Introduction

Covid 19 has undoubtedly expectedly shaped current day society. From its first appearance in Wuhan as of 2019 to current times since its enabled outbreak on the entire world population. This sudden and unexpected break in society infrastructures although theorized to take place could not in any way have been predicted to be this severe on a worldwide stage and of this magnitude. Although a large number of industries have greatly suffered the largest afflicted by this pandemic would in all essence be the customer service industry. Such industries include telecom, eCommerce, retail, financial, insurance, banking, transportation, logistics, travel, and hospitality, etc. This fall or sudden halt of work in such sectors has led to a large sum of other problems occurring that have greatly created a massive wave of inequality. My aim in this paper is to further understand just how great the pandemic has affected our society and thus try to find a means on how to address said issues to achieve social equality that ensures that society, in general, does not further deteriorate because of the pandemic.

A perfect case example to look at would be the hospitality industry which has experienced an unprecedented challenge due to the covid 19 pandemic (UNWTO, 2020). Although approaches to flatten the curve and reduce the number of people infected by covid was a smart enough idea to help everyone as a whole it has however undoubtedly lead to the closure of most hospitality businesses (Bartik et al., 2020) and thus significantly lead to the laying off of a large number of employees in such sectors. This has in turn lead to people being unable to afford basic needs like paying rent and thus in turn lead to an inequality problem due to a lack of basic income for people to live off. Not all businesses closed down completely as some were allowed to do take-outs for some of their customers while restrictions started to ease up and the economy started to pick up little by little with restaurants being allowed to re-open but with a limited capacity of people inside them who would adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Preliminary findings on the hospitality industry have further given shocking conclusions that even after the pandemic ends it may not entirely mean that the hospitality and customer service industry may recover entirely by seeing a rise in customers (Gursoy et al., 2020). The finding states that a large number approximately 50% of the population may not be comfortable going back to restaurants immediately. This will in turn mean that a lot of the hospitality sector may not in turn fully recover since a large number is dependent on their customers.

Addressing the Inequality

An easier way to address this inequality would be to fix the whole pandemic issue as a whole and thus allow us to return to day-to-day activities but unfortunately, that is easier said than done. Society as a whole has already greatly suffered from this pandemic although fixing the whole pandemic issue would greatly benefit all of us it is, unfortunately, one of many other problems caused by covid that we have to tackle. The general breakdown of most industries has to be addressed and also the all-time high unemployment number in the country due to covid. To solve this issue would greatly benefit the country in the long run but it would require a short time loss especially in terms of financing the said industries. A basic form of income would have to be established for people laid off due to covid as this would allow them to take care of themselves for a time being until the covid issue has been addressed. Another means to also help society as a whole to recover from this pandemic would be a financial support scheme supported by the government to help the various businesses affected by covid stay afloat until they recover fully.

These plans although seem not at all sufficient enough to everybody as a whole they are good enough to help our economy recover from this disaster and in the long run prevent a much large wealth inequality gap that we may not be able to recover from.

Conclusion

The situation is dire but not entirely unrecoverable support of our service sector, unfortunately, is an unavoidable thing. My paper as a whole has examined just how much the service sector is in need and in turn given a conclusive enough reason of how we can further avoid making the situation even worse. Financial support is a must to this sector sooner rather than later.

The pandemic as a whole keeps on exerting a profound impact on our society as a whole and whether or not the current state of the pandemic will continue to be the norm will greatly depend on how we tackle it as a society. All in all, the problem is very clear and the underlying outcome of how a large number of people will greatly be affected remains the same. If the sudden rise of unemployment remains the same then the inequality gap will keep on increasing since a large group of people will not have a sufficient way of getting income. To combat this issue, we need to come up with an efficient way to provide a basic income to a large number of people who have been affected by the pandemic, especially in the customer service industry. By doing this we greatly keep a large number of people from near poverty conditions and further give the society more time to recover and in turn help people meet the basic requirements they need to survive until conditions change again for the better. Although this plan seems potentially quite costly the greater cost we would suffer would be in the long run when we as a society fail to find a sufficient enough workforce or a major fall in most if not all our service industry.

Although governmental support is necessary other forms of financial support should also be considered especially ones in which would be useful and detrimental to people working in the customer service industry.

The pandemic fear; A Comprehensive Network Analysis

The pandemic fear; A Comprehensive Network Analysis.

