Food Culture Assignment

PART 1:

Imagine there is a country or area in the world you would like to travel to or a culture
you would like to know more about. Choose a culture/country/religion and develop and document
a typical meal for your selection utilizing the appropriate food pyramid for that country/culture.
The meal can be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a celebratory meal. Please list the foods that are
included in the meal.
In the meal, you must list the nutritional content total for the entire meal. The nutritional content
must include calories, carbohydrates, fat, protein, sodium, fiber, and essential vitamins and
minerals. You can use the Supertracker/Food Tracker tool used in the first assignment to obtain
this information easily (after putting in the data/meal, you can click on “nutrient report” which is
right below the graph. This will give you all of the nutrient data to answer this question). You can
do a screen shot of the extended nutritional content for the meal. You do not need to give me the

nutrient content for each food item, just the content for the meal as a whole.
PART 2:
After you have created a meal plan answer the following questions, USING YOUR OWN
WORDS to summarize:
1. What are the health benefits to this particular diet? Please answer this question and #2 based
on the culture’s diet as a whole, not just the meal plan you developed. Please list at least 3 and
describe what they are. Make sure to describe what the health benefits are. Don’t just tell me that
the diet has high vegetable consumption. Tell me specifically why vegetables are a benefit to the
body. What do the vitamins and minerals that vegetables are rich in do for the body to keep it
healthy? Or why is the fiber found in vegetables healthy for the body?
2. Are there any deficiencies or overabundance of certain foods or nutrients, such as too much
sodium, no vitamin C, not enough dairy, or very little protein? What are they and what are the
health risks associated with them? Think about what each nutrient they are missing is for and
describe what might happen if a person were deficient in that nutrient, whether it is a

macronutrient or a micronutrient. Be specific. If a diet is high in sodium, what are the health risks
associated with high sodium intake? Again, answer this looking at the diet as a whole, not just
the meal that you planned. No diet is perfect (even the Mediterranean diet), there are always
deficiencies. Please list at least 3.
3. Are there foods that are eaten every day? Give examples and why.
4. Are there any foods that are forbidden? Give examples and why.
5. Are there special foods for celebrations or special occasions? Describe the significance of the
celebratory food.

Alaska Emergency Management

Core Assessment:
For CJ353, the team will select local or state government organization concerned with
emergency management and planning, and research, analyze and critique on the organization’s
emergency management and planning processes. The focus of the analysis is to examine the
various emergency management planning components: Mitigation; Preparedness; Response;
and Recovery, as well as how the organization uses Unity of Command and NIMS principles in
its emergency management practices.
The research should include web search, periodicals, publications and interviews of personnel
involved with the Emergency Management planning of the organization and personal observations when possible.

Students should view the information obtained with the purpose of
critiquing the organization’s fulfillment of the components suggested by the text and other
sources. Explain the pros and a con of the organization’s emergency management process.
Have they anticipated emergencies that law enforcement will be responsible for? Have they
coordinated with other local state and federal agencies? Have they developed plans for handling
emergencies? Have they exercised these plans? What should the organization do to improve
their emergency management planning and response? What have they excelled at?
The purposes in conducting and writing this study are to improve your ability to synthesize,
analyze, and evaluate information carefully and objectively, solve problems effectively, present
your ideas in clear written form directed to a specific audience, in this case, your class.
To complete this project, you should:
Select the agency in which you are interested.
Gather materials from the agency, such as planning reports and practical exercise reports.
Interview persons working in the planning section about their job(s) in person, telephone or email.
Observe the activities in the organization if possible.
Describe the structure, practice, and procedures of the organization.
Describe the procedures you will use to conduct your study including interviewing some people
who work in the section Describe the results of your study.
Make conclusions about your findings, including the positive and negative aspects you
discovered.
Your paper must include:
A cover page
Abstract
Introduction
Methodology section
Discussion
Reference page
Appendix which might include a summary of your interview(s) and organization charts of your
agency and your section
The text of this paper should be at least 2,000 words or eight pages type-written or computergenerated, not counting the cover page, reference pages, and appendices. The paper shall be
double spaced in either Times New Roman, 12 font. You must demonstrate that you understand
the terminology and the concepts used in the section of the agency you study and that you know
how to apply these concepts. You must demonstrate that you can synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information. You must correctly use APA format in source citation both in the body of the
paper and in the reference page (6th edition or 7th edition, your choice).

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Genetics

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has gained much attention. The mental and
emotional trauma an individual goes through that affects them long-term does not apply only
to military personnel. The disorder is controversial for multiple reasons, including some
believing it does not truly exist. There is growing evidence it has a strong VGXE (variance due
to environmental variation that influences gene expression) component to it.
Research the VGXE component of PTSD. Discuss the interactions (at least three) seen thus
far between the genome and the environment, be specific. Discuss the implications of the
interactions (how they contribute to PTSD). What are the implications of VGXE when it comes
to treatment? Is there a way to potentially lessen the impacts of PTSD utilizing knowledge
of VGXE interactions? Is there a way to potentially prevent PTSD from occurring? What
other research needs to be done with this disorder?
For this paper, gather multiple journal articles, read them, and formulate your ideas relating
to the questions posed above. You, of course, may interject your own thoughts and opinions,
but make sure you back them up with evidence from the journal articles you find. You need
to have all elements of a research paper – introduction, main body, and conclusion.
Paper Criteria
 Provide a clear introduction to the topic of this paper;
 Provide at least three interactions seen thus far between the genes responsible for PTSD
and the environment;
 Discuss the implications of the VGXE interactions and PTSD;
 Discuss the implications of VGXE when it comes to the treatment of PTSD;
 Discuss potential ways to lessen the impacts of PTSD utilizing knowledge of
VGXE interactions;
 Discuss any ways of potentially preventing PTSD from occurring;
 Discuss other research they believe needs to be done with this disorder.
