In The Odyssey

Topic 1: In The Odyssey, Odysseus has to travel to the Underworld (Book XI), and there he meets some people he knows from his life on earth. Based on some of his conversations and observations, what do you think of the Greek version of the afterlife? What values seem most important to the Greeks?

Reader Response #2 (452)

The author’s use of blank literary devices helps convey the thoughts most Greeks have about the afterlife which are quite abstract as many of their thoughts are varied.

The afterlife is presented as an event that could either be good or bad, almost a contrast of what is seen as a clear-cut description of the concept of “Good and Evil”.  The Odyssey creates a fantasy of what is viewed to be lovely and beautiful in the afterworld. As I mentioned earlier with the contrasts of concepts of the Greek afterlife, there are two separate places that the characters either end up. This also seems to be affected by whether that character is immortal, mortal, or even a God. Greek Mythology is very complex and there is not one answer or meaning to anything. Things that viewers could see as controversial like adultery, killing, and Incest are all condoned and rarely received negatively. There’s a dynamic between afterlife’s involving a Heaven where the majority of the God reside like “heaven” and Hades a place where lost souls of those who had many wrong-doings in life stay in “Hell”. The concept of afterlife is paying for what you dwelled upon in your lifetime. As Zeus speaks to Orestes, Agamemnon’s who slaughtered royal Aegisthus and addresses their actions and Aegisthus fate with condemnation. “It’s disgraceful how humans blame the gods. They say their tribulations come from us,

when they themselves, through their own foolishness,

bring hardships which are not decreed by Fate…Aegisthus knew his acts would bring about his total ruin. So he has paid for everything in full.”

(1.35-44.5)

As the description of hades is known to be very grim the impact is also evident. The sheer details that are talked about when discussing Hades evokes true fear in anyone. As the lord Teiresias went to Hades for his prophecy he encounters his mother which speaks of how dangerous the place is “For living men it’s

difficult to come and see these things—huge rivers, fearful streams, stand between us, first and foremost, Oceanus, which no man can cross on foot. (11.126-130.82)

The depiction of such Hades is the afterlife that many people must encounter and with this entry the terrors of this place adds to the mysterious horror that’s hidden in afterlife beliefs.

As I read the story several things were a bit boring gust I also was able to connect with some of the lessons appearing to be taught. Once reading most of the books you notice that each chapter has a central point/ purpose and each story has an underlying mean that connects either to morals or the afterlife. Its fascinating  to see how closely related to concepts if afterlife tie into certain religion’s. Specifically directly tying into my personal life, I am a Christian and in the Bible the relations of Heaven and Hell are greatly talked upon. The depiction of Hades is so parallel to Hell, I wonder why they are so clearly related. I remember actually having an encounter when I was dreaming about heaven and how luxurious it was. The complex relatives that we experience in connection to the spiritual realm is always interesting.

Tara Brown, (Jan 16, 2020). Finding the cure for dementia. 60 Minutes Australia. Retrieved from: https://youtu.be/iEpTH70xRIs?t=73Describe your impressions of the atmosphere in the audience in this video.

Dementia is one of the world’s greatest diseases that upon mention creates fear among the people. Everyone would like to make it to 80s but nobody wants to get there only to find out that things aren’t the same as expected. The fears of Dementia are always high as it is characterized by loss of memory. As a result people feel like a burden to the community.

Memory fades with age and this has been consistent with the descriptions from the video. As a person ages, they tend to lose their memory and this is not pleasant to anyone who wishes to be at old age. At the beginning some people in their 80s complained that they felt like they were aged 120s and above. They were already tired of the dementia. However, there is a sign of relief to the audience as the cure for dementia has been found through healthy lifestyles.

What were the main points in the video (describe 4 points, 1 general and 3 for older people)

Alcohol – A drink in the afternoon and before dinner always a better option for longevity

Dieting – Unlike for younger people, dieting for the old people is not considered. Old people need fat insulations in their body to keep them warm and therefore dieting doesn’t matter.

Exercise – In regard to exercising, less minutes of exercise and more frequently worked better than for individuals who worked out 3 hours a day.

Romance – For the old people, romance is key as the old couple attributes their longevity to a romantic relationship. A kiss before and after sleep is essential to long life.

What kind of benefits do old people receive from the sleep?

Sleep is significant to everyone but to the old people it is more essential. A well regulated sleeping routine helps the elderly in improving their overall health as well as the quality of life. Other than helping improve the quality of life and longevity, regulated sleep is essential in increasing alertness during waking hours. Therefore, a well regulated sleep is essential for the elderly to prevent them from sleeping for long hours which increases the chances for Alzheimer disease.

How effective (stimulating and facilitating) was the facilitator? Give three examples of techniques the speaker used to keep attention of the audience.

Use of questions – The speaker has used questions to the audiences by questioning life at old age

Creating emphasis on certain issues – For the patterns used in longevity, the speaker emphasizes on key issues such as dieting and use of alcohol.

Keeping the topics short – Short topics with quick transitions has been used to help the audience not to get bored during the video.

Attention grabbing introduction – The speaker begins with a speech and an interview to old people that make a topic interesting.

What were the differences in sleep between old and middle-age people in the video?

The video doesn’t talk about sleep patterns but emphasizes on other issues in regard to longevity

Effective Policing

Effective Policing

“Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid” President Ronald Regan once said that. Policing in my opinion is the good that is there in the society today. For the good to be effective and to overcome the evil that is spreading like wild fire then the statues and the policing principles guiding the society must be perfect and articulate in order to meet the needs of the pollution and to effectively serve them. Effective policing is the one that serves the public in the most effective ways an continually seeks out and also adopts the proven good practice. In other words it is professional.

Accountability is a wonderful principle. Effective policing is one that holds officers accountable and also upholds state-of the art policies. Policing in other words can be seen as a unique component and primarily in the U.S department of justice, which seeks to prevent or resolve community conflicts and tensions that often arise from actions, other policies and the definite practices of particular systems. The tension and conflicts is often brought about by the actions, the policies and the practices that are perceived to be discriminatory on the basis of race, color or the national origin. (Novak, 2003)

From the above provision, I believe the service or community policing is the effective form of policing. It is has had overreaching success stories in that it seeks to provide services such as conciliation, mediation and the most technical assistance directly to the people and their communities in particular. The main aim of the service policing is to promote nation building, by promoting the principles and the ideals of nondiscrimination. The police department has been seen as a critical unit because, it is a special department that can produce incidents that more often than not escalate into violence. From the above discussion it is evident that community policing is the effective type of policing as it focuses on developing relationships with community members as well as being a highly personal type of policy.
