Diversity is of recent phenomenon in the US

Introduction:

Diversity is of recent phenomenon in the US. A country where immigrant issues are very worrisome, the country has become a place where people of diverse races have found a home for themselves. The growing diversity in America’s population has pervaded to all states. The high levels of immigrant population in South Carolina to Hispanic population in Arkansas, minority population is now making up an increasing share of the population. This has resulted in an great explosion of diversity all over the country. The census bureau is a witness to this and data increasingly reveal their growing diversity of the US population. It is diversity and immigration going hand in hand.”( William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution)

What information about diversity in the United States has helped you better understand or relate to others in ways that you may not have in the past?

The census statistics as given by the bureau and department of immigration statistics provided by the federal government and the respective state governments help one in understanding the concept of diversity better. These statistics reveal that immigration population is on the increase and the mix if the diverse races is very obvious in states where policies of diverse cultures is accepted. It was very difficult to even think of diversity if there were no statistics and data to prove the same. In the past diversity was just an accepted norm in the USA but with the growing numbers of diverse races and population, the figures related make it very important for people to understand the radical changes that have been occurring in the makeup of the US population and how the authorities have taken steps to accommodate the racial and ethnic groups into the various government programs makes it very interesting to understand the cultural and social shits in the country.

Have you learned something new about your own racial, ethnic, or cultural history? The cultural history of the US which has always fostered an atmosphere of accommodativeness. With more and more races being accepted as a part of the American acceptance into society, the cultural mixes have undergone major changes with sub cultures becoming very prominent. I have learnt that the racial and ethnic groups have been slowly absorbed by the mainstream population and it is very important for one to understand his own racial heritage along with the ethnic status of one’s ancestry. This can then help in understanding the nature of one’s one self and how his status can be determined in society.

Trends in immigration will continue to shape the demographics of the United States. What will the U.S. population look like in the year 2050? Why do you think so?

According to the projections given by the population census bureau it is expected by at by 2050 America will not have a clear majority race. By 2050 it is expected that majority of the population in the USA will be Non white. The Asian and the Latino population is expected to triple while Hispanic population will continue to grow in the same rate. What is particularly notable is the growth in the Asian population. The following graph illustrates the fact well.

What challenges does the United States face due to the diversity of its people? The diverse population base of the USA has led to many cultural and related issues. The sub cultures that has arisen due to the diverse population has led to a cultural shift in traditional and led a concept of multiculturalism and cultural pluralism which is not only difficult to handle and understand but also difficult for authorities to streamline and policy and reforms have to be based on this language identity has become a very great challenge the concept of unification of the people and types which is very much necessary looks to be a difficult one. There are many other issues like cultural identity issues, representation at parliament, ethnic divides are all some of the challenges that could arise out of a diverse population. Crime rates could also become a very critical issue as many ethnic groups may resort to such identity factors. Education, gender inadequacies, poverty are major social issues associated with a diverse population.

What are the benefits of such a diverse society? A diverse society brings in many unequivocal advantages to the country. The fostering of cultural adaptiveness and equality is found to be the greatest asset in a country which is diverse. This is a harbinger of a new acceptance order where there is no discrimination on any basis and everyone is considered equal. Racial segregation is done away with. It bestows equality of opportunity to all. It brings in a new order of thinking in the society. People learn to accept different thoughts and cultures and also a new wave of population which does not hate or fear is conceived. Diversity leads to knowledge of the new worlds and also a leads to lifelong learning of new ideas, countries and societies.

How can we foster a climate of acceptance and cultural pluralism in the United States?

The government has accepted diversity in its full form with all vagaries being accepted into mainstream life of the people. The government has also been advocating the formula of accepting this diversity and harboring its very religiously to be a part of the oneness of the country. Acceptance can be made possible only when everyone is equal before the constitution and before the law. There should be no separatist powers or no distinction or discrimination practiced. This can be done only if laws for abolishing discrimination are passed. Hence the ideas of acceptance should be promoted at all levels and representation of different ethnic and racial groups should be made in the parliament and in other governing bodies. Cultural pluralism can also be accepted only if the different ethnic groups have the right to exist in their own terms and are allowed to practice and preserve their cultural heritages. It is found that the Americans vouch that the presence of the different ethnic groups has enriched their heritage and society and has also enriched the Americans arts, way of life, cuisine, education, music history and in many other aspects.

