Theory and Practice of Military Leadership Styles

Theory and Practice of Military Leadership Styles

Describe how leaders function in a complex global environment (CO4 & 5) As the world becomes more and more connected, the challenge of providing effective leadership increases.

A global environment requires leaders to influence subordinates and superiors, from different organizations and cultures, nation-states, and socio-political entities across borders and oceans.

In the U.S. Army culture, there is a belief that leaders lead from the front—that is, they lead by direct example. However, leading at the strategic level oftentimes poses challenges that preclude leading from the front.

In particular, the ability to influence a diverse force which operates over a vast geographical area forces leaders to find alternative ways to “lead from the front”.

Leading from the front takes on a new meaning in the 21st Century.
