CO-OPERATIVE EDUCATION FINAL REPORTExecutive SummaryThe aim of this report is to provide a reflection, discussion, and evaluation, as well as a critical analysis of my cooperative education journey. The main question that informs the discussion is how businesses, especially those in the real estate industry, can include a balanced work-life structure, while sustaining competitiveness and ensuring that employees are all-rounded and developed in personal realms. I find that there is a need to focus on a working and balanced work-life environment in the future of work for the benefit of the employee and the organization.

IntroductionIn this final report, I will give a reflection, discussion, and evaluation, as well as a critical analysis of my cooperative education journey. Personal ReflectionI work for Zhengzhou Country Garden Hai Long Zhi Ye Company as a market analyst. The company specializes in real estate and partners with restaurants and other hospitality industry players for purposes relating to real estate. My company partners with restaurants all over China and other hospitality participants including hotels to acquire and manage properties both in the construction phases and later in their maintenance. My role in the company is to provide market analysis for different real estate markets within the country for purposes of advising our clients and for managerial decision making intentions. My background as an economics major requires that I lead my team in conducting research, collection of data and its analysis, monitoring economic trends, and developing forecast reports for my organization in the real estate industry that focus on restaurant construction and sales. Real estate markets are very versatile and are affected by the slightest of changes in the national market as well as other external elements such as the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic. It is important that I am able to provide relevant information to my superiors in relation to how different changes in the market lead to various types of impacts on our company. Previously, at the start of the cooperative education program, I was only a part of the team as a market analysis. In the course of the program, I have been promoted to head of market analysis. What has changed is that I am now in charge of an entire department in the market analysis department. My role now includes managing and leading a team of other market analysts, to help in achieving the same goals to management and our clientele including conducting research, collection of data and its analysis, monitoring economic trends, and developing forecast reports for my organization in the real estate industry that focus on restaurant construction and sales.

My knowledge as an economics major has been of tremendous importance in my role as a market analyst. Particularly, I have been instrumental in my company in providing various types of reports including reporting on economic forecasts relevant to my organizations industry and competitive landscape in the real estate market vis-à-vis other firms that focus on restaurant construction, sales, and management. In my capacity as an economist and the job description of a market analyst, I am mandated with the functions such as making forecasts based on data collected from various sources, conducting research, and running simulations. Even then, I have had gaps in my knowledge. Specifically, there are some market trends that are difficult to relate to economic or financial predictors. For example, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still unknown and largely rely on speculative information. Such gaps have also been present in the way I have used my economics backgrounds to describe the changing real estate market for restaurants in China following a decline in the tourism, travel, and hospitality sector.

When I began working for my current organization, my main role was an assistant to the then senior market analyst. My roles were largely limited to observation of market trends, without an extension to analyse or interpret data. At this point, I only relied on my knowledge from my major in economics. I expected that the role of interpreting and analysing market trends was similarly easy. However, my initial thoughts were largely flawed. The interpretation and analysis part is the most critical in market analysis because it informs the decisions that the entire organization adopts in relation to the movements within the industry and external to it. My expectations were deeply flawed and I found out that every situation is unique to a specific market, client, industry, and period. I overcame these issues by observing and actively learning from my seniors. I was introduced to newer models of working that applied to the organization.