Recent COVID-19 conceptualizations tend to be limited, emphasizing a one-variable model, such as those based on fear of infection. It should not be overlooked that according to the CDC, everyone reacts differently to stressful circumstances. Network research has shown the interrelation of different aspects of concern, prevention, coping, and other variables. Implications are discussed for the treatment of diseases and anxiety. The CDC urges us to avoid absorbing new pandemic stories so as to care for our well-being, such as daily training, meditating, relaxation and eating healthily. With regularly practicing, sleeping, and avoidance of drugs when facing pressure. In this paper we analyze an online survey, including COVID-19 measurements of concern, avoidance, self-protective behavior, and other variables, that was conducted on a population sample of American and Canadian adults.

It is a difficult time. There is a global pandemic, where many, if not all, places and business premises are shutting down, and others are trying to reopen safely. Many of us still live in fear of places where coronaviruses’ infection rate is spiraling out of control. Others are bracing for the next thing to come. And we all look at the headlines and think, “When will this end? For many people, coronavirus vulnerability is the most challenging problem to deal with. We don’t know how we are affected, how long or how bad things will go on. And that makes it all too easy to spiral and disastrously frighten and panic. But you can control your anxieties and worries, even in the face of a particular crisis(Lee).

By comparison, studies and clinical results from past pandemics and other outbreaks suggest that the ranges of the relevant variables are considerably broader, including prominent conflicting elements such as fear of infection and the conviction that the outbreak’s gravity has been exaggerated (Taylor et al.). The WHO has released recommendations to help the public, health practitioners, and those involved in the outbreak coronavirus. It can be useful if news causing depression or anxiety is not watched, read, or listened to.

In addition, guidance and recommendations for controlling anxiety and stress in the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak have been issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The CDC’s recommendations provide general advice for managing outbreak stress and detailed advice for parents, respondents, and people who are released from quarantine. The CDC’s first rule of thumb is to continue treating patients with pre-existing mental health problems and know new or deteriorating symptoms. Recommendations for the CDC include wellness and health issues, changes in dietary behaviors or sleep patterns, sleep disorders/concentrations and difficulties such as declining chronic states of health and increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.

Long-term isolation may, however, affect mental health. In this special feature, therapists share top tips about what you should do when you stay at home to deal with anxiety and stress. Working from home can seem like a dream set up for some people, as it gives you the ease of a comfortable, familiar atmosphere to tap into this latent creativity. But a new set of problems may also emerge — in particular as a compulsory step. So, how do people overcome these problems and reduce the burden of working solely from home? Next, recognize that stress levels are undoubtedly higher for everyone now — so prioritizing your thoughts early in the day is important when you’re working from your home.

From a cognitive-behavioral health approach to deal with stress and anxiety, pandemics and trauma-related anxieties, a network approach makes a strong theoretical sense as cognitive behavior interventions predict that information is passed network components interact. The cognitive-compliance model shows that negative assumptions (e.g., fears about COVID-19 infection and its origins and effects) contribute to knowledge checks from COVID-19 to make the hazard more predictable and controllable. The fact that testing (for example, tracking health details on the Internet or social media) is invariably an indubitable backfire, causing a person to find unfamiliar, fear-provoking information (for example, graphical pictures or descriptions of ill people on mainstream news or social media). Fake news and conspiracy theories regarding COVID-19 can intensify concerns (Alecu).

There is so much beyond our influence, like how long the pandemic will last, how others respond to the situation, and what will happen in our societies at large. It is hard to understand, and so many of us react, looking for answers and worrying about the numerous scenarios that might occur on the Internet constantly. However, as long as we concentrate on issues with unrecognizable responses and situations beyond our control, this approach will not make us feel exhausted, nervous, and overwhelmed. We can be stuck in fear of what might happen or attempt to concentrate on something you can control. For example, you may not be able to monitor the severity of the coronavirus outbreak in your area. You can still take measures to reduce your risk by regularly (at least 20 seconds) providing soap and water or a manual sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol (Ornell et al.).

Researchers are examining how music therapy can boost health results for a wide range of patients, including premature babies and people suffering from depression or Parkinson’s disease. Music has long been known as an efficient means of emotional care. Still, the idea of songs, sound frequency, and rhythm to treat the physical ailment, says a Ph.D. psychologist from McGill University in Montreal, Daniel J. Levitin. Parkinson’s is a special Parkinson disease program for the population. The curriculum investigates how chanting enhances neurological function and increases spirit and mood. In the ParkinSonics case study, the participant’s focus shifts away from disease and to the imagination. The group’s singing improves vocal intensity and clarity, rhythmic movement, and trust in emotional expression while fostering a sense of community.

Musicians at Stanford’s Stanford Center for Computer Science in Music and Acoustics proposed that rhythmic music may influence brain function and cope with various neurological disorders, including attention deficit disorder and depression. For the one-day symposium “Brainwave Training in External Rhythmy: Interdisciplinary Studies and the Clinical Perspectives,” the diverse community came together to exchange ideas that transcend the limits of our knowledge of human musical experience. Sleep, meditation, and hypnosis have recently led scientists to look at music more closely. There is a small but growing body of scientific proof that music and other rhythmic stimuli can predictably change mental conditions, even treat damaged brains (Saarman).