In what ways do the media perpetuate stereotyping and prejudice? Provide examples to support your assertion.

The media has continuously been bringing to headlines problems associated with the immigrants and ethnic races. The stereotyping effect has been clearly seen in all media reports. They make sure that such issues are brought ot the forte the ills of the diverse population and this has led to prejudice among the people regarding certain races and hence this has led to widespread non acceptance of this group. It has been seen that the Mexican immigrants have been labeled as trouble mongers in those places where they work and hence apprehension towards employing Mexican in workplace.

In what ways do the media help foster appreciation for diversity? Provide examples to support your assertion. The media appreciates that everyone in America is able to live together as one society and hence it is very important that oneness has to felt and accepted. The media can improve the cultural mindset of the society diversity. It will also help people to understand the ethos of others and this will lead to unification of actions and help people to relate to each other cohesively. It also enables people to relate to each other with openness. It removes prejudices in people mind and creates the much needed bonding that is necessary .training programs bring people together to discuss and learn new ideas of living together. Such programs will prevent people from stereotyping themselves into their existing mindset and open out new horizons for better understanding

How might individuals and the United States work together to reduce prejudice and increase appreciation for diversity?

People in the united states have to come together and have a shared vision with regard to their racial and ethnic status and understand that the nation and community which has nurtured them and allowed them to grow safely is what is more important than their social and cultural identity and hence they owe their allegiance to that country. This country has also allowed sub cultures to exist independently with no sort of threat. This is also another reason why people should work together to reduce prejudice and allow for appreciation for diversity.

How might you change your own behaviors to be more inclusive and pluralistic? I have to cultivate tolerance and acceptance that everyone is equal and all of us have been given an opportunity to live in this great country and hence practice inclusion and be pluralistic and try to spread the message around.

Diversity in work place kirubi.

The workplace is a very interesting place to be. Apart from earning a living there, it is also like a second home to the employees. In fact, most people spend more time at work than at home. However, the people at the workplace may not be like you. Contrary to your family, with which you share a lot of things, there is usually nothing in common between you and your colleagues apart from the fact that you may be having more or else the same knowledge in that particular professional field.

Diversity in the workplace is a relatively new concept that organizations are incorporating nowadays. Companies are now taking into consideration the diversity of their employees when employing their staff. This idea has now been adopted by many corporations today in their quest to provide the best services. The concept here is that people from different backgrounds are employed in an organization. The idea is that these people will bring into the organization different qualities from wherever they come. HYPERLINK “http://ezinearticles.com/?Diversity-in-the-Workplace:-Benefits,-Challenges-and-Solutions&id=11053″http://ezinearticles.com/?Diversity-in-the-Workplace:-Benefits,-Challenges-and-Solutions&id=11053

In this case, the diversity we are talking about is the employing of people from different race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age, competency, experience, training, physical appearance, disabilities, nationality, cultural background and other personal attributes. These are just but the major aspects that diversity entails. A good company should strive to consider all these factors and ensure that it has balanced its staff.

Diversity at the workplace is a very good thing. It brings with it many advantages that the company can benefit from. Employees from diverse backgrounds are an asset to the company. The company should realize this and try as much as possible to bring out the best out of their employees. The company should provide its employees with an avenue to be fruitful. In other words, the company should not hinder the realization of the potential that diverse employees have.

Employees who have different upbringing and training definitely have different views from each other. It is obvious that people who come from different areas and who have different beliefs will view life at different angles. This perception held by the employees is the very thing that can be beneficial to the company. Therefore, it is the duty of the company management to create ways in which these different feelings can be brought out.

It is very important to have a workforce that is of varied ages. A company that has a large age difference amongst its employees is far much better than one which has employees of the same age bracket. There is a lot of good that comes out when there are older and younger people in an organization. Having older employees means that they have more job experience. Experienced workers will definitely contribute largely to the mentoring of the younger employees.

Notwithstanding is the fact that older employees can make better supervisors. In an organization that has various departments, it is better for the older generation of workers to be given some managerial positions such as supervisors. They are more knowledgeable in the running of the departments and should a problem arise, they will be better placed to make the right decisions owing to the fact that they have a lot of experience.

