My best friend

When I was young, I thought a friend was the guy who shared food with me, with whom we played together. I did not have a really strong understanding of the word “friend” at that time. It is only after I met Abel, now a friend and a true companion for almost 10 years that I started understanding and appreciating the meaning of a friend. Sometimes we had a great time enjoying moments in our lives together, at other times we grew up facing the same difficult situations. Considering what we have gone through together, I can say my relationship with Abel qualifies as that of best friends. A best friend is someone who stands by you in all circumstances, whether good or bad, and whom you always feel you can share with everything, including your secrets.

First of all, I have to say, Abel is really handsome. In fact he is one of the best-looking boys I have ever seen; he has beautiful black eyes and maintains an attractive hair-cut like that of James Bond! He is of average height and is slightly built. He can dance very well and was the initiatory of our high school dancing club. He likes to walk with his hands in his pockets, something that I always tease him about. Of course he has girlfriends, but that does not affect the fact that we are good buddies. Abel has really been nice to me over the years and that is why he is my best friend. He has always kept my interests in his heart. I can still remember an event in the summer, 2 years ago; One day as I was planning to eat my lunch, the phone rang. I picked it up and it was him on the other end. He told me that he could not solve his math homework and needed my help. I asked, “Do you know what time it is bro, can’t you wait till I finish my lunch?” I told him off in an unfriendly manner. Abel apologized and told me he forgot about the time because of the math homework. At that time I did not care about what he said, I hung up the phone and enjoyed the rest of my meal. I was thinking up an excuse because I did not want to go see him that day, I was tired and the weather was very hot. The next day in the morning as I was reviewing my English notes, I realized that some pages were missing. Abel had them all and I wondered if he could help me out. I looked at the clock and it was 1150, then I remembered how I treated him the previous day. I thought that he was probably going to treat me in the same way but I decided to call him anyway. There was no response on the other end so I left a voice message informing him that I needed his notes. So I was right, I thought, he is paying back! But after 10 minutes, my doorbell rang, it was him. He apologized that it took him so long to get to my place because the weather was really hot. I felt sorry and ashamed. He gave me the notes and when his mother called asking him to go back home for lunch, he said he could not because I needed his help at that moment. I realized that he had not even eaten yet, I was really sorry for my behavior towards him the previous day. I duly apologized and he told me that as best friends we should not complain but always help each other out. This made me know that he was a good guy and my best friend too.

Now both of us are grown-ups, I am in the USA and he will be going to the UK in the coming year. But distance cannot affect our friendship; we have been friends for 10 years, and we have a lot more in front of us. We know when we need each other because we understand each other like a brother and a sister. It is true that a best friend is someone who stands by you in all circumstances which may be good or bad, and whom you always feel you can share with everything.