Today, I feel that my performance and progress have been remarkable in all aspects including my ability to make market trends observations, interpret the data, analyse it, and link it to my organization for faster decision making. One of my main issues was that I used what I had learnt in the classroom and thought the results always match what is on paper. In the real life organization, I quickly learnt that there was a big difference between theory and practical application of economic concepts, including observations on market trends and other analysis details. As part of my improvement, I have engaged with different individuals with more experience than I have in an attempt to learn more, enrolled in personalized training programs, and actively requested to be a part of the organization’s various training projects. For example, when I started working, my experience in using mathematical concepts and software such as SPSS in interpreting data was not very reliable and was based on what I had gained in my classroom training. At present, I have honed a majority of these skills in a way that I lead a team of other market analysts in my department in reporting, analysis, interpretation and writing recommendations and other forms of market analysis. My skills are now more effective and reliable, including a noticeable covering of the knowledge gaps that I had before. My job currently has developed more to one of a warning nature to the central planner in the organization on issue identifying with market patterns, what can be generally anticipated on the lookout, and how to go about various progress periods as we notice and respond to advertise developments. To create an environment that enables the employee to enjoy a balanced work-life situation, Cooke & Jing (2009) recommend the implementation of unpaid career breaks or paid sabbatical schemes based on what a firm is willing to provide, allowing employees to have extra days off work in case of an emergency or any other issues, creating a choice between paid or unpaid arrangements for having time off, providing holiday purchase programs to allow employees to have additional holidays together with their annual entitlement, ensuring that employees have access to parental, inclusive of maternity, paternity, and adoption leave in addition to the statutory minimum. Options can be made more flexible by giving the employee the choice between higher pay and longer leave. It is also recommended that an organization ensures that it creates family/employee events to ensure that a relationship is made between family and the organization where applicable. The overall aim of these suggestions is to make the work environment more attractive, so that employees do not feel constrained by the demands of a strict and traditional system. Challenges in Creating Work-Life Balance`Creating a life-work balance is one of the greatest ideas of the 21st century, aimed at ensuring that the employee-employer relations remain positive where every entity gains from the work interaction. That said, Kawase et al. (2013) point to the many challenges that emerge in the effort to achieve a balance between work and life. First, the main challenge that every organization faces is unrealistic demands from both employers and employees. Unreasonable demands may be present at work or in other arrangements required to maintain a balance. For example, there are arrangements that eat into personal time, including weekend or evening meetings, and the technology overload that require employees to remain working even when at home. These aspects are mentioned by Xiao & Cooke (2012) to be critical catalysts of employee pressure at various organizational levels. The demands of personal life also add pressure to work, because there is a need to create more time so as to accommodate friends and family, and these demands ay be eating into working time. For example, a single mum working at a company near where her child goes to school will use her work time to pick up the child from the school or drop them there during work time. In another example, a father who is forced to take evening classes in a training program organized by their organization eats into personal/private time. Other unrealistic demands include where expectations are set by others without proper consultation. Overall, having to many demands for both work and life is an impediment to the implementation of the said work-life balance.

Lack of control is another major challenge to the implementation of a balanced work-life relationship. Lack of control creates pressure, because it leaves the employee hanging without knowledge or control of the decisions made (Chandra, 2012). It becomes quite difficult for employees to deal with uncontrollable workloads or the insecurity that the situation creates relating to their organization. In personal circumstances including illness, school demands, exams, issues with children, and other personal demands can lead to the feeling that one has zero control, thus creating a stressful environment. To respond to this challenge, a different internal response is required such as creating an emergency and personal space for such situations. Table 1 below shows how the situation can be remedied through increased elements that create control.

Unsupportive relationships are also a major challenge for the efficient implementation of a work-life balance. According to Bouzari & Karatepe (2020), unsupportive relations at work, aversive behaviour, and failure to get credits create an unproductive, hostile and difficult work environment while making employees feel isolated. Additionally, Ratnesh, Ali, & Sinha (2019) felt that unsupportive relations at home, where there is a negative environment regarding helping each other or considering other people and their issues create frustration and, often, unhappiness. For the organization, the solution for unsupportive relationships is always related to effective people management, better communication, and creating realistic expectations. At home, the same elements are applicable through better communication and formulating expectations in order to reduce the pressures of meeting unrealistic demands.

Other challenges can be narrowed down to include a lack of resources, unhelpful attitude, a lack of skills, and high stress levels. Poor resource allocation and resources that are unfit for a situation affect how life can be balanced or organized. Without assistance at work or at home, it is certain that an employee will always be overwhelmed. When energy levels are low or undermined as a result of all these different challenges, it becomes harder for employees to find resilience. A lack of skills makes it hard to survive and manage the challenges that personal awareness and work demands create. A recognition of weaknesses must be accompanied by a desire to learn in order to convert the weakness into strength in areas such as leadership, communication, and practical skills (Kawase et al., 2013). Such developments lead to making an employee feel that they are more in control of their situation including at home and at work.