In correlation analysis, frequent players are compared with those who do not play a video game on a perceptual and cognitive test. The standard result is that non-gamers outweigh non-gamers on every assessment test. This does not prove that gaming is an important factor in enhanced results since people who opt to play video games will already be those with superior perceptive and cognitive skills. The strongest evidence that games strengthen these abilities comes from studies in which all participants are, first of all, non-gamers. Some, but not others, are requested for a certain amount of hours a day for the sake of the experiment playing a single video game. The standard finding in these studies is that people who play the game develop simple perceptive or cognitive ability tests, while people in the control group do not(Gray).

From a layman’s perspective, playing video games specifically influences and affects the brain regions responsible for memory, spatial perception, knowledge organizations and fine motor skills. The study also supports the argument that like exercise, playing games for as little as 30 minutes a day will make your life easier. Action video gaming has been shown to boost performance on locating a target stimulus quickly—in a test that is a strong driving capability indicator. It also enhances the ability to track moving objects in the distractor region. Action games enhanced children and adults’ ability to monitor a series of visually similar moving objects similar to other moving objects in the visual field—reduced impulsivity.

Conclusion

According to the CDC, it is important to remember that everybody responds to stressful situations differently. Children may strongly address the burden of the situation, older people, or people with chronic disease, outbursting relief workers, such as physicians, other medical practitioners, first responders, and others with mental illness or drug addiction issues. The CDC recommendations include concerns for your health and relatives’ health, a shift in eating habits or sleep patterns, difficulties in sleeping and concentration, worsening chronic health conditions, and increased alcohol, tobacco, or other substance use. The CDC advises us to stop consuming new pandemic stories and care just for well-being. Like exercising regularly, takes deep breaths, stretching and meditating, eating healthily, cooking well-balanced meals, and frequently exercising, sleeping, and preventing medicines while coping with stress.

History

Reasons why the 1950’s and the 1960’s civil rights movements were successful, as compared to the failed efforts of earlier Civil Rights. Also, how the approach of direct action of a non –violent nature became successful after the Second World War.

Racial barriers were eliminated following events that were related to movements of Civil Rights in the United States. In the year 1954, the decision regarding the Brown v. Board of Education was a notable achievement. In the year 1965, the Voting Rights Act ensured that Americans would all have equal rights. Furthermore, it ensured that changes would take place in the sectors that were, political, cultural, as well as social. This means that black people who were earlier discriminated against would enjoy rights like other citizens. The rights of citizens were regulated by the existing government. It means that skin color would no longer be a hindrance towards achieving equal rights. When the word civil rights is mentioned many people think about Martin Luther King Jr. According to King, in ‘Why We Can’t Wait’, the need for blacks to become emancipated was extremely needed. The various inhumane acts performed on black people made King make his voice heard. Some of the incidents highlighted by King include; Young school girls who were black, and were killed by a bomb, while attending Sunday school. There are many other incidents that lead to the civil rights movement and the need for blacks to become activists.

In the 1950’s, the public gained knowledge about civil rights after two issues were highlighted. A victory of a legal nature was won by the NAACP in the year 1954, and it got rid of segregation foundations in the country. Moreover, public schools were no longer to engage in acts of segregation, after a ruling made by the Supreme Court. The latter was termed as being unconstitutional because it violated the rights of African Americans. Americans were meant to obtain education in terms of equality, though it would be obtained separately. The events that followed later were chaotic, as racism and poverty still existed in the American urban slums. President Kennedy tried to calm the tensions that existed in his country by enforcing laws that discouraged it. He ensured that Americans would have their civil rights maintained by federal protection, as well as having segregation banned.

The rise of nationalism among the black people is another reason why the civil rights movements flourished during this time. According to Bell Hook in the book ‘Ain’t I A Woman’, blacks were becoming informed about their rights, and they had to fight in order to achieve it. On the other hand, King advocated for an approach of action that was direct as well as non violent. Unfortunately, this did not go down well with revolutionaries particularly in the North. Religious leaders, college students and bold African Americans were instrumental in their fight for equal achievement. The approaches they used were non violent as they sort to engage in legal challenges tactics. Other similar approaches used by the African Americans include freedom rides, marches and even sit ins. These initiatives lead to African Americans attaining protection and equal opportunity in their country. Social change had to be attained at any cost, mostly through means that were non violent. The latter was in a bid to fight against racial inequality in the country. Peaceful challenges were embraced in order to ensure that racist institutions changed, and there would not be any attacks, which were bloody. Segregation became nullified after the high court passed a ruling on the Plessy v. Ferguson case. It meant that whites who engaged in racist acts faced being prosecuted. The other incident, which took place, involved Rosa Parks in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This is referred to as the best example of the civil rights movement, whereby it gained momentum towards achieving equal opportunities. The boycotters were persistent in their efforts until the courts realized that blacks were gaining power. In turn, the Jim Crow was banned, and more progress was to take place. The whites now knew that blacks were determined as well as united, in order to bring about effective change.

