Purpose of this Assessment
The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate an understanding of how data and information can be
used to help an organization make data driven decisions.

Step ONE: Preparation
As a database administrator, it is important to be familiar with the various types of databases and
database management systems available and be able to distinguish between rational data models,
schemas, manipulations, and attributes. Being familiar with these tools will allow you to perform
common maintenance tasks that will be required to improve the performance and functionality of your
database. In addition, it will allow you to take the appropriate steps to secure your database, protect
the integrity of data, and ensure that your system is scalable and can support future growth.
For this assessment, you will be assuming the role of database administrator for WeWin Legal Services.
You will be evaluating the existing database environment and will be making recommendations for
configuration and optimization with the goal of improving performance.
The organization has been very successful and continues to grow. You are planning on hiring a new
employee to help you manage the database. In preparation for your new hire, you will create a training
manual for your new employees that provides detailed information on how to manage and administer
the database.

Specifically you should include guidance on how to:
● Create tables, views, and stored procedures
● Explain steps required to copy a database
● Explain steps required to attach and detach a database
● Explain steps required to import data from external sources
● Utilizing SQL Profiler explain steps required to correctly baseline a database
In addition, you will want to include an introduction that describes your plans of incorporating GIS into
the database along with a description of how GIS can be used within the organization.
Step TWO: Completing the Written Report
The written report must follow APA formatting and include the following sections. Each section should
include the relevant heading:
A. Title Page
B. Introduction to the database and database management system (1 page)
C. Recommendations on the tools that can be used to visualize data. (1-2 pages)
D. Effective design of a database (2 pages)
E. Database design lifecycle (2 pages)
F. Recognize the effects of poor database design (2 pages)
G. Tools that can be used to visualize data (1-2 pages)
H. Recommendation for database maintenance (2 pages)
I. Summary (1 page)
J. References (1 page)
Step THREE: Complete Checklist for Submission
Before you submit, check to see if you believe you have met the criteria noted below.
Did you…
✓ Provide an insightful and thorough analysis of the database? Did you make sure your
comparisons are clear and clearly defined and described?
✓ Demonstrate sophisticated understanding of all IT systems as they relate to the organization.
✓ Consistently and accurately recommend and analyze the systems discussed.
✓ Accurately and precisely integrate at least five references into the Final Paper and provide
well-documented in-text citations and a reference page?

Step FOUR: Submit Your Work
● Your completed files should be submitted through the Final Assessment page of your
competency.
