Preventing Skin Cancer

Overview

The World Bank’s Independent Evaluation Group (IEG) released a lackluster report about the World Bank’s Department of Health, Nutrition, and Population in 2009. The IEG found that one-third of the department’s public health programs were ineffective. While many programs were highly successful, programs such as HIV-AIDS in Africa only had a 25% success rate compared to the typical 80% overall success rate for the World Bank’s programs. The IEG discovered that the department’s public health programs were too complex and did not have organized planning procedures (Faiola, 2009).

Many people and organizations such as the World Bank undertake public health programs; unfortunately, not all programs are successful. The most common reason for failure is lack of effective planning. Regardless of good intentions, a successful plan requires careful and systematic advance programming.

For this Assignment, you will be assigned to a small group to analyze public health programs and the effectiveness of their program planning. You and others in your group will review articles describing two programs that approached the same health issue in two different ways. As a result of the group collaboration, you will submit a paper that analyzes and makes recommendations related to the planning of these two public health programs. This Assignment is not due until Week 3; however, it is important to start to work with your group this week.

For this Assignment, use peer-reviewed, scholarly articles in addition to the Learning Resources to support your paper.

Review your two assigned public health programs provided in the Learning Resources. In your document, do the following:

  • Briefly describe the two programs studied by your group.
  • Explain the benefits and limitations of each program.
  • Explain the importance of planning to the effectiveness of each program.
  • Describe two strategies for improving program planning and justify your selections.
  • Explain how improvements in planning might have changed the program outcomes.

Groups will be assigned. Each group will turn in only one 7- to 9-page document. In order to do this, you will need to choose which student will turn in the paper. You will also need to make sure that every group member’s name is included on the paper. This Assignment is due in Week 3.

Support your response using the Learning Resources and the current literature.

Geller, A. C., Hufford, D., Miller, D. R., Sun, T., Wyatt, S. W., Reilley, B., . . . & Koh, H. K. (1997). Evaluation of the ultraviolet index: Media reactions and public response. Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 37(6), 935–941.

Your Assignment should be written in standard, edited English and follow APA guidelines as accurate as possible. Be sure to support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and additional scholarly sources, as appropriate. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association to ensure that your in-text citations and reference list are correct.

Scholar-Practitioner Project: Developing Goals and SMART Objectives

This week, you begin submitting materials for your Scholar-Practitioner Project (SPP). Your SPP is a proposal to develop an evidence-based public health program. You start by defining the goals and the objectives for your program. For this Assignment, review the media on creating goals and objectives for public health programs.

Your work needs to be supported by the Learning Resources and current literature. Please remember to cite your own work when referencing your SPPs from PUBH 8450 and PUBH 8440.

Some of the information you submit this week may change as the quarter progresses; therefore, for your final SPP project (due in Week 11), it is important that you incorporate Instructor feedback.

Keep in mind that as you are developing your goals and objectives, as referenced in the Scholar-Practitioner Project Guidelines (located in the Week 1 Learning Resources area) you have been given a budget and timeline to use.

As a reminder:

The SPP is a proposal for a public health program running on a 3-year grant with an annual budget of $300,000. Based upon these parameters, the SPP includes details of how you would develop this program, including the details of the budget and timeline.

For this Assignment, reflect on the type of public health program you are planning.

Review SMART guidelines that are related to framing objectives to be used with goals.
