Explaining Crime Theories of Crime

This assignment is to be written in an essay format and requires you to use two of the theories/perspectives on the course in relation to a case study of an offence prosecuted in the NSW District Court.

You will need to critically analyse your case study in relation to the crime committed, the offender, victim, associated facts and penalty handed down.

You will need to choose ONE of the following case studies for analysis (also attached):

Your analysis of the case must draw on at least two of the theoretical perspectives we have covered in the course (E.G. LABELLING THEORY AND POSITIVISM), in order to show how they are at play or should be at play in the given case.

You are encouraged to think about how the different theories you have chosen can explain different elements of the case study. We are looking to see how well you can connect theory to real world cases.

You should also identify at least three relevant additional sources and draw on these in your analysis.

Remember, your markers have access to the cases so there is no need for detail on the facts of the case: keep any summary of the offence and the individuals involved brief.
