ASSIGNMENT: To write a paper based on an interview with a healthy, non-institutionalized elderly person and a review of current nursing and allied health literature. This assignment is guided by prerequisite reading and class discussion in theory, college lab, and clinical.
OBJECTIVES:
The Student will be able to:
1) Utilize interview techniques with an elderly person of a different ethnic background (than
student).
2) Describe the effects of the aging process on the select individual.
3) Describe how basic human needs (according to Maslow) are or are not being met.
4) Review current literature relevant to the individual’s culture.
5) Discuss how the individual’s culture may/does influence health care beliefs, needs, and
practices.
6) Describe the individual’s developmental level using Erickson’s theory of social growth
and development.
7) Discuss literature related to culture.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
1) Format
- a) 10-12 typewritten pages
- b) American Psychological Association (APA) style
- c) Identity subject through use of initials only
- d) Reference list must include a minimum of 5 references.
Examples of references:
1) Texts in addition to required nursing texts
2) References related to the individual’s culture such as:
- a) recent articles from refereed nursing journals
- b) recent articles from refereed allied discipline journals
- c) chapters from designated books reserved in library
2) Subject Criteria
- a) Healthy, non-institutionalized individual
- b) Over 65 years of age
- c) Of a different ethnicity (than student)
- d) Not a relative
- e) An index card with name, address, and telephone number of a person
interviewed is to be submitted with paper.
3) Due Date: (approximately mid-semester – specific date to be assigned by clinical instructor)
4) Paper must be submitted via tumitin.com on or before due date. Completed Leininger
Acculturation Health Care Assessment Tool (p. 30-32) and completed and signed checklist
and grading form (p. 33-34) must be handed in to instructor by due date.

CONTENT
Part I – Introduction – After reading chapter 19 in TLL, complete the following:
1) Describe the person, including: age, sex, approximate height and weight, marital status, general
physical appearance, mental, and emotional status and employment status.
2) Describe your connection with this individual.
3) Identify the time, place, and circumstances under which the interview took place.
4) Identify the length of the interview.
Part II – General Assessment – After reading chapter 5, 4, 8, & 9 in TLL, complete the
following:
1) Discuss the signs of age-related changes that you observed in this person.
2) Discuss the symptoms of age-related changes that the person stated he/she experienced.
3) Discuss person’s ability to perform activities of daily living
4) Discuss the person’s feelings concerning his/her health and aging
5) Discuss how this person satisfies his/her basic needs through:
- a) work or retirement
- b) hobbies or recreation
- c) kinship
- d) socialization
- e) environment
6) Identify the person’s developmental level using Erikson’s theory of social growth and
development. Provide rationale to support your assessment of the person’s developmental level
PART III – Cultural Assessment – After reading chapters 27, 45 & 30 in TLL, chapter 10 in Dudek
and viewing Leininger film, completer the following:
1) Identify the person’s cultural background including:
- a) race
- b) ethnicity
- c) religion
- d) class
- e) gender role
- f) lifestyle
2) Collect data using “Leininger’s Acculturation Health Care Assessment Tool for Cultural
Patterns in Traditional and Non-Traditional Lifeways.”
3) Collect and discuss data using the questions in Dudek (2013) p. 242 “Understanding
Acculturation”.
4) Collect and discuss data on your client’s health promotion and illness prevention beliefs
and practices including:
Identify most recent date for each as appropriate:
- a) professional exams-general physical, eye dental, gynecological
- b) sun screen protection
- c) exercise
- d) immunizations-flu and pneumococcal vaccine
- e) self-exams (breast, testicular)
- f) smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector
- g) emergency (disaster) preparedness plan
5) Assess your client’s spiritual well-being. Identify if your client has drawn upon spirituality
as a source of strength during times of wellness or illness. Provide examples. Discuss
whether cultural factors attribute to the client’s sense of spirituality.
Part IV – Research
(1) Choose one (1) ethnic group identified as part of this person’s background. Research the health
beliefs, values and practices predominant for this ethnic group. (Research refers to the review
of the professional literature).
(2) Documented discussion
Citing references from the professional literature, discuss each of the following
- a) role and status of elderly within the family
- b) views and practices to prevent illness, promote wellness, maintain health and
care for self and others, including complementary and alternative therapies (CAT)
as mentioned in TLL Chapter 27.
- c) communication patterns appropriate to family members based on age and gender
(verbal and non-verbal).
Part V – Comparative Analysis
Discuss (compare and contrast) the similarities (10%) and differences (10%) in beliefs,
values, and practices of the interviewed person with those cultural values, beliefs, and
