In your experience what factors associated with death and dying determine how you and/or your family and friends cope with death? (2points)
The factors associated with death are usually age, occupation, health conditions, among others. Age is an important factor as most people believe that the older one gets, the more likely they are to die. After attaining around eighty years, many people are ‘prepared to die.’ Occupation is also a factor to consider. Those enlisted in the army often devote their lives to their country. Therefore, they are expected to die for it, regardless of age or other factors. Also, some jobs are high-risk jobs such as long-distance drivers or stuntmen. Health conditions are likewise another issue to be considered. People with cancer, diabetes, or other terminal illnesses are likely to die faster than those who are healthy.
In your informed opinion (base on text and other sources), what helps the healing process? (1.5points)
Accepting the loss and grieving and mourning is the first step in the healing process. People are encouraged to cry and let out the sorrow or pain to heal faster. It also involves talking to others and sharing experiences on how one feels. In case of trauma faced after losing a loved one, it is advisable to speak to a professional counselor or a therapist to help move on. Holding get-together parties involving family and friends of the deceased can help people interact and lift spirits. By developing a support system, one can have a group of close friends and relatives who will help you understand how to heal.
Do you have any advice (based on your own experience, the text and other sources) on how to help someone cope with the loss of a loved one or death in general? (1.5points)
My advice is that in coping with someone’s death. The grieving process is the most important. It is also vital for the mourner to know that the grieving process is unique to each person, dependent mainly on the relationship shared with that person and circumstances that led to the death. A mourner must talk about their sorrow, as ignoring it will only make things worse. A mourner should also expect to experience many different emotions, and this is normal for everyone. Also, dependent on one’s culture, it is advisable to embrace religious beliefs. The final step in healing is accepting the loss that has occurred.
Evaluate the controversy of the Right to Die with Dignity (based on your text and other sources). What are the pros of having laws that support this policy? (1.5points). What are the cons? (1.5 points)
The Right to Die with Dignity Bill allows a sane adult suffering from fatal illnesses to hasten their deaths. It applies to adults who are diagnosed with a terminal illness and are given a lifeline of six months or less by doctors. It is done without the influence of politicians, religious leaders, and family members. The primary advantage is that it is within the patients’ right to choose a decent death over the suffering faced before succumbing to the illness. It is also known to be a safe medical practice that is painless and respectable. The cons are that sociologists have long associated it with a spike in suicide cases. Psychologists have also said that people with terminal illnesses are often depressed, clouding their judgment on whether they wish to live or die.