Finally, policy makers in the government were known to be slow moving, as they were offered choices by organizations led by African Americans. The latter is a reason for the success of civil rights movements due to the approach they chose to use. Some of the legendary black activists who will forever be known for their contribution to the movement of civil rights were Malcolm X and Martin King. They advocated for what is known as power among black people. Malcolm X was known for various street rages while, on the other hand, King was a pacifist. People who represented change that is peaceful were chosen as leaders by the country’s policy makers. Mahatma Gandhi and Henry Thoreau were the two principle influences that made King adopt a non violent approach. This is the reason why civil rights movements of the 1950’s, as well as that of the 1960’s were successful.

The meaning of racism according to Bell Hooks in accordance to specific events, which took place during the Civil Rights Movement. Also, the reason why racism is described as being institutional and not being dependent among individuals.

In the year 1981, Bell Hook published the book ‘Ain’t I A Woman’ that focuses on feminism and black women. She explains how black women were affected by racism during the civil rights movement. It is during slavery that racism and sexism converged, and during this time, black women suffered immensely. They were subjected to unfavorably conditions as well as being accorded low status in the American society. Federick Douglass a known abolitionist among the black people was popular among suffragists and abolitionists who were white. On the other hand, immorality and promiscuity were the stereotypes that existed among black people. The latter is according to segregationists who came from the southern community. Black women were not spared from harassment when they spoke as white reformers were quick to attack them. This is a reason why Bell Hooks claims that racism was not directed upon individuals but on institutions. The latter in this case refers to women in the black community. After the Rosa Parks Incident, women become aware that they had a purpose in society. They had to stand up in order to have control over their lives.

Bell argues that it was during slavery that the stereotypes affecting women were established. In fact, even up to date this stereotyping still exists in some parts of the world. On the other hand, the white women were stereotyped as being virgin goddesses, and this is due to effects of slavery. In turn, black women were viewed as whores who were seductive and this put a large burden upon their lives. Furthermore, this is why during the civil rights movement many black women were raped, and their feminity devalued. The black women were even discriminated at the work place and often were left to work in jobs not suitable for human beings. This shows that women who were white were demonstrating behavior that was emasculating. Moreover, Bell believes that the movements that took place during the period of Black Nationalism were discriminatory. She claimed that they were misogynists as well as patriarchal, as they sort to increase their strength. Also, these movements were trying to ensure that racial divisions in society were overcome. This is what is known as black matriarch emasculating that latched upon the various black leaders. Bell criticizes such theories, which were common with a man known as Daniel Moynihan Patrick.

According to Bell, feminist movements were involved the upper and middle class of the American society. This means that white women who belonged to lower classes were not spared from being discriminated against. In turn, classism, racism and sexism were reinforced during the period of the civil rights movements. She points out that this is why many women did not participate in the 1970’s feminist moments. Changes were mostly needed by black women as compared to white women. The latter advocated for their rights in secret and were not as vocal as black women. The matter concerning race became rhetoric due to its, extreme volatile nature. Manhood was often viewed as the symbol of freedom and thus the reason why black masculinity was popular. These notions lead to women’s and men’s liberty, as well as integrity being undermined. The sexuality of black women had to be controlled according to black men who were involved in the civil rights movement.

The word in institutional racism was introduced by Kwame Ture, and this is during the period of the 1960’s. The need to ensure that personal bias was distinguished from race made him introduce the term. Together with King, they were not pleased with white moderates in their society. The lather thought that personal transformation among the white people was the reason for their being a civil rights movement. There were various places whereby institutional racism was witnessed. They include; power halls, ghetto streets as well as voting booths. The result is that racial discrimination in America was real, pervasive as well as destructive. For example, the white ensured that schools attended by black children would not obtain funding from the government. This means that the agenda of institutional racism was being advanced by such agendas, which had a negative impact. For example, most attacks on black people were aimed at churches. This is because the black people were deeply involved in matters related to church. The white people took advantage and attacked leaders of the black churches. This is the reason why King was arrested during the Birmingham incident. Furthermore, more attacks were done upon people who were attending church services. An example is the young girls who lost their lives while in church after being bombed.