Also, a company that has employees who have different ages will have better levels of understanding and cooperation. It will be highly unlikely for the employees to fight each other. An older man will be difficult to argue with leave alone insult. Otherwise, in a company that has employees of the same age, there is a high possibility that there will be a lot of friction among the workers. This will be caused mainly by the fact that same-age employees will find it difficult to respect a fellow age-mate who is giving the orders.

When young employees are put together, there is the spirit of competition. Each worker wants to be the best. As a result, they start to bring each other down. At the very slightest opportunity, an employee would put blame on another in order to discredit him or her. Even when competition is good, such behavior will bring down the company and cause it to make losses.

The age aspect cannot be overemphasized. A company that has invested in various ages in its employees is able to cater to a clientele of different ages. Since there are workers of all ages in that company, it would not be hard to assist the various clients. The older staff will be able to identify with the customers who are senior citizens.

In the same light, young employees will be able to interact freely with the younger generation of clients. There is a way in which age mates connect with each other in a free way. As far as professionalism is concerned, a customer-staff relationship of people of the same age is highly advisable. The two can be able to influence each other and reach a consensus. Young workers can easily convince young clients in purchasing a product because they will use a language that is convenient for them.

Young and old employees have different views of the society. Their opinions should be considered greatly when decisions are being made. When a company is rolling out a new product, there is need to incorporate the views of all the staff members. In order for the product to be appreciated by all, the various aspects of age difference need to be factored in.

A universal product should be able to accommodate the needs of all the age groups. It is by considering the views of all the employees that such a success would be achieved. On the other hand, a company that has employees with varied ages can roll out products and services that cater for all the ages. They will not be restricted to one age group since the company has workers of various ages. As a result, the company will be able to make more sales out of the different products that cut across the various generations.

Another important aspect of diversity in the workplace is the various races that can be found in a company. The world now has reached a point whereby no single race can be found living on its own. People from different places have moved in to mingle with people from other races making the population of a place to have diverse races. The diverse people are educated and well trained thus they should be given equal opportunity in the job market.

As a result, many companies are hiring people from different races as long as they are qualified. Consequently, these diverse races prove to be an asset to the company in several ways. First of all, these people have different beliefs depending on where they come from. Their perspective is important in the company’s policy making. They can positively influence the outcome of an initiative if their insight is sought.

There is a certain perception that a company receives for having employed people of various races. It gives the company an international outlook. This is very good for the company. It gives the impression that that company is open minded and it can cater for the clients different needs. I honestly believe that such a company will have more publicity, something which is good for the company.

Employees from various races indirectly will attract more clients to the company. It might not be obvious but to a large extent clients will be more comfortable with a company that has many races than one which only has a single race. This is because clients will be attracted by the presence of one of their own and this will cause them to take their business there.

When it comes to policy matters, the presence of various races can come up with decisions that favor all the customers. Whether Hispanic, Caucasian, Arabic, Black or Hindu, these races are found all over the world and therefore policies should be made in such a way that they cover all these races. It therefore vital for a company to have these employees guide them on what is acceptable and what is taboo.

When a client comes to the company, some of whom have not obtained formal education, it is always convenient for the employee of the similar race to attend to him or her. This gives the staff a chance to interact better with the client. There could be instances when the customer needs to be explanation to be done in their native language. This would only be possible when you have a client of a similar race to the client. http://www.zeromillion.com/econ/workplace-diversity.html

Though race and culture are closely related, they can be separated into two different entities. This is because you can have a single race that has many cultures. Culture is a people’s way of doing things. Culture dictates the roles that need to be played by each member of the society. More importantly is the fact that culture dictates how things should be done in a specific setting.

When this phenomenon is present at the workplace, there is definitely going to be a lot of friction. However, on a positive note, multiculturalism can play a major role in the growth and development of staff. Employees can learn from each other and by so doing they will be able to identify what can be incorporated in their jobs. When different cultures come together, there is a lot of beauty. This beauty in diversity can be harnessed to bring out something wonderful in the job market.

No doubt that a company which is multicultural will have more ideas to choose from. This will make the company more diverse in its products and make it reach a wide market. The company will in turn make a lot of profits thanks to its employees. All the credit will go to the employees for having worked together. For example, if there is a promotion of a new product that has been introduced into the market and is targeted at a specific people, culture can play a major role in attracting that particular market. The product may be fashioned in such a way that it has features that are appealing to the target market and as a result, the product sells. This will be attributed to the input of the employee from that culture.

