such offices or firms.

Stereotypes about the elderly have been pervasive in culture and it has influenced how adults look at themselves. Aging is a complex process, but still, it has been stereotyped. There is a significant role in shaping how people think the stereotype is employed in a particular group. A stereotype can be positive as well as neutral and it has changed with time. Nevertheless, stereotypes of the elderly are considered social constructs that can be culturally and historically situated. Comparatively, stereotypes of the elderly can potentially reinforce ageism (Sarabia-Cobo & Pfeiffer, 2015). It is significant to acknowledge that the elderly won’t respond to stereotypes as a single entity.

These stereotypes can be changed by creating an environment favorable for both the young and the old not to fight each other. The elderly population keeps growing, and there should be more elderly homes built and encourage and educate young people to volunteer in helping them. This will create a bond between the two and making the elderly feel accepted in society.

Steps To Successful ATM Withdrawal

Steps To Successful ATM Withdrawal

Introduction

When transacting cash from the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM), the user has to follow various steps. These steps to successful ATM withdrawal include; Insertion of the debit card, Selection of the language to be used, Entering of the Person Identification number (PIN), Selecting the Withdrawal option, Selection of the account of transaction, selecting the amount of cash, and lastly is taking of the cash. Transaction can only take place if the ATM has successfully undergone the above named steps. Below are various sets of instruction on how the customers can use ATM to withdraw their cash.

ATM withdrawal

Customer

Inserts Card

ATM

The customer inserts his/her ATM card into the designated card reader slot of the machine. The card should face the right way when inserting it into the machine. The ATM then pulls the card inside the machine to read the magnetic stripe to identify the user. The card will only be valid if the magnetic stripe can read the users’ card and if invalid the card is ejected and the session is then aborted.

Customer

Selects language

ATM

If the card can be read, the customer is asked by the ATM to select the language to be used and there are various options to be chosen such as English, French and many others.

Customer

Enters PIN

ATM

The user then enters the personal identification number (PIN), the PIN should have at least four digits.

If a wrong pin is entered by the customer, the transaction get cancelled and the card is rejected by the machine and if the customer presses cancel instead of re-entering the PIN, the original transaction will automatically be cancelled. If a valid pin is entered, a menu of operation then pops up that allows the customer to perform transactions.

Customer

Selects“Withdraw”

ATM

The user the selects the “Withdraw” when an ATM has prompted him/her in choosing which transaction the user would like to make.

The withdrawal transaction then asks the user the type of the account he/she would like to withdraw from. The transaction can be cancelled by the user when the cancel key is pressed.

If the transaction is cancelled by the user, or fails because of repeated entries of a wrong PIN, a screen will then be displayed which informs the customer the reason for the transaction failure, and the customer will be given another chance of doing another transaction.

The user then selects the amount of cash to be withdrawn. Some banks impose their daily limits of cash to be withdrawn, it is therefore necessary for the customer to be aware of the withdrawal limits before withdrawing any cash using ATM.

ATM

Connected database

Bank

The ATM machine is then connected to the database of the bank so as to check whether the user or the customer has enough balance in the account for successful complete cash withdrawal.

The bank therefore approves the customers’ transaction and any steps that are needed to complete his/her transaction.

Customer

Collects cash

ATM

The user then takes the cash, the receipt and card when they come out of the ATM. After the transaction is all done, the customer is then asked whether he/she wishes to do another transaction. Some ATMs usually print the users’ receipt automatically, but if the ATM prompts the customer with an option of to print the receipt, the user then selects the option of his/her own choice. If the ATM prints the receipt automatically, the user should not throw it away from the ATM location.
