Feminism Today
The most successful social movements in the history of the 20th Century still exist today. It is important to mention that there was a time when the movement was considered irrelevant as the world claimed women had achieved equality. However, issues such as the alarming rate of gender-based violence have given the movement more power through renewed purpose. The young population is also embracing it greatly, which further supports its existence. Today the theory of feminism is not just about the women but the world in general, engaged through important intersectional perspectives. The theory is rooted in and oriented towards movements for equality, justice, and freedom. Feminist theory today resists the idea that early feminists’ petitions for radical equality have been outdated. However, the new theory conceptualizes the concept of feminism while also focusing on modifying liberal democratic forms. Muslim women, for example, beyond advocating for equality want the mainstream media to stop portraying a one-dimensional image of them that is misleading (Muslimah Media Watch).
