First Invasion: The War of 1812 is a documentary by History Channel that describes the American War that took place in 1812. This was a fight between Americans and the British and this was the first time they were fighting since the American Revolutionary War. The war emerged because of the sanctions that had been placed by the British and the French on the US as a consequence of the Napoleonic wars. The British council took measures in 1806 crippling American trade resulting in President Madison declaring war on Britain in 1812. The documentary includes comments by historians including the causes of the conflict, the American designs on Canada, the battle that took place in New Orleans, burning down of Washington DC and the narrator is Edward Herrmann.

The documentary describes monumental American achievement considering many had doubted the move by the president most terming it disastrous as they were going to attack a powerful nation. This period in history was heavily neglected but the documentary gives precise occurrences. The comments by historians gives the documentary authenticity as these are individuals well versed with what has been happening in history including the causes of the war. The documentary also uses images that have been documented about the war giving the film authenticity. The part that stood out for me was the battle in Washington as members of government fled the city. The burning of the buildings including the White House was proof that British wanted to go full force on this war. There was death of soldiers but it is this war that fueled Americans into continuing the war to prove although it was a young nation. I was also intrigued by Dolly Madison the first lady who tried securing everything before the White House was burned including the painting of George Washington portrait. Generally, the documentary is able to give accounts of the happenings in history in an authentic manner although it seems to be more pro-American.