Implications to My OrganizationWork-life balance is a concept that supports the employees to split their time and energy and other important aspects of lives and it is the daily effort to make time for family, friends, communities, and other relevant stakeholders (Zaiga et al., 2020). In my organization, work-life balance includes the tenets of personal growth, self-care, and any other relevant personal activities from the workplace. If the demands or a balanced work and life relationship are satisfied then employees are more actively engaged in the affairs of the organization. In my organization, the human resource management function focuses on individual needs and aspirations to create a variety of options that would more effectively create an effective work-life balance. For example, the HR department is supportive and creates a conducive work environment through allowing nursing mothers to have personal breaks during the day for the purposes of meeting the needs of young children. My organization has developed a system of flexibility as a part of the work environment that is focused on creating a sense of commitment through giving employees enough personal time to ensure more creativity. Additionally, HR policies in my organization also look at the health and wellbeing of employees and foster their commitment and support through giving enough time for family norms. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, my organization introduced and reinforced working from home, flexible working schedules, and internal training on how to cope pressures at home while working from there.

The implication to my organization is that quality work-life balance relies on organizational policies as well as practices that are uniquely adopted for the organization. The main consequence is that my organization has implemented policies that have led to better communication between employees and the organization. From a personal point of view, leave policies have positively affected the quality of work-life balance for all employees to a significant extent.

In this article, I am going to be looking at Samsung as a global Brand.

First, I will mention that the company Samsung immediately comes to mind when you think of a high-end consumer durable such as a camera or MP3 player, or a mobile phone with an integrated cell phone, or even a plasma television, or even camcorders. Interbrand, an international brand valuation consultancy, ranked Samsung as the 6th most valuable global brand in 2017 in its annual ranking of the world’s top 100 brands. Samsung is a South Korean powerhouse that dominates the electronics industry. Samsung has amassed an impressively diverse empire that comprises holdings in a variety of industries such as electronic manufacturing, heavy industry, financial services, and commerce to mention a few.

Secondly, I want to talk about its achievements outside of its parent country. As part of a long-term strategy focusing on the building of a distinguished brand, the firm invested billions of dollars to reposition itself as an industry leader, emphasizing trademark characteristics such as innovation, cutting-edge technology, and world-class design. Samsung will attempt to use celebrities as part of its move to convey a Samsung lifestyle. The Korean brand and its high-end fashion concept will be deeply rooted in people’s hearts. There are several advantages to using celebrities in advertising, and the key for small companies is to make sure that the local celebrity is relevant and has a broad appeal before pursuing this strategy. Because they naturally draw a significant amount of attention, popular celebrities are often the most successful marketing tools. In spite of their massive fan audiences, celebrities are most effective when they promote products or services that they would themselves purchase or use. Another way of putting it is they must be trustworthy consumers.

In cementing the position of celebrity use as part of Samsung’s global marketing, the images of pop idols will become connected to the brand names of Korean consumer products in transnational marketing. Consumption choices may be significantly influenced by consumers’ admiration for certain celebrities, according to research. Some individuals may feel that “if it’s good enough for her, it must be good enough for me,” which is incorrect. It is common for ads for cosmetics, skincare goods, hair products, and apparel to be based on this concept as inspiration. A local celebrity’s wavy hair, for example, piques the curiosity of many consumers. Because of this, people purchase the brand of hair products that the celebrity uses to get the fullness and bounce that she has in her hair. Additionally, local consumers may be interested in sipping on the same soft drink as their favorite baseball celebrity. A local celebrity’s endorsement of a small company’s products, in essence, gives the items of the small business instant credibility.

