Sociology Discussion

Sociology Discussion

1.) The author suggests four aspects of using the “sociological perspective” to understand human society. In 5-7 sentences, answer the following:

Select one of the four aspects.

Gender

Provide a unique example different from the textbook.

This reflects one way in which social sciences like sociology are similar to natural sciences. All of them try to understand and study their subjects objectively and attempt to uncover the associations that create order in each world through observation that is controlled.

Explain how this aspect may be relevant to your life.

This aspect is essential because the society is firstly divided into two different genders: males and females. Each society and the relationships created between the members depend on the relations between the two genders. It is only after understanding the associations that one can understand how the society works.

2.) Imagine that you are going to do sociological research.

Describe the topic.

The topic could be the effects of a supported program of employment on psychosocial indicators for individuals with disabilities.

Describe the methodological approach you would use.

In such a research, the best methodological approach would be randomized experimental design. Explain why you selected your preferred approach.

This is because it is especially excellent in internal validity. It rules out such risks and threats as maturation, history, testing, mortality, instrumentation and interactions of selection.

The American Sociological Association has established a code of ethics for sociologists to adhere to.

Discuss which of the five principles you feel is the most important and state why.

Respect for the dignity, rights and diversity of all people. I think this is the most essential because this is one problem (discrimination and disregard of people’s rights) that the world has dealt with for centuries. Making sure that one of the key issues affecting most populations is addressed is the most essential thing.

From your perspective, describe what seems to be missing from the list that you feel is important for a sociologist.

Honesty. This is one of the most essential virtues that any researcher should have. It ensures validity and increases people’s trust.

Please respond to the following:

Explain how the various agents work together to socialize today’s adolescents compared to the socialization of your grandparents or parents.

The current agents try to identify with the adolescents by attempting to see and understand how they live and acknowledge it as their choice. Our parents and grandparents did not do this, they followed the rule they know it all and stood by their decisions without listening to what adolescents have to say.

Imagine how the next generation might answer this same question.

It is feasible that the subsequent cohort will be freer with the adolescents sharing similar opinions and views. It is also possible they will have more knowledge of how to deal with adolescents than today’s parents because of increased advancement in skills and knowledge.

2.) A status is a recognized social position that an individual occupies. People occupy many statuses at the same time. Each status has a role associated with it. A role is the behavior and attitudes expected of someone who occupies a particular status. Discuss your current ascribed and achieved status set.

My achieved status is a student. I have earned or achieved this position because I worked hard in high school and the previous classes to get a qualification that guaranteed me a position in college. On the other hand, I am ascribed to be someone’s child. My ascribed status, therefore, is someone’s child. I was given this status at birth because I was delivered to my parents. It is a status that I did not choose or earn but assigned.

Identify your statuses that operate as a master status. If you have no master status, state what will have to change for you to hold a master status.

The statuses that operate as my master statuses include that I am a child of my parents, my sex, my age, education and even sexual orientation

Describe the role expectations of your statuses.

There are different roles I hold because of my statuses. For my achieved status, I others expect me to finish college and get a degree after which I should secure a well- paying job. For my ascribed status, the society expects me to remain respectful to my parents and to take care of them. For my master statuses, the society expects me, for example, to find a life mate to spend the rest of my life with and to do well in education and ultimately life.

Please respond to the following:

From the first e-Activity article, discuss whether you agree or disagree with the article’s premise that the media portrays women as sexual objects. Describe the boundaries you think that the media should adhere to when it comes to issues of sexuality.  It is true that the media portrays women as objects of desire and sex. I think that the media should enact some boundaries when it comes to sexuality. For example, there is no necessity to introduce a woman’s sexuality when advertising things like cars, houses, seats, beds and other commodities. There is also no need for the media to always show naked women to increase the number of viewers and ratings.

From the second e-Activity, identify any items from the list that you feel are not a violation of a social norm and propose items that you would add to the list and state why.

Order food that is not on the menu

Say hello to everyone

Ask for some toilet paper

Eat steak using a spoon and knife

There are things that should be on the list like wearing provocative clothes and littering

 Explain who is responsible for establishing what is, and is not, considered deviant behavior.

Everyone has his or her opinion of what is supposed to be categorized as deviant and what is not. Therefore, this responsibility should be left with a central figure of authority like the police department

Discuss how different societies and technological factors influence how aging is viewed. Analyze how the issue of aging is approached by the three major sociological paradigms. Identify which you agree with most and state why.

Aging is viewed in different societies according to the definition of age in that society. I agree with the conflict sociological paradigm the most because it is the best paradigm to explain conflicts in society like age.

The author of the textbook indicates that capitalism and socialism represent two ends of a continuum in which all real-world economies can be located. In addition, most experts agree that capitalism is more productive and socialism generates more social equality. Describe what you think would be the best-combined features of the economic systems of capitalism and socialism while minimizing the disadvantages of each. Explain your answer.

The best combinations would include elements of equality and elements of economic growth because the combination of these two would ensure a happy and well provided for system.

The Information Age has increased the use of computers and other new information technology. Discuss how computers are changing the workplace and how new technology both serves and harms workers. Support your position with evidence or examples.

It is true that technology helps and harms workers because it replaces them, thus, harming them and also makes work easy, therefore, benefiting them.

Discuss which of the four approaches to peace you think is best in reducing the danger of war. Provide a rationale to your answer.  Determine whether political apathy is due to indifference or alienation.

World power is the best approach to peace because it requires everyone to follow designated law. Political apathy is because of indifference.

