Hustlers Movie Review

The film Hustlers is a feminist movie based on a New York Magazine article. The article talks of a group of strippers in the 2007-2008 era who were led by a famous stripper Ramona whose role has been played by Jennifer Lopez and who began drugging wealthy men of wall street after the financial crisis that made their work a lot harder. Jennifer Lopez is a single mom and is the leader of the gang, Destiny whose role has been played by Constance Wu idolizes Ramona and takes up the stripping to support her infirm grandmother. It is during this time of financial crisis that some of the women come up with a scheme that is aimed at stealing from and hustling dozens of the wealthy men and the Wall Street bankers. They planned to implement the scam through identifying some lonely or obnoxious well-to-doers, getting them drunk, drugging them and taking them to the strip club where they would siphon all the money in the credit cards. However, a habit is a disease and is hard to quit, sooner than later, they find themselves deep into it.

Female dominance over men is one of the major themes that has been depicted in the film. Women have ganged together against wealthy men, a depiction of the nature of women crime. By taking the major roles in the movie, such as the starring, the film supports feminism in a higher ground. Crime is another theme that can be deduced from the film, as the women gang together and drug the prey so that they are able to steal from them, although they do not use forced robbery, the act of drugging and maxing the credit cards can be deemed a criminal offense. Even though women are stealing from wealthy men, they have depicted a theme of unity and caring. Jennifer Lopez is a single mother while Wu has a sick grandmother, and they have an obligation to take care of them, and thus, they show a lot of compassion to the people they love. Besides, the act of the women coming together in crime shows the ability of women when united; they are able to do more than when separated. Unity is strength and this has been depicted in the film “Hustlers”.