Moving on to the multi-domestic Integrated strategy, Samsung will use transnational advertisements, ball games sponsor and so on. It is referred to as a “multi-domestic strategy” by Samsung, which refers to the practice of adopting completely different sales tactics, marketing strategies, and product portfolios depending on the specific locations in which they are operating. Rather of a single global brand that is well-known around the globe, many smaller, country-specific brands cater to the tastes and needs of local clientele. As a global brand, Samsung has two distinct advantages over its rivals when it comes to international expansion. There is a choice between a strategy that is more globally oriented (one overarching brand based in your home country, with little to no adjustments for various markets) and a model that is more locally responsive (one brand based in your home country, with little to no adjustments for various markets) (serving specific local market needs, tastes, and preferences).

In conclusion, from the current discussion, Samsung should adopt strategy-driven approach with nimble execution based on a continuum of standardization/adaptation to create consistent brand message and experiences. The use of Korean k-pop stars could be effective in the short term but prove futile in international markets in the US and China where the popularity of Korean popstars is limited.

Introduction

Flashover or Backdraft Occurs While Crews Are in A Working House Fire in New Chicago

Working house fire with a backdraft or flashover at 402 Indiana on 02-17-12 Chicago. Three members were in the house when the fire incident occurred. A fire engine arrived at the fire scene and reported a working fire; however, at that time, there are no visible flames that are being observed, only a billowing smoke that emerges from the top of the roof and a space resembling a chimney at a low speed. The crew quickly stretched lines into the house to knock the fire down and cut a hole in the living room roof, allegedly the entrance. Shortly after they cut the hole, an explosion blew one of the officer’s helmets off his head and blew the leaves on the lawn.

Some firefighters use the ladder to get to the roof, trying to make some holes to allow smoke out of the compartments. A crew member uses the ladder to descend from the roof; however, fire is fast spreading, and flames are more intense due to the oxidization of the air. The nozzle is then positioned to attack the fire, and there is an explosion that occurs shortly since the holes in the roof create a chimney effect, fanning the fire. The crew later gets some water on the roof using an unrooted ladder. They manage to put out the fire despite the much damage that has been caused to the windows and rooms due to the water. Air could have reduced the effects of fire if it could have been cooled without putting any effort to put out fire at first, and the door could be closed until the water is available to put out the fire.

The fire resulted in a flashover with heat influx experienced with steam and vapor emerging from the flames exiting the window. The firefighter’s helmet and coats are also affected by the temperatures experienced inside. The door flung open results in the entry of oxygen, which in turn oxidizes the fire, and there is increased flaming combustion that is seen through the windows on the Alpha and Bravo corner. The fire resulted in damages, especially on the roof; however, no reported injuries were traced.

House Fire -Four Oaks (7-23-2013)

The fire engine arrives, and they report a working fire. One of the firefighters rushes and pushes the door open by a kick and finds his way to the Alpha side through the door. The rest of the engine company crew stretch the hose line towards the Bravo direction. There is increased flaming combustion during this time, which is noticeable through the Alpha and Bravo corner windows.

The firefighters use the Alpha side to exit the door, and flames resulting from combustion can be observed from the Bravo side window. The firefighters resolve to reposition the dry hose line and place it on the front porch. Fire glazes continuously and fills the compartments in the Alpha and Bravo sides. Simultaneously, flames surround the windows and mostly fill the Alpha corner and later exit the upper area via the Alpha side door. The heat influx in the house results in flames exit through the window, doors, and under the roof porch with steam and vapors shown by their emergency coats and helmets put on by the fire fighting crew placed on the Front Side of the Alpha window and the front porch. The hose line on the front porch is filled with water, and the firefighter positioned at the nozzle is required to spread water to the front porch making an entry through the front door.

Management of the door in case of an entry or an exit until the hose line is properly placed so that water can be applied immediately reduces the effectiveness of fire. Spreading water to the fire compartment before entry reduces heat rate and allows more time for adjustment to advance the hose line to the seat of the fire. Heat effects to the fire fighters can be managed if cooling of air takes place at the beginning.
