Introduction:
We are currently living through a pandemic. Look at how it has changed the world around us! How many of you have been to a concert, been on vacation, hugged a vulnerable relative (etc), without wondering about the ripple effects? Our economy has suffered, some of our favorite restaurants have closed, and people have had to learn to operate in different ways. Just look at your educational experiences of the past few years.
Historians in our modern period have asked people like you, and me, to write daily experiences about our lives under this pandemic so future generations can study them. Institutions all over the world are collecting primary source material from this pandemic so that it can be examined by future generations of scholars.
Some of the most important work done on past pandemics comes from the sources of the average person. Microhistories, or a close focus on a small story, provide insight that large records or statistics can miss. They can personalize an event or period of time. In this assignment, you will be creating a creative microhistory of a past pandemic. You have two options (see below). You have creative freedom with your characters, setting (location), and the way you approach the assignment. The parameters are below.
Assignment:
Explore the below infographic. Choose one of the historic pandemics that interests you (except for our modern Coronavirus, Spanish Flu of 1918-1919, and the Black Death 1347-1351). Please use Google and the CMSV Library website to research a little bit about your pandemic, and the historical context of the period it occurred in. • You must include a list of the sources/references you used to at the end of your work.
• You must include at least 1 scholarly source (book/journal article).
Option 1: Lost Letters/Diaries
• You will write 4 letters/diary entries (400-500 words each) from the point of view of your historical character. Please make sure that your entries touch on the following topics. The order and way you approach or explain the material is entirely up to you.
• What pandemic is your person living through? Has this changed their everyday, normal life? How?
• What are the symptoms/medical effects associated with the disease?
• What regulations (if any) have been put in place to keep the population safe? Are they effective?
• How has society, in general, been affected?
• Remember to include historically accurate details (about both time period and pandemic) to help the reader better understand the experience of your character.
• Write clearly (colloquially is fine), strive for creativity, and pay attention to formatting/sourcing.
Option 2: 5-Episode HBO Max Miniseries
• You’ve been asked to provide a written summary (250-350 words each) for each episode of your new HBO-max miniseries on your chosen pandemic. You are required to cover the following topics, but the order and way you approach the material is entirely up to you. Each “episode” should have a title.
• What pandemic is your miniseries focused on? What is the historical context?
• What are the symptoms/medical effects associated with the disease?
• How has society in general been affected?
• What regulations (if any) have been put in place to keep the population safe? Are they effective?
• How has the daily life of your character/s or plotline been affected? How?
• Remember to include historically accurate details (about both time period and pandemic) to help the reader better understand the experience of living through this disease.

Overview:

Throughout this semester, we have explored many different explanations for why someone might commit crimes, but what does this explanation look like in practice? Each of the theories covered in this class has the potential to speak to our current world. To practice the application of criminological theories, you will analyze a character from a film or television show that is engaged in criminal activity, applying the criminological theory you believe best explains the character’s behavior. You will also evaluate that theory’s effectiveness in explaining your character’s behavior. This assignment will require further research and reading about your chosen theory.

This paper is not a film review. Instead, it is a test of your ability to apply and evaluate the tenets of a criminological theory, and each film is a vehicle for discussing the tenets and practicality of that theory. Be sure to define specific tenets of the theory and describe how examples from the film illustrate the tenet you are discussing. Additionally, your paper should assume the reader has no knowledge of the film or television show discussed, so that anyone reading your paper can follow your argument and its application.

Instructions:

For this paper, choose a character from a movie or television show that engages in criminal activities. Evaluate this character’s behavior applying the criminological theory you believe best explains their behavior. You should choose one of the criminological theories listed below. Examples of films and television shows are also listed below, but you may choose outside of this list.

This paper should be a minimum of 3 full pages double-spaced (no maximum) plus references. Papers should be written in 12-point Times New Roman font. This paper should use relevant articles assigned in class and include two additional scholarly resources pertaining to your chosen theory. Please cite all references in APA formatting.

Below is a suggested format to use for your paper. You are not required to follow this format exactly, but you should be including the same information.

  1. Introduction (1 paragraph)
  2. Summary of the film (~1 page)
    1. Overview of the plot, the main character, and the crimes committed by the main character. This summary should assume I have no prior knowledge of this film.
  1. Application of criminological theory (~1pages)
    1. Identify a theory and provide a general overview of the theory.
    2. Explain the character’s behavior using this theory, providing specific examples from the film to support your explanation.
      1. What assumptions does this theory make, and as such, what assumptions are you making about your character?
      2. What concepts from this theory apply to your character? Use a minimum of three concepts.
  2. Evaluation of criminological theory (~1 pages)
    1. Make an argument for why this is the best theory to explain the character’s behavior.
      1. What are the strengths of using this theory to explain your character’s behavior? In general, what does this theory explain well?
      2. How have researchers evaluated similar behaviors from this theoretical perspective?

      1. What is a known limitation of this theory? Is this a limitation in this analysis? (How so or how not?)
      2. What elements of the character’s behavior or situation cannot be explained by the theory?
      3. What concepts from the theory are irrelevant to this character’s behavior?

This assignment is designed to familiarize the student with other cultures, world issues, international trade, international politics, and geography. Write a 5-page report on the expatriate experience that illustrates the issues that expatriates confront when tasked with an overseas assignment. Think about moving to a foreign country with your family. What issues would you have to resolve? Consider the necessity of inclusion related to language and cultural issues, family issues, education for the children, housing, banking, driving, and others.
