HISTORY OF PUERTO RICO CULTURAL ASSIGNMENT GUIDE

Definition of the assignment:
Students will choose a work of Puerto Rican culture, provided by the instructor, in the sixth week of class. Then, s/he will read, watch, or listen to the work and write a 2-3 page paper on the subject. Consult the course outline for the due date in this project.
Purpose of the assignment:
1) To offer students a way to sample some of the greatest cultural works in the island’s history; and 2) To understand somewhat of the significance in history and society of cultural works.
Procedure for the assignment:
Students will receive a discussion post listing the works for the assignment in week six of the class. On that discussion thread, choose a topic as listed by replying to the thread. The discussion thread will shut down at the end of the week, so make your choice sooner rather than later.
The unit contains a section for the cultural assignment. Open the assignment folder that you chose. There should be a link or PDF file, as well as questions to answer;
Examine the work in question, whether it is music or literature. In music and painting, choose four pieces from each artist. In literature, two pieces;
Find out about the work on-line by locating a non-Wikipedia source that discusses the work; Find another source that discusses the creator of the work(s); then
Write a short reaction paper to the work or works in question.
The paper will consist of four parts- a short biography of the creator, an overview of the work itself, and the student’s impressions of the work. Finally, the student will offer her/his opinion as to what cultural works mean in the history of a nation.