Moreover, a company that has different races in their workforce is likely to have new ideas that are fresh and creative. With all the diversity in the company, no doubt that the ideas presented will be very interesting. When put together and implemented, these ideas can come out as big innovations that can catapult the company to its success. HYPERLINK “http://ezinearticles.com/?Diversity-in-the-Workplace:-Benefits,-Challenges-and-Solutions&id=11053″http://ezinearticles.com/?Diversity-in-the-Workplace:-Benefits,-Challenges-and-Solutions&id=11053

Similarly, there is an advantage when a company employs male and female staff at a proportionate ratio. This is highly advantageous to the company as it will have a positive outlook. There are many instances when a customer has refused to be served in a one sex dominated company. A company that has both men and women has more credibility amongst the clientele. Customers can actually choose who they want to serve them.

Having both employees of both sexes will definitely attract the confidence of the public. No one wants to be associated with a chauvinistic firm. More so, there has been widespread campaign on equality between the sexes and a company that does not seem to take this into consideration risks to be alienated by the public.

It is not in doubt that female and male employees can keep you on toes. When these two groups work together, there is definitely the tendency to outshine the other group. In so doing there is good competition between the two groups, something that can promote the sales and profits of a company.

Ladies can be creative and thus their ideas should also be sought. Female employees can create a very good image of the company. When these ladies are smart and professional, they can use their charm to convince customers in purchasing the company’s products and services. Ladies have a very good way of talking and their persuasion is irresistible. Therefore it is only smart for a company to employ an equal number of male employees as female ones.

The sex diversity has been championed for in a long time. Before, there were professions that were meant for men and other for women. However, this trend has declined over the years with the ladies proving to be as smart, if not smarter, as their male counterparts. In this regard, a company is well placed if it employs both sexes in order to boost its creativity and innovation levels.

Sex diversity can lead to more sales. A company that has both male and female employees can make more profits. This can be made possible due to the fact that the female employees will attract other female customers. Ladies tend to support and encourage each other. So by having female staff, ladies out there will want to come support their fellow lady and consequently increase the business in that company.

For advertisement, there is a way that female employees can pull through at getting people to notice what they are selling. When a company wants to roll out a new product or promote an existing one, the attention that may be gotten by female employees can make the company reach its target faster. The public is mostly attracted when a female employee goes to market a particular product.

Apart from the diversity brought about by age, race culture and sex, there is another important aspect that needs to be considered when hiring employees. Religion. Religion is the belief of a supernatural being. This is a major aspect in the job market nowadays. Many people in the world are now affiliated to some faith or another. As a result, the employees that are hired will also belong to a certain faith.

Employees who are allied to a specific religion can come up with a product that is targeted to that particular faith. For example, employees who are Christians can develop a product that does not compromise the faith and of their belief in God and Jesus Christ. This product would then be marketed by these employees in their church gatherings and in the end, the product will sell as a result of the employees’ participation.

This means that if the various religions that are found in a company’s employees can be utilized, then there will be no group of believers who will not say that they have not been attended to. The same goes to atheists and the non-believers. Products that are not affiliated to any supernatural being can also be rolled out for them

Most importantly is the way these employees would be able to serve people from their own religions. This will make the customer feel very comfortable because their specific individual needs would be understood by members of their same faith.

To sum it all up, we have identified how diversity in the workplace is very important in the society, both the service providers and also to the receivers. A good workplace is where all this diversity is available and when the various different aspects are put together to have one large harmonious work environment.

However, it is not easy to reconcile all the differences that this diversification brings about. There needs to be a proper mechanism that will allow the personal growth of each employee and the realization of the potential that each employee carries.

The management of this diversity should be headed by somebody or a group of people who appreciate diversity. The management should be aware of the setback that such a diverse group can have. The major one being misunderstandings. The management should educate the employees about the various differences and how to tolerate them. http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/library/research/subjectguides/workplacediversity.html

In addition, these employees will take a lot of time to reach a consensus, due to their varied opinions. Therefore, the management should be able to settle their quarrels and make informed decisions based on the input of all the employees. This will be the best way to handle this diversification. Otherwise, diversity has a lot of benefits as discussed above and I strongly believe that companies should diversify their employees in order to have new and brilliant ideas.

