This assignment asks you to develop an annotated outline of your final paper. The outline
should cover the scope of your paper from motivation to research questions and hypotheses, to
data, methods, findings and results, conclusions, and recommendations if any. The annotations
should briefly describe the salient issue(s) in each section of the outline. The annotations must
be substantive not procedural. Substantive means that you must describe the central issues that
will comprise the content of each section of the outline. By comparison, a procedural outline
might say something such as “In this section, I will discuss…” with the “…” filled in (e.g., “this
section will review the literature”). You cannot submit a procedural outline and expect to receive
an “A” grade for this assignment. You will not have completed all the work for one or more
sections of your outline by next week. This is fine and is expected. However, to complete a
substantive outline, you must describe what you have learned or found so far, even if what you
write needs to be modified later because you have learned more. If you have results to present,
discuss them, but do not include tables or figures in the outline.
