Personal Reflection Paper on Family Strengths

Personal Reflection Paper on Family Strengths

Description and Instructions: This is a personal reflection essay on the topic of Family
Strengths. Please record your thoughts by using the following questions as a framework:
1. Do you believe that all families, no matter the severity of their current difficulties, have
strengths? Please provide a brief explanation for your answer.
2. When you evaluate the strengths of a family do you consider both the external structure
of the family, including the family’s interactions with its immediate environment, as well
as the internal functioning of the family?
3. Do you believe that the strengths of the family, as a whole, represent the cumulative
sum of the individual strengths of family members? Why or why not?
4. Do you believe that families could be assisted in therapy to operate in such a way that
individual family strengths get to build on each other to create a strong family instead of
canceling each other out? How would you accomplish this in family therapy?
5. Do you believe that that life is fluid and that there are always new opportunities for
building strengths? How can you help families capitalize on new opportunities for
growth?
6. Have you observed, in the families that you have worked with, that strengths which
served the family well at some point in time came to no longer be helpful to the family at
another point in time? How would you use this insight in family therapy?
7. What would make a family a “strong enough family”? How can you help all families to get
to that level of functioning?
8. What tools would you use to show family members the patterns existent in their family
system across generations and the interactions that they have (either supportive or
stressful) with their environment? To what extent do you think these tools are important
in building family strengths?
9. Do you think building insight and reflective capacity in individual family members results
in enhancing the strengths of the family as a whole? How about increasing the quality of
communication between family members? Please elaborate.
10. Was this assignment helpful in enhancing your own insights and reflective capacity
about family strengths? What are you planning to do with these new insights?

Barriers to Obtaining Behavioral Health Care

Barriers to Obtaining Behavioral Health Care

As we go through this course, we will find that there are many barriers to obtaining behavioral health services.

Some of those barriers are financial in that many services are not 100% covered by insurance.

Some practitioners do not accept any insurance, only cash and the client must then submit the bill to the carrier, usually for partial reimbursement.

There are not enough practitioners in many places in America and the world. For example, there are 27 child psychiatrists per 100,000 children in New York State. https://www.aacap.org/aacap/Advocacy/Federal_and_State_Initiatives/Workforce_Maps/Home.aspx (Links to an external site.)

“Ghana has a population of approximately 28 million people, yet the country has an estimated 18 to 25 psychiatrists, up from 11 psychiatrists in 2011.1-3 Compared with the United States, which has 10.54 psychiatrists per 100,000 people (approximately 1 psychiatrist per 9,500 people), Ghana has .058 psychiatrists per 100,000 people (approximately 1 psychiatrist per 1.7 million people). (Smalls-Mantey, 2019).

There are approximately 8,300 practicing child and adolescent psychiatrists in the US and over 15 million children and adolescents in need of the special expertise of a child and adolescent psychiatrists (American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, 2019) retrieved from: https://www.aacap.org/AACAP/Resources_for_Primary_Care/Workforce_Issues.aspx (Links to an external site.)

Stigma is a barrier to obtaining behavioral health care. Many cultures do not accept the concept of mental illness, believing instead that the person is possessed or is “cursed.”

Denial is a barrier to behavioral mental health services as in “I don’t have a drinking problem. I can quit anytime I want.”

Immigration status is a barrier to behavioral health services. Being undocumented in these times discourages individuals from seeking care as ICE, the immigration enforcement officials are now coming to courthouses and hospitals to remove those individuals who are lacking citizenship or tourist documentation. US citizen children are also failing to receive appropriate services as their parents are afraid to bring the child in for services for fear of family separation/deportation. Lastly, immigrant children are being denied mental health services after being traumatized by being separated from their families and detained indefinitely in strange surroundings.
