Compare and Contrast Compare or Contrast Essay
Choose two of the literary pieces from your assigned reading list of stories, poems, and plays.Your Lit Anthology suggests that you “…take care to select works that have enough in common to make such a comparison [or contrast] interesting and valid.” Choose works that are meaningful, articulate, and may resonate with you.
Choose to either compare or contrast several elements from each piece. For example, you may choose character, setting, tone or theme, etc. Alternatively, you may base your comparison/contrast on subjects such as culture and background, religion and worldview, or motivation and psychology.
Perhaps one way to organize your essay might be to choose three (3) different elements or areas listed above and cover each of those as a main point (adding up to three (3) body paragraphs). Remember to review Week 1’s lessons on thesis statements and paragraph construction.
Utilize your writing skills to organize your work, meet assignment criteria, and to create an interesting two-three(2-3) page essay for your reader.
Instructions:
Ensure that your essay follows MLA guidelines and has a well-developed opening paragraph that includes:
2 sentences that grab the interest of the reader
a couple of brief sentences that summarize the two (2) works you are comparing or contrasting.
One (1) sentence at the end of the paragraph that is your thesis.
Your paper should include three body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph.
Keep in mind, you are now writing academic essays, which are more formal and will avoid second person pronouns (you/yours). You should also practice writing in the more formal third person, avoiding first person references such as “I/me/my/we/us/our.”
Utilize MLA guidelines when heading your paper with your name, professor name, course title/number, and date. Make sure you have your pages numbered according to the guidelines.
MLA guidelines for an essay include 250 words per page. A 2-3 page essay should be 500-750 words. Do not include your Heading or Works Cited in your word count.
Refer to the rubric for grading criteria.
