Critical and Creative Thinking
Purpose
Management control is not about keeping people on a tight leash! Rather control refers to the
measures that management puts in place to monitor how well an organization is doing against
goals that were developed as part of the planning process. A popular measurement tool is the
balanced scorecard. This was developed by Kaplan and Norton as a means of monitoring
performance using a holistic set of measures rather than the more historical short term focus on
just financial performance and profits (albeit those are important). The balanced scorecard is
discussed on pages 363 -364 of the course textbook. It’s important to remember that all
measures are not just used to monitor how the organization is performing but also as a starting
point for future plans. The purpose of this assignment is to adapt a balanced scorecard to assess
your own performance in key management functions.
Description
Adapt a typical balanced scorecard to measure your current skills in the four functions of
management: Planning, Organizing, Leading and Control as the key areas in which you need to
excel to be an effective manager.
Identify the core skills and your objectives for each function and where you would currently
assess your own performance in each of them.

Finally, identify your future targets.
Creating the Scorecard
Adapt this image of a balanced scorecard to create your personal management scorecard. You
can develop your scorecard by hand or using computer software.
Submit either as a jpeg or pdf file via Assignments in the course navigation bar.

Genetic Disorders Explained (Descriptive Essay)

Genetic Disorders Explained (Descriptive Essay)

Topic:
The selection of the disease topic for the paper project is randomly done via lottery. The
number selected correspond to a disease topic listed in a document posted in Blackboard.
Objective:
To research and write a paper describing the cause(s) of the disease, how the disease
disturbed the anatomy and/or physiology of the organ(s)/organ system(s) involved, the
symptoms associated with the disease, treatments available, and any other historical notes or
relevant information you find interesting. The paper should be at least 5 pages, excluding the
title page, abstract, and citation page.
Guidelines:
Your paper should be composed in indented paragraphs. Make sure that the sentences
within the paragraphs are all topically united and cohesive, and that the paper has an overall
logical flow. This paper should be written formally, at the collegiate level, and must have a
professional outlook. Write formally, as if you were presenting this information to your peers in
the class. You should use the technical language of this discipline, but do not veer into extreme
detail that only a specialist would know. Please avoid using the first- or second-person point.
Completed project must be APA format, typed, and title page must contain the course
name, student’s name and submission date. Proper spelling and grammar must be present.
Please use 1” margins, and a standard font size of 12. The font of choice should be a
standard font style like Calibri, Cambria, Times New Roman, or Arial. Make sure that your font
is consistent throughout the paper, especially if you are typing on multiple devices! Use doublespacing, and do not have extra spaces in-between your paragraphs. NOTE: You will have to
change the default settings on most word processing programs to comply with these
guidelines. Change the settings before you start typing!
The minimum length is five (5) pages. Note that this does NOT include the title page, first
page abstract, nor the Works Cited page.
You MUST use in-text citations and include a Works Cited page. If you cite a source within
the paper, it must appear in the Works Cited page; conversely, all works in the Works Cited page
must be cited within the paper. You will be using APA format for the citations. You must use a
minimum of four (4) sources, but I strongly recommend digging for more, even when it comes to
researching basic information on the disease that you have chosen. Additionally, at least two (2) of your sources must be peer-reviewed articles. Other sources can include websites that have
.org or .gov endings. When citing these websites, only use one citation, even if you visit multiple
pages within the overall site.
This assignment will be submitted electronically through Blackboard.
Content:
The report must contain:
• Paper must be in APA format which includes a running head, abstract, in-text citations,
and references.
• Title page containing course name, course number, project name, student name and
submission date.
• An introduction explaining the cause(s) of the disease, its discovery, and epidemiology.
• The body of the project should contain a brief discussion on the demographic settings
(you can include in this this summary about specialty physicians or patient types).
• The body of the project should contain how the disease disturbed the anatomy and/or
physiology of the organ(s)/organ system(s) involved, the symptoms associated with the disease,
treatments available, and any other historical notes, global implications, or relevant information
you find interesting.
• Your paper should also have a conclusion of your research findings.
• Finally, there should be a list of at least four (4) resources used to compile report
information. Each entry should be specific as to source, author, date, publisher or web location.
URLs should be both the URL to the home page and the direct URL to the webpage containing
the data. The Reference List must be in APA Format. Wikipedia is NOT a valid resource.
The following web links should assist you with APA format including abstract:
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/owlprint/560/
https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
Grading:
Projects will be graded on adherence to all guidelines which include research quality,
content, writing quality (grammar and spelling) and APA formatting. Each of these four main
elements is equal to 25% of the overall project grade. Please see the grading section of the
syllabus and the Rubric (please see separate document) for an explanation of grading standards.
A minimum of 500 words is required. This assignment is worth 50 points.
For help with finding sources and learning about proper citation, please contact one of
the librarians; from my experience and conference with them, they really enjoy helping students
eager to do a good job.

For more assistance with the paper, there is a Writing Center on campus. Make a 30-
minute appointment with a Writing Center Counselor to go over your manuscript draft and  provide you with guidance to better improve your final submission. There is information (and
more online resources) here on their website.

Examples of multifactorial inheritance include

  1. heart disease,
  2. high blood pressure,
  3. Alzheimer’s disease,
  4. arthritis,
  5. diabetes,
  6. cancer, and
  7. obesity.