2.) From the e-Activity article, discuss whether you believe the traditional family should be preserved. Give support to your answer.  No, it should not because it will limit change, which is necessary for the future.

In today’s modern society, identify what you view as the most important problems facing families in the U.S.

Recession and low employment opportunities are some of the most crucial problems.

 Symbolic Interactionist Assessment – Identity

Conventional gestures can be defined as the movements we make, for instance, shaking hands and waving hello, which are part of a learned, shared, symbolic system. A gesture is a practice of non-verbal communication whereby observable or visible physical movements communicate certain messages. Conventional gestures promote overall communication development and provide individuals with a way to express them none verbally (Wolf et al., 2017). Conventional gestures let people communicate a variation of thoughts and feelings, from disdain and aggression to sanction and affection, normally together with body language as well as to words when they talk. Speech and gesticulation function independently of each other but connect to give meaning and emphasis. Conventional gestures are very important to social organization. Body language and hand gestures have different meanings according to different cultures. Being familiar is very significant for communicating in politics and in business. It can help someone avoid using a particular gesture when a culture is new to him to avoid offending the host or guest. Social organizations can cause a change in society and aid in stabilizing society. Social interactions happen in societies all over the universe. The main common practices of social organization are cooperation, competition, exchange, accommodation, and conflict.

Coordinating meaning is the organized arrangement of a group and individual efforts to offer a unity of action to chase a common objective. In an association or group, all the individuals ought to function in an integrated way so that the association objectives are appropriately attained. On the other hand, coordination is also the organization that makes sure dissimilar groups and departments work in sync. Consequently, there is function of action among the groups, departments, and individuals (Mylan & Southerton, 2018). It’s the major function of management. It entails individuals or groups so that they can work together well and properly. In sociology, the role is the behavior expected of a person who occupies a particular social status or position. A role is an all-inclusive pattern of socially identified behavior, giving a way of recognizing and placing a person in a society.

Social culture is the mode of life of a group of individuals. Social life appears to be organized in a certain way. Identity signifies identifying who you are. Culture and social activity are often related, but they ought not to be perceived precisely as the same idea. Identity is a historically and socially built concept. We learn about the identity of others and our own identity by interactions with peers, media, family, organizations, and other links we make in our everyday life. Together, the diverse roles an individual plays can aid him to recognize his general identity. Social identity may give individuals a framework for socializing, a sense of self-esteem, and impact their behavior (Flanigan & Kash, 2020). In addition to how someone views himself, social identity also affects how other individuals treat someone. Social identity permits individuals to be part of groups and get a sense of fitting in their social world. The identities play a significant part in shaping self-image. Social identification is vital since it impacts how individuals perceive themselves and in what way they interconnect and interact with others. The social identity concept is constructed on three main cognitive components: social comparison, social categorization, and social identification. Normally, people desire to uphold an optimistic social identity by upholding their group’s auspicious social standing compared to that of applicable out-groups.

Sociology 295 Urban Sociology

Sociology 295: Urban Sociology

Lab Assignment #2: The Impact of Residential Segregation

Segregation is an enduring feature of our urban landscape. In the words of the great Chicago writer and artist Eve Ewing, “there is no segregation fairy;” segregation is built and maintained by macrostructural forces and by the choices we make in our everyday lives. In this lab assignment, you will analyze racial and economic segregation in a city (from the list below) using data from the Racial Dot Map, an on-line map of segregation in the U.S, and an interactive tool on economic segregation.

Data Sources:

http://demographics.coopercenter.org/racial-dot-map/Go to: Access map, and then add map labels in the upper left hand corner of map.

(If you are unfamiliar with the city you choose, you may want to google another map of the city to familiarize yourself with its boundaries.)

http://www.pewsocialtrends.org/income-segregationPotential cities:

Los Angeles, CA

Philadelphia, PA

Atlanta, GA

Chicago, IL

Your essay should address the following questions (in analytic/narrative form):

Using the Racial Dot map, describe patterns in the segregation of different groups by race in your chosen city. At what spatial level (neighborhood, city, suburb) do you observe racial segregation? How does racial segregation in the boundaries of city compare to racial segregation outside the city? Drawing on class readings, explain what might account for these patterns, and any differences across these patterns, in racial segregation.

Using Pew’s interactive tool linked above, describe patterns of economic segregation in your chosen city. At what spatial level (neighborhood, city, suburb) do you observe economic segregation? How does economic segregation in the city compare to economic segregation outside the city?

Compare the patterns in economic and racial segregation you identified in your city. (Hint: Are they 1:1 or is it more complex? Is racial segregation nested within economic segregation? Or the other way around?) Drawing on our readings on segregation, employment, and joblessness, explain whether you feel race or economic status is a greater organizing factor in your chosen city. If you feel it is too difficult to disentangle them, provide an explanation for why using class readings. Ground your discussion of these reasons in the specific context of your chosen city (for examples, its history, economy, industry, culture, etc).

This is an analytical paper (3-5 pages types, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins, double-spaced, stapled!). You must draw on academic theories and resources, and provide the appropriate references. Be sure to cite the map appropriately. Your essay should have a strong introduction, claims and supporting evidence, and a conclusion.

A hardcopy of the assignment is due on Tuesday November 7th, 2017, at the beginning of class. Papers sent over e-mail will not be accepted! Papers submitted late will receive a 1/3 letter grade deduction for each day the assignment is late (e.g. an A paper submitted one day late will receive an A-, two days late, a B+, and so on).
