Developing a Training Plan

Develop a training plan that includes a lesson plan in the form of an outline and a timeline.

Introduction

For this assessment, you will develop a training plan for your program, including a lesson plan outlining your selection of appropriate training methods for your learning objectives.

Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.

There are a number of effective, traditional methods used in training, including lectures, discussions, and audio-visual materials. Training methods have progressed rapidly in recent years as new generations of workers have entered the workforce, and newer training methods have evolved with the increased use of computers and the Internet.

To develop an effective training plan lesson, you should include:

  • A timeline for your training and development program.
  • Learning objectives.
  • Training methods.
  • Training activities.
  • Practice and feedback.

Preparation

Use the Effective Training textbook, the Internet, the Capella Library, or the Lesson Plan Template [DOC] to research training lesson plans and to select a format for this assessment.

For this assessment complete the following:

  • Identify each training activity and link the activity to the learning objectives used in the training and development program.
  • Describe how practice and feedback are incorporated into the lesson plan to measure the transfer of learning.

Training Program Design

Select a training topic, and develop a training needs analysis and learning objectives as part of your initial training and development program design.

Introduction

For this assessment, you will create the initial design of your training and development program for an organization of your choice, including the selection of a training topic, developing a working needs analysis, and identifying learning objectives.

Note: The assessments in this course build upon each other to form a training and development program, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.

What trainees take away from a training and development program depends on three critical components:

  • The trainee’s characteristics: how they learn, what they already know, and their motivation to learn the material being presented.
  • The training design: the program itself.
  • The work environment.

Since workplace training deals with adults, being well versed on how adults learn is key. There are many theories on adult learning, and they come from a variety of sources including psychology, education, and sociology. Another focus in your program design should be on learning styles. We learn in different ways—some of us listen and some take notes for example—and trainees will learn best when they know the objectives of the program. The outcomes of learning are wide-ranging, including verbal, intellectual, and motor skills, as well as cognitive strategies. To transfer what is learned in the training environment to the job environment, the training needs to be authentic—as real and identical to life and as meaningful (useful) to the trainee as possible.

Preparation

In preparation for this assessment, you are to select an organization to use as the one receiving a new training and development program. (Note: The organization can be real or fictitious.) Consider the needs of the organization to select a training topic, or you may use the Capella library to research training topics.

Requirements

For this assessment complete the following:

  • Create a training scenario for your training topic. Consider the following for your scenario:
    • Describe the training topic in general terms (such as improving communications or safety awareness).
    • Why is this training needed?
    • Assess the strategic impact of the training topic on the organization. (Think in terms of the long term impact of the training program.)
  • Develop a training needs analysis (TNA) for your topic. (Note: For the purposes of this assessment, you are not expected to actually conduct the TNA. Instead, research your topic using the Capella Library, the Internet, or in meeting with subject matter experts (SMEs) to determine what you want trainees to learn and create the information as if it is based on a TNA.) Consider the following in your analysis:
    • Identify what the trainees know or what they can do before the training.
    • Identify what the trainees should know or be able to do after they have completed the training and development program.
    • Summarize the results of your research or provide a set of the questions you would ask SMEs if you were to meet with them.
  • Develop 3–5 specific training objectives for your training topic. (Hint: Using Bloom’s Taxonomy, create your objectives based on what you have determined the trainees should know, or be able to do, after attending the training program.)
    • How would a distance learning module enhance a trainee’s learning experience?

Additional Requirements

  • Written communication: Written communication is in a professional style with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style.
  • Headings: Incorporate level headings according to current APA style.
  • Length: A typical response should be 6–8 typed, double-spaced pages.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

    • Write in a professional style using APA citations and format with correct grammar, usage, and mechanics.

Preparation

Understanding national culture is a critical piece to conducting business operations around the globe, and HR practitioners must be prepared to take their cultural intelligence and incorporate it into the best practices of managing all HR functions.

This assessment is based on the following scenario:

You and your human resources team work for a high-tech gaming firm in northern California called Fighting Games. Fighting Games has offices across Europe and the Pacific Rim and over 1200 employees in more than 50 countries. Among the biggest challenges the members and leaders of each office face is scheduling meetings in asynchronous time frames. The New York team and the Shanghai team have been assigned to work on the same project. The New York team is leading the story line and the graphics. The Shanghai team is in charge of special effects and overall integration of the game. Meetings are scheduled twice a week. The teams have been meeting, but both teams have been complaining to the executive team. The New York team has been arriving late and running the meetings much longer than they were scheduled to last. This has happened over a dozen times. The relationship between the teams seems strained and not long ago something surprising happened: the Shanghai team canceled a meeting after the New York Team had arrived late to the last three.

Consider the following points as you prepare for your assessment:

  • The New York and Shanghai teams are in different time zones, which makes coordinating meetings difficult.
  • There are two national cultures involved. Although the American team is multicultural, they have all lived in the United States most of their lives. The Chinese team is composed of all Chinese employees.

Requirements

Write a 3–5 page paper, using correct APA style and format, on cross-cultural leadership and how this situation might be resolved. Include the following:

  • Explain why cultural intelligence is important for HR practitioners and other organizational managers.
  • Articulate recommendations to develop cultural intelligence. Make three recommendations.
  • Describe how to respond and overcome the issues present in this workplace scenario.

Additional Requirements

Your assessment should meet the following requirements:

  • Length: 3–5 pages, including references.
  • Written communication: Communicate in a manner that is scholarly and professional. Your writing should be:
    • Concise and logically organized.
    • Free of errors in grammar and mechanics.
  • Validation and support: Use a minimum of three relevant and credible scholarly or professional resources such as the Wall Street Journal to support your work.
  • APA formatting: Format all citations and references in accordance with current APA guidelines. Refer to Evidence and APA for more information.