Diversity in the Workplace

Introduction

The importance of profitability cannot be gainsaid as far as the long term sustainability or strength of an organization or business institution is concerned. However, it goes without saying that the profitability of an organization is always threatened by competition from other organizations within the same field or offering substitute goods and services. This has pushed organization to come up with various strategies through which they can enhance their competitiveness. Of course, there have been numerous strategies through which the organizations maintain or enhance their competitiveness. These may include expanding to other regions, marketing and expanding to other fields. Nevertheless, recent times have seen an increase or rise in the interest of organizations on workforce diversification as one of the ways in which organizations could increase their competitiveness. Diversity refers to the acknowledgement, acceptance, understanding, valuing, as well as a celebration of the differences that exist among individuals as concerning their age, ethnic backgrounds, social class, gender, sexual orientation, race, intellectual and physical aptitude, public assistance status and spiritual practice among other features. Workplace diversity not only encompass the ways in which individuals view themselves, but also their perceptions about other people. It goes without saying that the perceptions affect people’s interactions with other people. The effectiveness of the functioning of organizations with a wide variety of employees is pegged on the capacity of human resource professionals to deal effectively with matters such as adaptability, change and communication. Question, however, have arisen as to the effectiveness of diversity of the workforce in enhancing the competitiveness of organizations.

Thesis statement: Diversity enhances the competitiveness of an organization in its field, provided it is handled appropriately.

The competitiveness and success of an organization is pegged on its capacity to embrace diversity, as well as realize the benefits with which it comes. When business entities actively asses the manner in which they handle issues pertaining to workplace diversity, as well as establish and implement diversity plans, they experience a number of benefits. Diversity management may be composed of the development of affirmative action programs, provision of support to the minority group in the organization’s workforce, as well as resolution of employee conflicts on the basis of traits and characteristics that are not associated to the job. Small business enterprises may not have issues to do with workforce diversity, until such a time when the workforce grows to various employees from different cultures and with differences in their sexual orientations or age. However, forward-thinking companies acknowledge the incredible results that come with workforce diversity.

One of the key or fundamental benefits that come with diversity is the enhanced adaptability (Greenberg, 4). Scholars opine that organizations that employ a diverse workforce have the capacity to offer an enhanced variety of solutions pertaining to problems that the organization faces in sourcing, resource allocation, as well as service. It goes without saying that the capacity of an organization to come up with solutions that are applicable in different situations has a bearing on the sustainability of that organization, especially in the long term. Research shows that individuals who have diverse backgrounds incorporate different experiences and talents that would be applicable in diverse fields. This means that the organization would be flexible as far as adapting to the changing demands of customers and markets is concerned, which enhances its competitiveness.

In addition, diversity of employees or in the workplace comes as one of the ways of enhancing creativity within the organization (Ferrier, 2). This is because heterogeneous groups always cross-fertilize each other in the organization. It is worth noting that employees who have diverse backgrounds incorporate diverse solutions and ideas, which would be channeled towards the attainment of a single goal. As diverse ideas and solutions are suggested, there are enhanced chances of coming up with an effective and workable answer to a certain issue (Greenberg, 6). Research shows that, in environments where brainstorming is a necessity, an increased number of ideas are formed because the team members come from diverse cultural backgrounds. This is especially considering that individuals from diverse backgrounds will incorporate different ways of tackling a certain issue. Some institutions have effectively established processes of innovation through the incorporation of ideas from diverse backgrounds. A diverse workforce that is comfortable communicating different points of views offers a larger pool of experiences and ideas from which organizations may draw in an effort to meet its needs as far as a business strategy is concerned, as well as meet the demands of customers in an effective manner. This, ultimately, enhances the overall competitiveness of the organization or business entity both in the short term, as well as the long term.

Moreover, an organization that has a diverse workforce has a lot to reap from the diverse language skills. Companies and business entities that plan to expand to global markets can reap immensely from the language diversity incorporated in workforce derived from different backgrounds. This is especially considering that people from diverse backgrounds would offer enhanced insights into their backgrounds and even aid in setting base or expanding to those areas (Ferrier, 2). Expansion into other areas means that the company or business entity has a wider market, which means increased strength and competitiveness. This underlines the crucial role that workforce diversity would play in enhancing competitiveness of the company even on a global and international scale. Increased presence, more often than not, means that the company or business entity has a wider market and enhanced sales.

