Effects of Parental Absence on Child Development

Effects of Parental Absence on Child Development

The purpose of this application project is to offer students an opportunity to apply their learning regarding healthy development in adolescence and to reflect upon what might be helpful advice or recommendations for parents of teenagers.

Background

Part 1: Creative Portion: Rather than a more typical essay-style writing assignment, for this brief project, students will create and draft the framing and script for a commercial, advertisement, public service announcement, or similar component that could be used in a positive parenting campaign (such as a commercial on television, a YouTube or other social media ad, a poster on the wall of a pediatrician’s office or high school hallway, and so forth). The creative portion can be written as a detailed description, narrative, script, or artistic representation (e.g., poster). Students can feel free to be creative and have fun with the method and type of submission they make. The Creative Portion should not exceed 1 page (i.e., any spacing or visual representation is acceptable).

Part 2: Explanatory Text: Then, students will draft an explanation and description of the purpose for the Creative Portion, outlining why they chose the particular message, and why they decided to present the message in the manner they did. Importantly, although the Creative Portion can be in whatever creative format is desired, the explanatory text should be in the form of an APA 7th-edition-formatted scholarly writing and should reference relevant course material, including the Simpson “Raising Teens” report (Access the report here: https://hr.mit.edu/static/worklife/raising-teens/pdfs/raising_teens_report.pdf Links to an external site.) and the Steinberg text. The accompanying evidence-based Explanatory Text should not exceed 1 double-spaced page.

The final submitted Application Project must include both of the components above to be eligible for scoring. If one or both components are not submitted, the assignment cannot be scored.