Some examples of single-gene disorders include

  1. cystic fibrosis,
  2. alpha- and beta-thalassemias,
  3. sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease),
  4. Marfan syndrome,
  5. fragile X syndrome,
  6. Huntington’s disease, and
  7. hemochromatosis.

6 Symptoms and Signs of Down Syndrome

The baby with Down syndrome has a hallmark appearance. However, every aspect of the appearance does not need to be present as the phenotype, the way the genes make the child look, can be markedly different for each patient. Common Down syndrome symptoms are:

  1. a small head and short neck,
  2. flat face, and
  3. upward slanting eyes, ears are flat and positioned lower than “normal,”
  4. the tongue protrudes and seems to be too large for the mouth,
  5. hands tend to be wide,
  6. short fingers and there is just a single flexion crease in the palm, and
  7. joints tend to be more flexible and muscles may lack tone.

Language Development in Children

Language Development in Children

Requirement: A 1500 WORD MINIMUM TERM PAPER: A term paper of no less than 1500
words (you can have as many over that amount as you wish). This will be written on a Topic that
you should select from a list of Language Development Hypotheses listed at the end of this
paragraph. The Term Paper is to present a discussion based on a minimum of three articles,
books or chapters in a book (excluding the class Text, of course), that describe, or support or
refute the hypothesis you have selected from the list. A minimum of three citations (you can have
as many above that number as you wish) with references in APA format will be included at the
end of the paper. An example of APA format is also provided in the Oviatt Library
(http://libguides.csun.edu/research-strategies/APALinks to an external site.). Please note,
however, that only the references need be in APA and not the whole paper.

Also, at the end of the paper you should include a short Appendix, which will answer three
questions: 1. What were the databases, if any, that you used to find each article or book; 2. What
was the search strategy you used (i.e., the search words you used) in each database to find the
articles; and 3. Was each article that you cited an example of Primary or Secondary research?
The Term Paper should be submitted as an assignment BUT also as a back-up measure emailed
to the instructor as an attachment and as text copied and pasted directly into the email message
itself.
Information Competency Exercise: Language Development Hypotheses (TOPICS) List to select
from for the Student Research for the Term Paper and also the Annotated Bibliography.
1. The effects of watching television for young children are detrimental to language development.
(This is my chosen topic)
[[[ ***My note: 1500 words for this is fine because for the last page after Appendix I need an
Annotated Bibliography and you may use the rest of the words on this page or your way but at
least 100 words per bibliography*** ]]]

[[[ ***My note: FOR THE Annotated Bibliography instructions*** ]]]
Requirement: An Annotated Bibliography will be developed including Five (100 word minimum
for each) Annotated Citations. With the exception of the first, these references will be based on
topics obtained from the Language Development Hypotheses in the list provided at the end of
this Section in BLUE. You may use the same Topic for all, or different Topics for each. The choice
is yours.
The First annotated citation will be on the Topic of the “Legal and Ethical Dimensions of the Use
of Information.” This information can be obtained from the Internet using a search engine such
as ONE SEARCH on the Oviatt Library Home page. The annotated citation should be in APA
format as much as possible, and should include the URL (address) of the Internet site; or a
citation of the book or article if that was used. The annotation should provide a short overview of
the article and/or list the most critical points. Please note that this one citation can relate to any
topic and not only Language Development.
The second two of these citations will be full Text articles or books obtained through Databases
of professional books and journals available at, or online through the CSUN Library. I
recommend using ONE SEARCH on the Oviatt Library webpage. These citations will be reported
in a APA format as much as possible. Included in the annotation portion of each citation will be a
paragraph, which briefly (like in a few sentences) summarizes the article (you can usually get this
information from the abstract), and answers to the following questions. If the answer is not
available, you simply state that fact:

1. What is the background (authority) of the author (viz., degree and type of education, affiliated
institution, history of research in the area as perhaps reflected by past articles in the
bibliography)?
2. Who is the intended audience (i.e., professionals, laypersons, women etc.)?
3. How does this work compare or contrast with others you may have cited or be aware of? If you
are not aware of any others, simply state that as the situation.
4. What is the scope and relevance of this work to the selected topic (hypothesis)? What the
heck do I mean by that? Well, is it highly or only vaguely relevant to the hypothesis; and is it of
minor or major importance.
The Last Two citations will be obtained through the Internet using any search engines but as
before, ONE SEARCH on the Oviatt Library Home Page should do just fine. These citations will
follow an APA format as closely as possible, including the URL information. Included in each
citation will be a paragraph, which briefly summarizes the site, and addresses the following
questions related to, for the purpose of this exercise, the voracity of the Website. If the answers
are not available in the site information, which may often be the case, simply state so and move
on:
1. Is the site owner/manager’s identity available and is it associated with a reputable
organization, company or educational institution?
2. What is the backgroun

d (authority) of the author (viz., degree and type of education, affiliated
institution, history of research in the area as perhaps reflected by past articles in the site
bibliography. If this information is not available, simply state that fact.)

3. What is the level of objectivity? For example, are there advertisements on the site related in
anyway to the topic?
4. Is the Website current? Cues to the contrary, for example, include broken or expired links
and/or no posting date or updated notations.
5. Is the information correct; error free, verifiable, and/or backed by full citations?
[[[ ***My note: Please use the same topic above. We also have a textbook so let me know if you
need it. I will take pictures because its on kindle*** ]]]
