Introduction

The question as to whether a gun should be banned or not is very controversial. Although the Second amendment to the constitution allows Americans to own guns, there are controls associated with it. Whether a gun should be a weapon or a tool is indisputable. Major concern should be who is supposed to have the right of carrying a gun. It has been argued that guns do not harm but the bearers do. The issue of legalizing or not legalizing is discussed in this essay.

Gun ownership greatly helps in self-defense among the citizens. The proponents of Gun ownership argue that the idea that guns are used in criminal activities is misleading since these activities are believed to have existed even before the guns came into existence. Guns reduce the crime rates since the criminals may fear being attacked by their target who own guns. For people to remain peaceful, the most important thing is love and trust in the society. Bearing guns may make America less vulnerable to attacks from outsiders hence increasing our level of security (O’ Leary 2013).

In addition, guns may be required in physics lessons to enable students learn how it works. In rural homes, riffles are widely used in hunting and therefore illegalizing them may deny a citizen’s right to hunt. Moreover, banning guns may lead to rising of black market that will even impose more threat to the citizens with criminals even earning a lot more from the gun business. Civilians’ contribution towards the companies selling guns cannot be denied. The companies’ sale increases thus getting enough money to make weapons that are even more sophisticated. Additionally, there are deadlier weapons used in mass destruction apart from guns. For instance, citizens owning guns did not contribute the 9/11. People have used knives in killing others and other simple things such as pens that are turned into weapons by their users. The people of America may also use the guns against a dictatorial government (Shapiro, 2013).

The shooting that occurred in Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut which took lives of 20 children and 6 adults is just but one of the incidences that would discourage any civilian from holding a gun. People have irresponsibly used guns in eliminating other people due to either stress, anger or any reason that may only be understood by the suspects. People should not wait to fall victims in order to say no to guns. The misuse of guns is rampant and the idea of using guns for self defense is outdated. Several other tactics can be introduced for self-defense since the more the gun is available the greater the chances of using it ( Shapiro, 2013).

Ban on guns may enable the police to identify the illegal owners and reduce the number of deaths caused by guns. Ownership of guns may imply that the government is no longer responsible in providing security and this may discourage tourists from visiting the country. The children should not be brought up believing that the only sure way of self-defense is by use of guns. There are other means of survival apart from guns and the young generation should be taught that the society need to live peacefully is paramount. Other hunting methods should be used instead of guns (Shapiro, 2013).

Although the right of owning a gun has been abused, it is still very important for the safety of the citizens. No one may be aware of when and how he may be attacked by criminal, colleagues either at work or in a social place such as in the football arena. There is a great need to protect properties and this cannot only be done by the government but also requires personal consciousness. Guns should therefore be allowed among the civilians but with a very stern law put in place to control the misuse of it. People misusing guns or insane individuals should be denied of the right of owning guns.
