Performance Appraisal Paper

Assignment #4 is intended to help you begin to understand how performance can
effectively be appraised. Imagine that you sit down for your performance review and
your manager tells you that, “You have a poor attitude so I can’t give you much of a
raise this year.” How helpful is this? Do you know what to change so that you can be
evaluated higher the next time?
Make certain that you understand the material in Chapter 10, especially section 10-5
about different scales on an appraisal.
For this assignment, you will be developing a graphic rating scale appraisal for
appraising performance.
I want you to identify five performance dimensions and create a scale that you might
use specifically when evaluating peers with whom you work on a team
project. Here is an example of a performance dimension: “Helps the team work
smoothly by meeting deadlines.” Each of your five scales should have five evaluation
choices, ranging from desired behavior to undesirable behavior. However, you must
choose your OWN adjectives (with explanations of each adjective) and you can vary
what you use for each dimension or you can use the same ones. A purpose of a welldesigned performance appraisal form is to create reliability in evaluations. No matter
who is evaluating an employee on a dimension, an “outstanding” or a “poor” rating
should always mean the same thing. (Both figures 10-8 and 10-9 in your textbook will
be a good resource for you.) Please do NOT use the same adjectives found in figure
10-8 or 10-9. You must come up with your own adjectives and definitions.
Do not underestimate how long this will take – it is harder to do than it appears.
In addition to creating this scale, please discuss in your own words (in at least 2
paragraphs) the advantages and disadvantages of using this type of appraisal (beyond
what is found in the textbook). This section should have a word count of no less than
250 words. Any less than 250 words will result in no points awarded for this section of
the assignment.
