Recent orders
the most important thing about the presidency was the expansion of the American territory by allowing it to touch both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Merry notes that at the beginning of his presidency in 1845
the United States territory encompassed 1.7 million square miles and barely reaching the Rocky Mountains. The territory increased by 70 percent under his reign. Consequently
he uniquely shaped the face of the United States presidency of the time. Additionally
he was against forming any political alliances that would endanger loyalty. Polk was a man of his words. Most significantly
he stated plainly that he would only govern for only one term. His cabinet was also surprisingly devoid of many people who had presidential ambitions in their hearts. He sought to quicken the hearts of the Democrats while appealing to the fears that the Whigs harbored. He vowed not to surpass the powers as enshrined in the constitution. He pledged that he would not assume powers that were not expressly granted to him by the constitution of the United States. Being a fighter
he vowed to fight back any threats that were directed to the union. Military intervention would cognitively fight any attempts to dissolve the Union.