On the same note, a diverse workforce enables the company or business entity to offer a broader range of services. This is because the workers have a diverse set of experiences and skills that allow the company to offer services to clients on a global scale (Greenberg, 5). It goes without saying that the increased range of services or products for a company means increased stability and competitiveness. This, in fact, is what has propelled Coca-Cola Company to the global phenomenon that it is today. The company is known for its beverage Coke, which even though it is popular it does not fit every person’s tastes and preferences. In essence, the company maximized its market share by offering a broad range of soft drinks ranging from diet versions of coke to orange. This has enhanced the competitiveness of the company, not only in the native areas, but also on the global scale.

Lastly, a diverse workforce allows for efficient execution of its plans and strategies (Greenberg, 7). Business entities, that incorporate the concept of diversity in their workforce, have an automatic effect of inspiring their employees to do their best or put their best foot forward in the execution of plans. It goes without saying that the effectiveness of plans does not lie in making them, rather it is in the capacity to execute them effectively. In essence, the diverse workforce efficiently executes all the company’s strategies and plans. This leads in increased return on investment, higher revenue and enhanced productivity of the company. It goes without saying that these go a long way in enhancing the long term sustainability, as well as competitiveness of the business entity. It is also noteworthy that when a business entity embraces employees from diverse cultural backgrounds, skills and experiences, they enhance their capacity to understand the desires, needs, likes and preferences of their customers in different parts of the globe. This results in enhanced customer satisfaction, which increases the competitiveness of the company.

However, some people feel that diversity is detrimental to the success of a business entity. The key claim, in this case, is that employees get tired of persistently being reminded about their diversity. They also argue that in instances where diversity is the key concern, individuals who belong to the nonminority groups may feel as if they have been excluded or even that minority groups are being accorded preferential treatment (Mayhew et al, 4). However, it is worth noting that workforce diversity does not revolve around affirmative action or quotas. It fundamentally involves the conscious recognition of the fluctuations and modification in the face of the nation and the economy at large. It involves tapping into the different talents that come with individuals from diverse backgrounds and channeling them to the attainment of the company’s overall goal (Green, 11). In addition, workforce diversity involves the recognition of the fundamental value that comes with differences, the promotion of inclusiveness of all people, as well as combating discrimination (Green, 11). These would go a long way in enhancing the overall productivity and competitiveness of the business entity. It goes without saying that managers are challenged with losses in work productivity and personnel loss, thanks to discrimination, legal action and complaints against the organization (Green, 12). Negative behaviors and attitudes may hinder the competitiveness of an organization as they destroy the working relationship, lower the morale and reduce the work productivity. These attitudes may include stereotyping, prejudice, as well as discrimination, which the management should at no time use for hiring of workers, their retention, or even termination of services. It is worth noting that such practices also form ground for litigation and legal action against the company, which would impede its competitiveness. This underlines the importance of embracing diversity in the workplace as the ultimate strategy for enhancing the competitive edge of a business entity in the nation and international scale.

In conclusion, the profitability of any business entity is extremely crucial as far as the long term and short term stability and sustainability is concerned. However, the profitability of a business entity lies in the ability to wade off competition. Many companies have acknowledged the role of workforce diversity in enhancing the overall competitiveness of a business entity. Workforce diversity enhances the competitiveness of any business entity. It allows the company to have ideas and experiences from a wide pool of skills. This enhances the chances of coming up with a workable solution. In addition, it enhances the capacity of a company to diversify or expand to other parts of the globe, as well as increase its range of services. These come in handy in enhancing the competitiveness of a business entity. As much as some people may view diversity management as a way of excluding individuals from the majority groups, it is worth noting that diversity goes beyond acknowledgement and conscious recognition of the fluctuating and modifying face of the nation and the economy at large. It involves tapping into the different talents that come with individuals from diverse backgrounds and channeling them to the attainment of the company’s overall goal. In any case, the company would be severely disadvantaged in instances where it acts in another way as it creates an image that it promotes discrimination, thereby opening itself for litigation and inappropriate reputation.
